a good topic to cover is seniors falling out of walker seats/wheelchairs (when the brake system gets too complicated/or forgets to apply it/or when the wheels are so worn out that the brakes are no longer useful).. the chair goes one way and the senior ends up falling to the floor the other way

What a great idea! Thanks so much for this! I bought a bedrail for my elderly mom (who accidentally rolled out of bed once so we wanted to keep her safe while asleep) but it ended up not being a good solution because when she's in bed and wanting to get out, it was impossible for her to lower the rail herself from inside of the bed! She would need someone to lower the rail from the outside... so it was not right for her, but this is perfect!

I have fallen out of bed a number of times. I am very active while asleep. Finally had to get a bed rail. Inherited this from my Dad. He was a very active sleeper too.

I hope the bed rail is helping so you don't get hurt! :)

@@SeniorSafetyAdvice Have not broken any bones yet. Got some nice bruises though. Since we installed the bed rail, no more falls. 😀

My father has fallen a couple times by sitting on the edge of the bed and then sliding off to the floor. Do you think the pool noodles would help make the edge of the bed more firm so he doesn’t slide off?
@SeniorSafetyAdvice4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. The pool noodles may make it more difficult for him to slide off the bed but only if the noodles are secured to the mattress, i think. Otherwise, it seems like as he pushes up against the pool noodle it would move along with him. I'm not sure, but I wonder if it would be better to lower his bed a bit so than when he does put his legs over the bed he can put his feet flat on the ground. As long as he does not have any other issues with balance and standing, a lowered bed may help. But if the issue IS his standing and / or balance then it may be best for him to have bed rails or some type of grab bars by his bed. I hope this information helped. We have an entire article on the topic of falling out of bed - if you would like more information... seniorsafetyadvice.com/how-to-keep-elderly-from-falling-out-of-bed/

Do they have problem getting OUT of bed when they have to get out by themselves?
@SeniorSafetyAdvice2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. Someone MIGHT have a problem if the pool noodles are too large, if they don't have enough strength to roll over the pool noodle, if they have poor balance and/or coordination. A bed rail may help them to get over the pool noodle if they have the coordination and strength to pull themselves up. This is not a solution for everyone of course.
