Alright!! I'm just gonna say my opinion - you are the best reviewer for audio stuff. Why ? You doesn't hype up every product you get your hands on / You actually provide good sound description and proper comparisons , other options , gear pairings , specific music examples , do interviews with the founders and much more / You actually take time to reply all of the viewers comments. Passion for Sound is aptly named. Really appreciate the work you do. Without your work we would have wasted lots of money of many products and not liking them after we buy. You are a hero man. God bless you !!!

I bought an 800S about a month ago. They're a nice addition to my collection and contrast nicely with my LCD-4z. The 4z still gets about 80% of "head time" but the 800S is great for when I'm in the mood for more acoustic music. I actually find the 4z to be more comfortable than the 800S because the pads are deeper and they clamp better while the 800S kind of slides about on my head. I have dekoni pads coming this week as well as a shorter cable from Norne Audio which should make these headphones more comfy and I'm guessing I might start using them equally as much as I do the 4z. Good video and I'm glad you decided to make a review before selling them

@@x32i77 I've actually had the HE6se for almost two years now however I've never had the best amp to pair them with. I have a powerful amp on the way that will do 16w into 32 ohms that should be a much better pairing then my current amp. On my current setup however I find the HE6se to be a good compromise between the 800S and 4z. It has the treble sparkle and soundstage (with the grill mod) of the 800S and the bass slam and dynamics of the 4z

Imo this is an extremely nuanced and accurate review of the 800s. Will recommend this video to potential future owners from now. It can be the best headphone for some, but since it's not an all rounder like many of the newer competitors, you really need to understand its strengths and weaknesses before going in. That being said, the old girl still has some tricks up its sleeve that other models just can't seem to match, like the very excellent staging and imaging.

First I must say that you are one of my top 3 favorite reviewers. Mostly because you communicate your impressions very well and your sound preferences consistently align pretty closely with my own. I generally agree with you on your impressions of the Focal Clear vs ( I have had the Clear, HD800S, HD800 and many others) the HD800S. However in this case I must respectfully say that your assessment of the Focal Clear being anywhere near the HD800S in terms of sound stage, imaging or perhaps accuracy to the original recording are not close. I sold the Clear after trying to find its 'magic' on the RME ADI-2, ZMF Pendant and several other amps. The problem? It is downright claustrophobic in terms of sound stage, imaging and general space or openness of sound. My assessment of the above characteristics of the Clear hold true against most $1500+ headphones I have owned, HD800S, HD800, Stellia, LCD-i4 and on and on. However if you remove soundstage , openness and to a much lesser extent, imaging from the equation then they are one of the best headphones at any price. In contrast the HD800S soundstage is super wide open (almost to wide) with pinpoint imaging and the ability to convey the most delicate texture of any quality recording. There are recordings that I have where I was in the room for many hours of practices and final recording and the HD800S are way ahead of the Clear in accuracy for anything other than EDM or Hip Hop. While I have no doubt that you enjoy the Clear more (many do) If you have the chance, listen to a recording where you have either heard it live or you were perhaps in the studio. It is not close. 95% of any perceived flaws of the HD800S can be fixed with very little EQ and they respond VERY well to EQ. Don't get me wrong, the Clear is fantastic and fun. But if you crave soundstage, a truly open sound or pinpoint accuracy and detail over 'fun'. The choice is easy- just my opinion. Cheers.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi yellowjacket, thanks for your comment. I definitely agree that the HD800S is clearly superior in soundstage. Perhaps I understated the difference in this video. My reason for preferring the Clear consistently is that I find the Clear to be a better representation of the timbre and tone of the real thing (live music). As a non-EQ user, I don't try to get into that discussion (other than an occasional SonarWorks calibration to flatten the curves) because I'm not an experienced EQer. Personally, I enjoy each headphone for its own sound, but I recognise there are many people out there who enjoy EQing so neither is right or wrong.
@04yellowjacket
@04yellowjacket 3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I appreciate the thoughtful reply. RE: EQing, you also have to be cautious as a reviewer of 'audiophile' gear because the so called 'purists' will come after you hard if you embrace EQing in any way. Even though recording engineers often use EQ and DSP to fine tune audio. I find that it takes the HD800S from somewhat flawed to perfect. Kind of OT here but I also love another headphone/earphone/IEM (?) that almost requires EQ. The Audeze LCDi4. I don't think you have posted any reviews on them but have you had a chance to give them (or any of their lesser siblings) a listen? If you were not so far away I would be tempted to send you mine. I would be really interested in your nuanced impressions of their sound.

