Holy moly! This is the exact reason I sent the HD800 S back since I didn't feel that much difference between the two except the S version being ever so slightly warmer. Like I said before, The only other thing I noticed was that the imaging was more precise on the original 800. I had to go back and forth 5 times to confirm it. So no way in bloody hell they are worth $600 more.

I didn't spend a ton of time on the soundstage so that's pretty interesting, but at first impression it seemed very similar. I think the 800S being worth it is now common knowledge so I wanted to make sure I stressed that

Fantastic impressions as always, especially about the alleged bass distortion. Concerning the K1000: There is a reason that design hasn't caught on. In normal headphones, the earpads serve to reduce resonances that occur between the driver and the head. Since the K1000 doesn't have earpads, they employed a notch filter to counteract the resonance, but the swiveling option means that the resonance changes a lot depending on how you wear them. It's inherently a flawed design and also suffers from comfort issues.

Hey Metal 571 great review as always; I own the HD800 and to me the sound is spectacular albeit the treble can be pretty spiked; doesn’t hurt my ears but it’s definitely bright! Soundstage is superb the best I’ve heard on any dynamic headphone at least, can’t compare to electrostatic as I haven’t heard any electrostatics yet! The bass on the 800 will depend on the sound source and I’ve plugged mine into sine high end amps and the bass is pretty powerful! Haven’t hear the 800s but it the differences are subtle so I agree why spend on something that’s a small difference in sound, I’ll keep my original 800s!

Thank you very much for your review!!! My experiences are a little bit different in case of the bass. For me, the HD 800 S bass sounds slower and not as detailed as on the HD 800. The HD 800 has definitely more precised bass with listenable more kick for me. It sound harder, I would say. An other thing is the imaging. I think the imaging on the HD 800 S sounds more realistic and not as unrealistic big as on the HD 800. But with all other, I am with you =)

So happy you did this review :) great 👍🏼👍🏼I have both! Overall I prefer the HD800! They sound more epic, ethereal wide and elegant. The HD800S sounds a bit more forced. However with vocals and the right amp the HD800S are gorgeous because it gives a little more velvety warmth - but I find the HD800 cleaner. I ended up getting both 2nd hand in order to have both at 1 price and have double my experiences. I agree that if you already have HD800 get something else :) I agree the soundstage of both are exquisite

Completely agree. The choice between these two is actually more difficult to make than between HD600 and HD650 back then, but is a similar dilemma with the newer model attempting to sound more "pleasing" while the original maybe more "spectacular" LOL.

@poptart7747
@poptart7747 5 жыл бұрын
@@bigyeetus2866 They're comfy, though they did take a bit of getting used to. The ear cups are enormous for a start - they sit more on your face than just around your ears, but you do get used to it, and if you hate headphones touching your ears then these are your best bet. The clamp is much lighter than say the HD650, and to begin with I was afraid I'd accidentally toss them off my head if I moved, however... 1) I keep them in the box whenever I'm not wearing them which might help them keep their shape, and 2) I actually swapped out the headband pad for the one from the HD650 (just by ordering a spare). The default one has too shallow a curve to really grab the top of my head, and I found the stand notch in the middle quite uncomfortable. You can take the default one off - it just unclips (you can find YT vids of people doing this). I then put an angled staple through each end of the 650 pad and threaded a cable tie through each. I then attached the pad to the headband using the ties and voila! Snug, grippy, adjustable, and very comfy (and it's not a destructive mod so you can just reattach the default pad if you ever need to).

The only difference I noticed when I demoed both of them was the 800 being slightly wider but with also better imaging than the 800s, the 800s being slightly smoother and a bit more detailed in the treble. Nice to see these quick comparisons though! Helps out a lot to read / hear about what others have compared, like recently when I asked if the K612 was an upgrade to my AD700 (answer, apparently they trade blows and are in the same league).
@metal571

@@metal571 I do agree that the K612s seem more accurate, though apparently that's at the cost of some imaging (having a similar lack of a focal center image as the k702). I love the imaging and soundstage (especially forward depth) combo of the AD700, I personally can sacrifice some subbass extension for that.

