Just realised that a girl I was friends with while I lived in the UK was one of these kids. She was also one of the loveliest, kindest people I've had the priviledge of knowing -I met her while we were both volunteers at a homelessness charity, she'd just finished her masters in education at the University of Edinburgh.

+Caitlin Sinclair I knew a student from China who was a cleaner in our company (London). She had two jobs whilst studying and she too was a wonderful person. I always presumed that she was from a poor family but I only just found out that her family was quite rich. Not the spoilt brat as many are portrayed.

+Manzur 007 a poor family most certainly can not afford to send their kids to The UK. So yeah almost all international students come from quite wealthy families and the rest is from scholarship. The International students pay the whole tuition fees by themselves.
@MichaelMisoi
@MichaelMisoi 9 жыл бұрын
+Bernard Liem True that. All International students in the UK are either from wealthy or on scholarship. Most of whom are the former because it is really difficult to get a full scholarship in the UK. I know lots of people who have studied in the US around me but only a handful in the UK

Yes, I was really surprised. She told a colleague that her family had money, but never myself. But when she says that her family has money it's all relative. She certainly didn't give me the impression that she was from a rich family, considering the amount of time she had to spend working, maybe they were fairly comfortable so in her eyes she might have classed herself as rich, but not rich enough for her to live off her parents.

Why is this made into a Chinese thing... rich parents of all ethnicities 'ship' their children off to prestigious boarding schools/train them with all kinds of lessons from a young age
@Blakezilla594
@Blakezilla594 7 жыл бұрын
Omair K seattle too. I drive around neiborhoods (all with $1million+ houses) sometimes and see a overwhelming majority of Asian ethnicities walking on the side walks, tending to gardens, driving, etc. It's not a bad thing, however, it is when in excess. Why not improve your own country. More people here in the U.S does mean more circulation of money and improves the economy, but it does significantly rise property prices and pushes away the 'native' population.

Man if you were poor and became successful, you would want the best for your kids? or no? This is just the textbook way of becoming successful. So getting good grades and going to a good university or no? Why is it being ashamed on? I know it's immense pressure but it's just wanting the best for your kids. Inheriting money is good but if you are not educated money blows as fast as the wind.

Sadly, there's a grain of truth to the double-edged stereotype that is "educational prestige." When you're Asian, you're likely influenced by this mindset (to some degree). Educational prestige especially matters in developing countries because education is viewed as a “key” to socio-economic mobility. In many developed (Western) countries, it doesn’t really matter as long as alternatives exist. Keep in mind that they’re “different” forms of privilege.

As an Asian myself, I don't understand how some of these kids get into certain universities without their parents smothering money all over the place. I once asked some chinese students a simple question and not one of them could speak English... in a class where you need to write essays in English. What is life.

Seriously let down by GQ. While true, a lot of wealthy families are under the impression that receiving education from western countries is better for the future of the kids. The video editing technique employed in every single one of GQ's videos on China purposely highlights the ignorance and stupidity of the Chinese people with phrases like the "golf is originated from America right?" mind you that's a 15 year old kid speaking, but somehow this GQ made it possible for her to represent China. There are real genuine people looking to contribute to the society in China, GQ viewers just never got the chance to see them, all they see is the rich kids going to little ivy leagues and rich women-to-be eating bananas with a knife and a fork. Foreigners please don't blindly believe in this ridiculously one sided image portrayed by GQ, realise that this is merely a propaganda for your entertainment.

My old boss was like you, holia: Chinese guy who went as a foreign exchange student when he was in high school. First he went to one family and he hated it and could only stay there a year. Then he went to another family and he said the mom there treated him nice, always cooked. The dude then went to college in America before going back and being a successful businessman in China. (He had family connections and I think that was the source of his success: more power to him since everyone gets help someway.) Funny thing: he told me that a lot of Chinese guys would hang out at the student center for Chinese people and wait for a call to pick up new Chinese girls coming to America for the first time. The guys, having already been in America for a year or so, would then befriend the Chinese girls and they would become their girlfriends so they had someone to feel safe with, LOL!

My mom made me do all this shit you name it all, piano lessons, art school, private school, aspire to attend Cambridge university, basketball, speaking English all the time and it did not make me happy. Western culture is very incompatible with Asian culture , sending these kids to boarding school I guarantee you they will not fit in and will be bullied 24/7 and stick together with Chinese friends. Western education especially american education is severely behind Asian counties in PISA tests and do poorly at math and science something that is high priority in Asian education. My English high school was quite possibly the worst education I've ever had, students don't obey and respect their teachers, math is so easy , in 4th year high-school we were still learning division lol. English lessons are horrible, they don't teach you spelling and grammar, the teacher just reads you a book or make you watch a movie. Science is just playtime. My classmates were 99% white and I assumed they were well behaved, how wrong I was. At least twice a month we get a visit from the local police station. And oh did I mention English weather is absolutely appalling especially Cambridge university you would think a university as prestigious as this would have modern heating and infrastructure oh boy how wrong I was again. Dont get me started with London, quite possibly the most over-rated global city in the world. Expensive, terrible food, abysmal transport system and the most god-awful people you will ever meet in your life. Children should not be paraded as social status toys and their happiness must be top priority not education and material wealth.

