I think I have commented somewhere else. Milembe and other Sukuma stars are good at blending in Sukuma with foreign languages where Sukuma lacks; and it comes out beautiful. Thanks again Milembe for your talent.

People like me who speaks Sukuma, will notice that Sukuma language has accents depending where you're in Sukuma area. Here Sengi Milembe is telling us "akasoka". While a woman from Kwimba will say "akashoka." My cousin used to driven nuts by his Mwanza wife who had an accent like Sengi Milembe. Other words which come out strange in Malampaka all the way to Nzega are those with "ji" and "shi". A word for example "shikome" in Ngudu will come out as "jikome" in Malampaka and Nzega. I found it fun listening to variety of Sukuma accent.

This is a typical Sukuma song and dance, and the lyrics are also Sukuma. The best part is that Sengi does not have a break for she sings or says what she wants; I believe this out of dry run for the song covers quite a few events including passing greetings to her kids and asking about fish availability at boat landings. Spoken or sang in Sukuma the whole thing comes hilarious or comical. I am surprised commenters take the lyrics serious. Also note the language she uses for the nurse is not available in English; but in French and of course in Sukuma and Swahili. English does not have diminutive verbs or adjectives.

Sengi performance in this video was not rehearsed; but it came naturally as it sounds. Just imagine she is citing her child with strange name “Mabundu”; and asking others if fish is available at boat landing. No song or video rehearsed would dare put stuff like that in a song. This is just hilarious and shows that she was in control of what was going on during recording.

Did Sengi really know was being recorded when asking availability of fish where her kids were? She better knows the whole world now is listening that. It comes out funny for where I live now fish and everything else is readily available in grocery stores. I know fish here does not taste as delicious as fish in Mwanza. But I know sometimes hear people whine when fish and other items prices increase. But usually all kinds of food items are available. But I understand what she was asking, for I lived in Mwanza, Maswa and Shinyanga. Sometimes we could not find fish readily. But I see Sukumas now are enjoying plentiful of food items. You can tell how vibrant young men and women are. Old women and males look healthier than when I was in Mwanza. But people listening to Sengi should know she is a star and therefore anything can come out as she wishes. It is very entertaining to hear such observations as Sengi’s.

I can't efficiently comment in Sukuma or Swahili because for 40 years now my main form of communication has been English and a little in Swahili. Actually, I got an “A” in Swahili - Cambridge school certificate. I can accurately translate Swahili into English. I have done so with “Wimbo Maalum Kifo cha Masogange” where listeners wondered what her lyrics meant. At least I sometimes meet people here who speak Swahili of Dar-es-Salaam - but hardly Sukuma. I know I can write Sukuma and Swahili by carefully remembering proper words. But I am reading blogs in Sukuma and notice spellings have changed; and I do not know why. For example, the word “Bhuhabi” was before spelt “Buhabi”. Why did you guys add the “h” for? Remember, I still have my Sukuma accent when speaking English or Swahili. Listen to Nyanda Masangwa or Mama Ushauri - that is my accent. Sengi Milembe is Banang’weli Sukuma accent whereas Subhi Funuki and Soji have Eastern Sukuma accent. They drive me nuts. Did I tell you why I write in English now? We old farts raised in 50s were forced to learn English after 4th grade. In fact, after 1st semester in middle school, we were prohibited speaking Sukuma or Swahili. Our teachers did not speak Sukuma at all. It was funny listening kids speak English without verb tenses. But we managed speaking broken English - to avoid being “slashed” if caught speaking Sukuma or Swahili. Got it now!

Sukuma people from Kwimba and Shinyanga should not be offended by Sengi Milembe accent. It is a Mwanza accent. In America there are also different accents and sometimes completely different from British accent. I was at convenience store and two girls from Wisconsin Spring Green came to shop there. A woman from born and raised in England also came in and started ordering stuff. But the two girls from Spring Green could not understand what she was saying. When she left, one said: "That woman has terrible speech impediment. We could not understand what she was saying." I told them "it is English". The second girl then said: "That is a terrible disease." They thought English is speech impediment or a disease of the mouth for they could not understand the British woman.

Here is a translation of this song: “What is wrong with women these days?-repeated several times .This young man had accident and a nurse committed to take care of him. So., she brought him food off and on. Intent-marry this man-he is well off. But sometime this nurse would even forget bringing medicine to him - when coming to see him. Eventually the guy got out of hospital. Then he thought about the kind nurse. So, he invited her to his house. Several days while living together the nurse would come home drunk. The guy kicked her out. While away, she thought how to get back to him. She called him she was pregnant and several months later came back with his child. The guy was excited to have child. Actually, the child was loaned -she could not become pregnant-she had hysterectomy. Anyway, several days later the kid parents came to get their loaned out baby. But the nurse insisted she was pregnant anyway with his baby this time-a lie for she could not be pregnant-she had removed her uterus. Now several months into fake pregnancy; she claimed had miscarriage-and boy’s parents came to bury the still born. Actually, she stole a still-born child from the hospital. As a whole the guy lost the battle-he could not get rid of her from his house. So Sengi is warning young men: “be careful with women these days.” It is really informative but also comical as presented in Sukuma.

You're right. Her Sukuma accent is that of Mwanza or Geita. Listen when she pronounces "kushoka" she says "kusoka." We have similar accents in US. The worst accents are those of Mississippi, NS, SC and Alabama and Lubbock Texas. Their accents drives me nuts. Sengi is talented to blend in Sukuma, Swahili and English and comes out beautifully.