If you want to know the difference in soundstage, you have to go back and forth between the two. It's apparent even in Zeos' sound demos of the two. HD800 : You can hear the object/instrument producing the sound with room reverb around it.. which would give the listener a realistic imaging. HD800S: Too much dampening makes sounds appear from nowhere.. as if there's a void between instruments! Like you're hovering in space.

Hi metal, I want to upgrade from my ath m50x and if you or anyone could help it would be great. I have no external amp/dac though I want to buy one, didn't search a lot but main options are nfb-11 or r2r-11 (no schiit since I'm from Europe). Main ones are he400s(240€), hd600 (290€), dt 1990 pro(465€) and sundara(540€), but more suggestions are welcome. You say he400s are worse than hd600, Tyll from InnerFidelity says the opposite, some prefer the hd650 over the hd600, and the list of things that make picking a headphone difficult goes on. I don't want to go to 1990 pro and sundara price range but if it's really worth it I will think about it. Thanks

Hey, Metal571, can you help me? Please? I want a open back can, that's warm, with very body sounding. I Found your review about 599, but i have my doubts... This headphones can get a open sound and warm? Or is like that Sony closed-back headphones MDR? ''Have bass'' but was a strange ''punchy'' bass without warm body sounding, and very crispy, not relaxing... Almost oppressive, because you want freedom hearing things, but same when the soundstage was nice, the imaging and the sound was claustrophobic. @@metal571 No, no haha XD. Thanks for responding me. It's because i had a Sony MDR-1R, and i know a little the signature of Sony. I'ts REAALY not for me. Love too much progressive rock, jazz fusion, some IDM and i couldn't listen on my old can. Was superficial and ''thin'', when everyone was calling ''clear sounding'' to me was precise and painful. I cannot say exactly what is ''boomy'' and warm (bommy is a specific frequencies that sounds too loud in the summing? not about being just nice bass in low sheets frequencies that veiled others frequencies?), but i think you can understand my doubt. And you said 599 was boomy, but it's not warm as HD 58x? o.Õ Buddy, i have not much money and i need to be a little precise in this buy, so, the HD 58X is that warm and nice sounding? I was gonna get the akg 550 for mixing (need a closed back and this seemed to be the best bang for buck under 200) however I just found out about the 553 mk2 (550mk3) with a detached cable. I was told that they sound the exact same as the 553. Therfore sounding the same as the 550. But I also heard that it has more bass than the 550 (though someone said that's just how they sound before burn in, same as the 550) so I was wondering what your take is. Should I bite the bullet and risk the less flat headphones for the cable or play it safe by getting the older 550?

Burn in is bs first of all. Second of all the original 550, especially early run units, were terrible. They finally finalized the sound towards the end of the run of the original AFAIK as an owner of one of the later 550s. Now I have a 553 Pro and I hears the 553 mk2 in a store. I think the HD 800 might be my end game due to it's amazing sound stage. Although I heard the HD 800 paint thing does fall apart or chips I heard from reddit. The midrange I heard from your review is slightly recessed although I think that might be okay for me. Maybe the treble might not be an issue for me coming from DT 990 and having no issue with them? I'll have to travel like 2 hours just to try them unfortunately when I am ready to buy higher end headphones. :/
@metal571
@metal571 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah treble is a lot less painful than the 990 because the main treble peak is lower in frequency. Mids are recessed around 1.5-2k but easily correctable with EQ, which is something I'd actually recommend adjusting since they're a bit off-timbre and dry as-is, even if you don't mind the treble and don't want to mess with that.

But the new cheaply stamped on brown inked serial number was so laughable, not like the engraved print of old hd800, hd800s. Looks very Chinese knockoff. Also no more cloth linings in the box. This just adds to the problems we already know about: fragile silver mesh cone, difficult to remove connectors, paint chipping off, overpriced ear pad replacements that you will eventually need. Still, I don't know of many bright headphones like the hd800 that aren't stax which have their own issues. So if this is a sound signature you want, you may be stuck with the hd800s. I just wish I knew the above info before I placed the order for mine, but at least I got a refund.