Good point about the purists, but I'm always happy to have those kinds of conversations - leads to a richer community. 🙂 I haven't tried any of the Audeze earphones, only the LCD-2 headphones I once owned. @@04yellowjacket Hi I have the LCDi3s which I understand are not that different from the i4s but I wasn’t that impressed at first; over time they seem better maybe it’s the burn-in they talk about? Anyway they are more impressive as time goes on. Do you like them as much as over ears headphones?

You've touched on something interesting with what headphones are best for specific types of music. I'd be curious to a see a video comparing many more headphones and what genre's they are best for. Would be helpful for those who only prefer certain music genre's like Rock/Hard Rock and want the best headphone's offering nice punch & slam
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting idea, JTB, but it's a very tricky topic outside of a specialist headphone like the HD800S. For example, on rock tracks, I might like the bass and drive of the Empyreans, but others might want more attack in the guitars. Some might like a headphone that brings forward the midrange for vocals in pop while others might want a v-shaped sound for more excitement. Ultimately, I think it's more a headphone-specific thing more a genre-specific thing. Hope that makes sense

800S is tuned for a bigger sound stage mostly because of frequency response. The drivers are extremely detailed and it's frequency curve here to emphasize it. This EQ settings are not working for everything out of the box, but you can smooth it with a tube amp with darkish tubes installed (JJ, Sovtek etc). Just lower the input to the amplifier and compensate it with tube gain. This will smooth the high end details and thus will emphasize the low end. Adjust the amount for the taste) Please let me know if that helps)

sticker modded 8xx owner here - this review is so spot on. i spent $700 and hours of my time modding a headphone expecting it to sound like heaven. i then spent another $1000 on a real hd 800s to make sure people weren't crazy. no... people really are crazy. the hd 800s and its variants, are not "amazing" - they can be, but when i reach for my 560s over the 800s, we generally have a problem. and that problem is so much of the music i enjoy, needs something the 800s don't have. a gooey nougat center. they're a brilliant set of cans that should be used as a lesson to teach people about never meeting their heroes :) all silliness aside - spot on mate. dead spot on. i'm keeping the 8xx and sending back the 800s as they are identical enough that i couldn't pick them apart in a blind test. and i do reach for them often, and often i put them back down after a few songs and reach for something else. they "can be" fun, but that's a tall ask for the $$$. all that said, this review explained to myself what i couldn't put into words. thanks for that one!

Both are good headphones with some shortcomings: the Focal sound bit metallic and etched in the treble but with more explosive dynamics and meat on the bones where the HD800s don’t have the metallic tinge but with broader treble peak (but less dips and peaks). HD800 respond very well to eq, where I find the Clear I can’t quite get rid of that metallic tone. Putting aside their frequency characteristics I find the Sennheiser dynamic drivers a little more natural and cohesive sounding than the Focal, so there’s something the 800s bring to the table that comes through after longer listening sessions for me

Ah, the Senn 800S. It has received a wide range of preference since the introduction of the 800. The 700 has kinda fallen by the wayside. I took a jump into this range of headphones with the Hifiman Arya and the Focal Clear; from the Hifiman HE-400i and Edition XX, the Focal Elex, the Drop Dan Clark Aeon X, also the Drop Senn 6XX, and the Drop Koss ESP/95X. ALL of these are very nice-sounding, competent, and different-sounding headphones. I'm leaning a bit toward the Clear as my favorite. I haven't heard the 800S, but from what I've distilled from all the reviews I've heard and read there are some great things it does, and perhaps some not so great. I do have both a Bottlehead Crack and a Bottlhead S3X. Very different sounding animals. My curiosity is how the 800S might work with the Crack. The Crack is notably softer and rounder, and I wonder whether that might work as a good complement to the 800S?

I recently ordered the HD800S despite it's controversial sound signature because I want something different. I currently have a Hifiman Arya which I would consider to be basically perfect to my ears...but ironically since owning them, I've become less critical about whether a headphone will sound "perfect" because I know I can always count on my Arya's and now my end game is to fill two "specialty spots" - 1) highly detailed and wide staging headphone 2) impactful, dynamic and meaty low-end headphone. The HD800's seem perfect for the 1st spot and for the 2nd spot I would imagine an LCD series or maybe Focal, but that wont be for another 2-3 years.