Idrankyourcoffeewhileyouwerereadingmyusername Definitely true. I'm Asian, and my parents are just like yours, they make me learn many things, including piano, basketball, martial arts, Chinese, English, and I had art classes. They also never let me have any electronics, like phones or computers (But they would let me use their electronic devices if I needed it for educational purposes). They forced me to go to a charter school where everything was supposed to me more complicated, even though it wasn't. Math is extremely easy, what I'm learning in 7th grade right now is basically a review of everything that I've learned in 4th grade math. It's so boring in class that I ended up using khan academy to help me learn something. Also, every other class is very easy as well. In science, we're reviewing everything we've learned before, but just a little more in depth. In English, we literally just read books and write a paragraph or two about the book. In history, we're actually learning a lot, and using up a lot of time. Also, in Technology class, its just free time building things, playing games on the computers, 3D modeling, and a little bit of coding. Technology class is still really easy for me, because I've already learned everything in my free time at home. I think it would definitely be better to go to school in China, than to go to school in the Americas. I feel that the main problem of this downgrade in education is the development of technology and games. Many Americans (And of course, Asian Americans, African Americans, etc...) tend to spend more time on these games than they do in education. Not only do they spend a lot of time in gaming, they also disrespect others and teachers by being racist, thinking that they're very cool and people would like them. This is causing the human generations to become worse and worse.

Rainbow Barf I used to think the same way you do, but trust me, while middle school is a joke, American high school can become pretty competitive. Taking 10+ AP's, participating in a varsity sport, advance orchestra, prepping for 2200+ SAT scores & 3 subject SATs with at least 760+, 2nd level ACS&AMC 12, volunteering (300 hrs+), clubs (need exec position), science fair competitions (Intel ISEF), all the while maintaining a 4.0 GPA can be pretty overwhelming. I did all of that in high school and got into a top 20 university, but looking back I hated that portion of my life. I think I averaged 4 hours of sleep everyday during my junior year of high school. Enjoy what you have now and make the most out of it.

I was one of these kids, prepare for huge disappointment when your kid is rejected from Harvard after you spent like a million dollars; this is the most twisted logic ever, just take that money you made being a business person and re-invest it, maybe buy the little brats their own storefront; stop looking for excuses to have other people educate your kids cause you are too busy working; the same branding techniques you used in business does not apply to a living breathing human being, your shallow choices will come full circle and bite you in the ass.

basically if you are rich, you go abroad get a degree, come back to China and then apply for a job as a CEO or something similar. simple as that! if you aren't rich then you study in china, your cv isnt great compared to these kids and struggle at a low level government job.

+Jk Prat Um no, most good Chinese colleges are a lot harder to get into(sometimes more expensive) and you only get one chance to get into it. Whereas in overseas, even good colleges are way easier to get into plus they offer more subjects than the ones in China. Also Chinese colleges have a lot of propaganda in them so some rich parents would rather let their children go into a school overseas.

Chinese Should look up the term "nouveau rich"…old money acts different, still send their children to the best schools but they don't act like they've never seen money. Obama administration devised a way to fix the issues higher ed institutions were facing as a result of the financial crisis by increasing student visas so that the newly relocated wealth in asia could send their kids paying 3 times the regular US citizen tuition. This formula compensated for low income americans who could not afford to pay for college .So for every three US citizens that couldn't enroll one chinese student was accepted. Otherwise higher ed institutions would've failed just like the banks.

It gets just as ridiculous everywhere in the world. I met many chinese university students and a few laoshi's when I went to school in Miami, many of whom where attending UM, which is considered an Ivy league school, but it was in Oregon where I really saw the bigger displays of wealth such as driving exotic cars to school, mind you the town I was in was a few square miles.

Thanks to events in 1949, China's "aristocracy" practically became non-existent; hence so-called "acceptable and controlled ways" to flaunt one's wealth went right out the window along with that aristocracy. China is experiencing what Russia went through during the "oligarch era" of the 1990s - early 2000s, or what the United States went through during the "Gilded Age" of the late 1800s. So one can't automatically expect "nouveau riche" Chinese to immediately ape "old money" as an example, especially in this age where the "Western World" Kardashians (and others of their ilk) are hardly providing examples of humility and dignity (and are excitedly splashed all over the various gossipy rags).

They send their kids here and they flaunt their money. For example, there are several Chinese exchange students at my school, one which has a Lamborghini Gallardo, Mclaren 650S, and a brand new Range Rover for the winter. Thats almost a million dollars in cars. He wears clothing worth thousands too. are they really here to learn? or are they here to show their wealth?

The funny thing is the trend is already shifting off America to other countries like Canada or other European countries. Being in America wasnt as cool as it was ten years ago. Chinese people are becoming disillusioned about America and going abroad in general. The old mentality was to emigrate permanently because out of china was better. Nowadays the "respectable" thought is to go outside the country, learn and see things, and bring it back to the country. In a lot of places now, saying you studied abroad in canada/eu can garner more respect than saying you studied in america.
