I feel that on Ieyasu he nvr wanted to fight mitsunari even much closer he questions to still fight him but with yoshiaki's cutscene he accepts it then but he doesn't do it for just victory he does it cus he knows hell unify the country without killing mitsunari but sadly as yoshiaki brought to his attention that he has to kill him in order to win the fight

In either version they die but both cry at their deaths mitsunari for feeling hollow and Ieyasu for killing his friend which he did not want to do at all I really feel sad for him since he nvr wanted to kill anyone at all he just fought for a righteous cause for peace but in the cause and effect he fought all of his friends