I realise many audiophiles don't like messing with sound, but EQ does wonders with these headphones and the HD800. You can find the annoying treble peaks & drop it by 3-6dB, and wham, no more grateing treble. As for punch and drive, that can be resolved with an EQ bass shelf of about 3-5dB. For those who are naysayers about the concept of changing the sound, think about how much the headphone itself changes the sound. That's why there is no such thing as a perfect sounding headphone to everyone.
@PassionforSound

Good points across the board, Simon. To clarify one point for anyone reading this, what Simon says is very true for a headphone like the HD800S, but it doesn't mean you can buy a cheap headphone and expect to EQ it to perform like an expensive headphone as there is more to it. Starting with a high quality headphone like the HD800S gives you lots of flexibility if you're into EQing.

I don't think that's a pairing if go with. Internal sound cards are powered by the PC power supply which will limit the output quality of the soundcard. I would probably take a different approach and choose headphones that aren't bought for a singular purpose. By the time you buy those three headphones, you could probably get yourself a pair of Elites or maybe a pair of ZMF Atriums which are excellent all-around headphones (although the Atriums may require a pad-swap for certain genres and isn't like a planar for bass). You'll get better sound by spending a bit more on 1-2 sets of headphones rather than buying many to compensate for the imperfections of each

The no EQ at all costs sentiment in this hobby does a huge disservice to listeners everywhere. The HD-800s when EQ is applied can quell the highs as well as boost the low end to a satisfactory level . The same people that are so anti-EQ are fine with stuffing a headphone with more dampening material that achieves the same outcome. The Audiosource EQ - One that I've owned since the 80s let's me Taylor the sound on my Speakers to fit the room as well as correct things that are in my headphones performance as well . My Hifiman Sundara's are a bit Bass lite but with a slide of a knob they can be a very competent all round performer. I'm not a fan of software EQs but done with an analog EQ that is well made the end result is fantastic.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 жыл бұрын
There's no anti-EQ sentiment here. I personally choose to not EQ for a variety of reasons, but it's never discouraged. My point in this video is that you can't EQ one headphone to be identical to another because the properties of the driver's reproduction of the soundwaves goes beyond frequency alone. That doesn't mean people shouldn't EQ a headphone to their preferences though.

I have Arya, focal clear and Empyrean. While Arya is better than focal in most music (excluding metals), it can't beat empy imo. There some songs where treble peakiness is too much on the arya, specially in the poorly recorded tracks. Clear literally has zero treble peak on my sources (Topping dx7 pro & Ifi signature). Moreover, the bass on the arya might have a bit more bass than HD800s, it's no way near as good as the focal or Empyrean. The subbass on the Empyrean is also amazing. I would rank empy>>arya>clear. The sound stage is too small on the focal HPs unfortunately. Empyrean is one of those products that aren't too good in one segment, but at the same time doesn't have any flaws. Also, if possible try the copper meze cable for the Empyrean with alcantara pad. The stock cable with leather pad seemed to close down the sound stage a bit to my ears which is when I prefered arya. But after cable and pad swap, it's a whole new and quite superior experience

Hi Eivind, sometimes it does a little, but overall no. People who like to apply EQ will generally be able to know if a headphone is close enough to what they want based on a non-EQ explanation and the moment we start introducing EQ it gets very difficult to compare headphones. On top of that, an perhaps most importantly, I'm not an EQer and like to enjoy each headphone for its own sound. I've owned these twice and have finally settled on these. I've had Grados, Audeze LCD-X/4, Hi-FiMann etc and I came back to these due to the weight. They are simply the most comfortable headphones I've used. You just slip them on and forget about them, the Audeze have great presentation and bass presence however, I can't go longer than 1 hr before they become a burden. I could wear these all day and as a result I'm happy with the sound presentation and lack of bottom end - the higher treble doesn't actually bother me.

Interesting to hearvyoue thoughts on this, Michael - thanks! It would make sense that the Clear MG won't expand significantly beyond the original Clear because the tuning will be restricting it somewhat. The additional warmth in the tuning of the Clears will reduce the sense of space and scale in the stage, but I personally find it more natural so I'm glad they've kept the tuning as they have. Looking forward to hearing them one day.

I own the HD800S now. I have them connected to a balanced cable on my Jotunheim 2. They sound phenomenal after applying EQ, but honestly I just don't find them comfortable at all. The oversized cups slide around on my head and cause itching. I've got the Meze Empyrean on the way, so I look forward to doing a comparison between the two. I expect the Empyrean will be more comfortable. I used to own the HD700 and HD595, both of which I considered very comfortable (but much too dark/fuzzy in terms of sound...the step up to $1000+ headphones is dramatic). Thanks for the great videos Lachlan!

