GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via KZbin and Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.

At 1:47 the long hair guy behind Arakaki sensei ... it's me! Beautiful day, there we were during the last 10 of 100 Naihanchi at the "2016 100 Kata challenge. The day after, Guinness World record, about 4000 karateka all through Kokusai Dori practicing Kata.

While on Okinawa 71 - 72 I took the style of Shorin Ryu Matsumura. The chief instructor was a Red Belt who said he hat trained over 65 years in that style. I still practice it to this date. Some years back a practioner of a different style wanted to challange me. I told him my style and he backed down. I have never had to fight anyone. Just the name fights for me. Great videos. Thanks.

An Oral tradition is the root of what begat martial arts and in fact the traditionaly history of human kind by way of campfire story telling. It is the tradition of the peaceful warrior. It is a part of the entirety of the human heritage. Dōmo arigatō Toshimitsu Sensei.

Only thing that makes my hearth bleed is these fat muricans (at 4:50) that has get their black belts in 3 years of lazy training. In my time you would get only green belt in 3 years of HARD training almost daily :D Good and well made video tho!

another problem I see regularly is peoples misunderstanding of what a 1st dan rank actually represents. There are a lot of people who think that a 1st dan is a high rank in karate, but in reality it is only a rank representing that the student understands the basic of the styles. I think a lot of this has to do with the difference in the way most schools train nowadays compared to how they did 40-50 years ago. It's unfortunate because a lot of schools worldwide have "watered down" their arts and the students of such schools never move beyond the point of practicing from pre-aranged drills and light contact sparring if any, to truely knowing how to apply what it is they have learned. Luckily there are some schools that do still keep a far more traditional approach to teaching karate but they seem to be few and far between here in the US.

Very nice video sir. The project sounds great. At 0:11 in this video there is a picture of a Master holding a weapon that I have only ever seen in Kung Fu. I cannot read the patch on his uniform to see information about his style. Would it be possible for you to provide the name of the master and his style? This is very intriguing!

Though I see many pictures these days of Okinawan masters that have a rack of weapons usually associated with Kung Fu in their homes and training halls. Fascinating!