@@liyuki2553 I've heard of all of those. Some people say the HD 600 connections is hard to remove from the headphones too. I have seen the earpad replacements to be like... $75 on their website but I've seen other listings to earpads selling on $20-40 range but I have no idea how close to oem, or if they are OEM pads. I wonder if you could paint the HD 800 like zeos did with his HD 600 if that would help? I dunno x_x at least you got a refund.

He (the metal) said me 58X. I wanted something with a full sounding headphone, and everything goes wrong on the buy, now, i'll wait more time until i can do the purchase. In this time, people recommend me the HE4XX for clarity and soundstage, because i said too that i hated closed-backs, and people said to me the HE4XX has a opener sound, better build, better feeling non-plastic. I am trying to talk with everyone i can, so... some guys said to me totally different things at the same time. Some said the 4xx has NO bass, other says has more than 6xx (whom have more or less equal the 58x). Some say it's more relaxing sound than the aggressive of Senns, others says it's dull. Some says need absolutely a amp. Others says don't change anything. I am just a confused guy writing observations about the discussions.

@@lostremnant Yeah, i was trying to show the confusing image to you. 1 week suffering here. At my first advice, i thought i know it all, but i just start to read more than 100 pages of Reedit, a lot of YT videos to choose the best. I know 99,999% will recommend to you the HD58X under 200. A mount of people i talked said was more fun than the 6** line and the detail was near to placebo imaginary thing. Some grain on trebles of 58x, but the overall sounding have more low bass than all and the mids are incredible. It's a very open, but close sounding headphone. And the thing: they don't need an amp. I hate to say, but i already had the MDR-1R. Everyone was praising them (299 euro in that period), but the sound was thin, the closed back was atrocious to the soundstage (that was good very artificially). So, i have experimented others closed-back. Just don't buy that if you like any open or clear sounding. You need to tell what type of sounding you want and what type of music you listen to. Maybe the Senns cans can be a little ''flat'' too much to electronic music, or veiled

I can get the HD800 for 750€ , which I think is a great price, yet it's still a lot for my budget (think I could survive though ^^), & I don't have the proper environment, i.e. Balanced Amp + DAC (I only rock a DF Red) + high end files (I mainly use Spotify)... Can't say whether it's enough of an opportunity, to jump on it... :/

I have a 1000 budget approx, I plan to buy: - DAC : Khadas Sound Board (most likely)/ Schitt Modi 3 / SMSL SU-8 / EL DAC / Gheshalli Lab - Amp: JDS Lab Atom / AAA THX 789 (later, too $$$ for now) So aside of that, I'm wondering whether this is adequate, especially the Atom, which is not balanced (I read the 800 runs better balanced)..

I have the HD 800, which I bought 7 years ago (OMG. That was a long time ago) from moon-audio. I only got to use it like 25 times. I paired it with Woo Audio Fireflies tube amp. The sound is amazing. The only problem is that the HD 800 is so clear, which can be unforgiving to unrefined copies. Also, it is very bright. I like bright sound and pronounced sibilance, but I get tired of it after sometime, like there's overstimulation. Due to lengthy work hours, cumbersome to set up (Fireflies being very heavy glass and those cubes take a lot of real estate on my table), waning interest in music, and pure laziness to clean off dust, I have not used my HD800 for the past 4 years. It's still there in the box. The only reason why I stumbled upon this video is that I recently learned that they came up with HD 800S and I wanted to know how it sounds compared to HD 800. Based on this video, and from the comments below, it seems like I am not missing anything.

That headphone looks insanely cool and modern. Im just worried about the copper connection to the sliding rail on the headband will either wear out easy or add a easy place for dust to accumulate on and cause distortions. I may be being rediculous. Still, a very tempting headphone.

Plenty of people in the comments agree with him, me included. I modded the HD800 with the SBF mod, and when I purchased the HD800s, I preferred the former. If the HD800s tried to sound more like an HD650, it failed to add anything without taking away what is special in the HD800.