The HD800S/Jot 2 combo would be great! I get what you mean about the comfort too - comfort is often a very personal thing. I think you'll like the Empyreans a lot, but be prepared for a much warmer sound than the HD800S. They're still very resolving, so no thickness, but warm - particularly coming from the HD800S. I hope you love them as much as I do.

@@PassionforSound Wow. I just got them today and I've had trouble taking them off my head. Just mind blowing. This is exactly the sound signature I was searching for. Initially I connected them to my Jotunheim but I noticed the left driver was giving me crackling sounds in many tracks, so I switched to my cheap tiny FiiO DAC (with balanced output). It was night and day. I think the Jot was pumping far too much power into the electrostatic film. With the FiiO I have zero desire to EQ these. They are perfect.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
That's a worry about the distortion! The Jot should only cause problems if you're turning it up too loud (which is a bit too easy with the Jot). They'll sound even better from a better device than the FiiO so maybe try again with the Jot, but go gently with the volume 🙂
@SpykerSpeed
@SpykerSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound You're right, I was listening too loudly at first because I was trying to hear for detail. I've currently got the Empyreans connected to the THX 789 with the FiiO only serving as the DAC. Much better detail here than coming straight from the FiiO, and the bass seems to be more reigned in. @@PassionforSound Well from what I hear they are going to selling off their headphone portion of the company. They probably were doing really well and then had some idiots try to figure maybe we can just mass market this like bose and neglect quality. I know bluetooth headphones are pretty weak, but recently I was in search for one. I had tried the sennheiser 458BT and momentum and I didn't like either. The 458 actually had a buzz/hum situation going on no matter what you did. I only chose them because I know they do produce some quality headphones or so I thought. Beyerdynamic Lagoon/traveler ANC smashed those headphones all around, sonically. I actually tried this company Master & Dynamic, NY based, and purchased their MW65 with Be drivers. Quite certain it's Be coated drivers, but they do run for 600 with tax. I got mine on black friday for 400 with payment option. Honestly those headphones are really nice and ANC does not disturb the sound at all. Not sure why nobody is talking about them and they have few reviews. I'm almost positive they kill the panda's, airpod max pro's, bose/sony for sure to my ears at least.

Hi Filippos, the Mainline is in a totally different league from the Asgard 3 (as it should be). They Mainline brings greater resolution and detail, better soundstaging and the option to run in low or high output impedance mode which can adjust the sound a bit. The A90 is plenty powerful enough, but just not as good an amp. My understanding of gaming vs music listening is that gamers prioritise spatial cues so they can locate opponents they can't see. All of these amps will do that well, but the A90 will provide a flatter soundstage which might enhance the left-right detail and accuracy, but at the cost of distance front-back

The Focal Utopia’s are a complete rip off compared to these. They are way too similar and the Utopia’s 5.5k AUD price tag almost feels like extortion by comparison to these. These HD800s’s sound magical especially when driven by tubes and the price of less than 2k AUD is a total steal in terms of price to performance ratio. The detail and resolution is pretty much exactly the same as the Utopia’s the only real difference is the slightly elevated bass and dynamics of the Focal but the Sennheiser’s are more balanced even if they are a little leaner in presentation. Nice review though! 👍

I don't agree as I find the Utopias suit more music better whereas the HD800S have a certain sweet spot where they excel and other areas they don't so much. I feel like the Utopias can also take a significant step up with the right amplification (i.e. a nice tube amp) so I still feel they're the better headphone. That said, for the price, the Utopias are more than twice as good as the HD800S so value is definitely a factor! There's also personal preference to be considered so this isn't to say that either of us is right or wrong 🙂

@@PassionforSound yeah I hear you so I guess it does all come down to personal preference and yes you probably could also say that the Utopia is ultimately the better ‘musical’ headphone but I just find the differences so minor for it to not be an issue at all. Acoustic Alchemy, Larry Carlton, The Rippingtons and Lee Rittenour etc sound amazing with the HD800s. The bass can sometimes need a bit of a bump but that can be done with EQ. @@PassionforSound I'm sure they have made their research costs back by now and then some. The last reason you gave seems the most likely to me though. Could be that the plastic they use is super expensive, but the thin and easily dented metal mesh they use makes me think it is more likely to reduce production cost.

I can't say for sure, but I do know that companies need to consider many factors with their pricing. Another one we haven't mentioned is that profits of existing products have to cover the time and expenses while designers come up with the next product too. I'm not trying to justify Sennheiser's pricing strategy because I don't know exactly what it is. Just trying to illustrate the types of factors that have to be considered.
