Ah, there is one great difference between the boxing concept and the one in Karate or Kung Fu. Boxing has no abstraction into forms that´s why you see the defense while punching. In Karate and Kung Fu you have just a short moment that you would call a "punch". The defense would be before that. The punch is actually the counter (defensive idea of Karate and Kung Fu). You stopped an attack (defense), you grab the opponent and maximise the power of the punch (and destabilize him or open him up) by pulling him towards you into the punch. Only the last part of it is what we see in the video. Seth knows this actually ;-)

Kungfu is very vast and varied. There isn't necessarily a specific "kungfu straight punch", there are lots of different straight/cross punches in Kungfu. Tibetan Style (hop gar) has a very unique long style of striking that shares some similarities to Choy Li Fut. Very different from a "straight/cross" from Xingyiquan Kungfu. In the Shaolin Kung fu forms, everything is overemphasized to teach how to generate power, going straight from point A to B . Most people don't even know that this is what the horse stance to bow stance teaches, the first of the five steps.

The horse stance and bow stance are not use for punching, they're use for conditioning the strenght of the martial artist legs. They're not fight positions but conditioning positions, to throw punches in this positions is just for distraction of pain and for practicing the correct wrist positionn for punching. With the bow stance with every punch you switch your foot position and you make this by activating the hips.

For Kung Fu, Sifu Chris points out that the stance of the chuun choi is temporary, and the punch has extra reach over a typical straight, so it might not be as risky as it seems to not have the back hand guarding assuming you return to a guard after. Also, Boxing has an abnormally high and close guard which exaggerates differences.

Never had heard of Hop Gar before, but I train Choy Li Fut and there's some interesting comparisons. The way we're taught individual hand movements is similar to what Sifu Chris shows here, but in most forms, we actually use a bladed stance, REALLY similar to Karate (or even fencing). Sifu Chris's explanation makes a lot of sense, though, with something else I heard before: that stances in Kung Fu aren't meant to be seen as static stances that you "sit in", but more like snapshots of footwork/movement patterns.

Funny, I'd say the same with some kung fu styles. Some schools overemphasize form and theories, but forms are just teaching tools. If you learn the meaning behind those tools you come to understand balance, body mechanics, and how to engage your muscles to perform any kind of action. For me, as I read about kung fu forms and analyzed how they move the body, I came to understand boxing more intuitively.

It just teaches the basic movement, how to generate power. You don't use it like that, it's the same as the boxing cross. Beginners usually take time to learn how to do the straight cross properly, in Kung Fu, you rep this constantly, horse to bow, before you know it, you move your body in the right way, sinking your weight where it should be.

It's amazing how much power turning the thumb down adds to the punch. And a very simple thing to do.

Nice vidro of the different disciplines. In Jawbreakers, the coach really made corrections to a lot of older boxing faux pas. Such as narrower stances (back then for speed because they weren't worried about take downs) to the more neutral 50/50 stances (due to more balance and better to counter shoots and take downs). The end drill of the fist is shared by a lot of karate, King Fu arts also. It all depends on the scnool and style. For example, Mexican Boxing style prefer the straight in and then while the thumb side is up. They basically "stamp" the fists in. Wing Chun, "Sun Character(word)" punch is very similar. The karate punch employs the hand/arm returning to give the exploding arm even more power. But every discipline teaches that in some form or another. Boxing and Kung fu have it also. But Karate's emphasis is more on the elbow returning and opposite elbow shooting. The last Shi Fu's punch is just one of the style that is generally called, Long Fist. Where they use the hand/arm in the back to help propel the front hand acting as one. Shao Lin Long fist really emphasize on that to yield power. But again. Across all disciplines everyone teaches a form of it to another. It is great to see them in action in one video though. All these punches are devastating if a person is to get hit by them. Great video, sensei Seth.

I'm a very amateur boxer. That was an AMAZING explanation of a straight right. I found the karate style interesting and it seems like it generates a lot of power. I don't get the kung fu stuff at all. It leaves you completely open. I feel like a decently trained cross from a boxer (or even the karate style punch you explained) generates the same, if not more, power, but doesn't leave you in a completely defenseless state. Saying, "That's how kids fight," is both accurate and sums it up perfectly: it only seems effective against someone who knows literally nothing about martial arts.

The thing is, Kungfu has the "Karate" style punch too. It has both (Karate itself has Chinese origin). The "long looking" punch in this video is unique to only certain Kungfu styles. I know it seems like he's exposed when he strikes like this, but it has a purpose, and it's very effective. It's fired out from long range with a lot of full body power, and is mixed together with sweeps, other strikes and takedowns. Not easy to learn through video though, you gotta find a good teacher.

Another great vid, thank you Seth. Something I've always wondered and perhaps I've asked or voiced this in the past, but how much of traditional karate empty hand do you think is about prepping for a long staff weapon. I've always wondered this as I've taught Gyka zuki from the idea of stabbing with a spear and shield . The hand comes from the hip and pushes the spear or Bo forward while the lead hand moves your shield out of the way. Just a thought exercise I guess. As for the kung fu strike I have seen that in White Crane kung fu. Anyway, awesome little vid keep them coming

Sensei Seth --thank you for your awesome videos-- when you can look up Isshin Ryu Karate punch and Wing Chun -- Both are executed in a vertical fashion. In my humble opinion, these are for short to medium range whereas the classical Karate corkscrew punch is for that of longer range/reach.

Also, the long fist pull fist is partially focused because it keeps you from over committing. Look at your feet in this video between your first attempts and when he told you to focus on the pulling hand. It's a drill to help you keep stable during the punch. You're welcome. Lol

Watch Chris Heintzmen's thumb, the way it is stashed up on his index finger, as opposed to wrapped around it.. That is how I learned vertical punched in wing chun, and how to make a first in Bando. That isn't the "usual" way. But if you know what you're doing, that's a whole new wrapping weapon.

I throw the reverse punch like Joe Lewis does in his JLFS for full contact karate. Hold a high guard, add some torque by stepping to the left while shooting the hand from where it was before you shifted the body and importantly, the head off the centerline. Easier to show than describe. The flaw in traditional karate is that snap sound that's made when you finish the strike from the gi. We used to think that was power - not. Just the stopping of the technique.

Hello Seth, that was an excellent comparison, and actually this video gives the full spectrum of what the cross punch technique can be. The boxing way sacrifices some power to get protection, the karate way is in the middle, less protecting the chin but best balance between speed and power, (more time needed to alternate the oi and gyaku tsuki but more power because of the falling on the floor heavier and longer trayectory of the hand from point A to point B), and the chinese way is the raw expression of what that the okinawan people later modified. More "reckless" in terms of protection, but more piercing power, Although you may have noticed that it is difficult to mantain balance due to having the two feei in line perpendicular to the target. you don´t see much of those in kata. I invite you to try the Shito Ryu style of Hiki Te. It is just a bit lower and a bit back, from what you did, your hand would be right below the floating rib, and above the hip, like covering that "gap" where there is no bone below that rib. You will like it.

I'm unsure about this but as someone who dabbles in a little bit of stickfighting and HEMA. That Kung Fu punch feels the mechanics of a thrust, its almost like an evasive lunge. I usually load up a single handed thrust from the lead leg, from the weapon leading side, at waist level or from Hangen/Stier. From there I could step contrilaterally with the rear leg or step back the lead leg, usually more diagonally if advancing/retreating and the off-hand naturally extends itself like a counterbalance behind. Thrusting from the rear, to get a more balanced thrust and keep the weapon centred to the hips, a short diagonal step is taken with the lead leg, ending up with the position of the 2nd follow up punch shown in the video.
