I never thought it was lame cuz I always knew it’s was fake and it’s just fun to me, but yeah I do think wrestling isn’t as good as it used to be and definitely grew more of an understanding of how difficult it is to do. I tried a free wrestling class and was gonna join the school had it been closer to me, even thought about moving to Philly for it, unfortunately I couldn’t afford it. But man was it hard and definitely something that takes a long time to get really good at just like any sport.

I'm really glad you showed how the ring is built. That's an important detail that tends to get missed in a lot of videos like this. It demystifies the bumps and shows that the ring doesn't really have much padding, so those bumps are still pretty solid. You're not breaking any bones, but you're certainly feeling those landings.
@wasabij Жыл бұрын
I know there are probably a lot of reasons they stick to that setup, but I can't help but imagine a safer ring that still does the job of selling the bumps.
@JackgarPrime Жыл бұрын

Been watching pro wrestling since the 80s and I just got my Kenpo karate blue belt (with one stripe) today. As a wrestling fan, I could say: 1. You were extremely athletic and bumped and sold well. Extremely well, most newbs don't sell well. 2. You were also blown up pretty early on 3. Vaughn gave you lots of rest time between moves. That's part of the carrying lol 4. Wanna do that for 30 minutes? As a karate fan, I could say 1. The bumps are endless breakfalls and throws. I did that Wednesday at karate for 2 hours and my back is still hamburger. 2. Your karate definitely showed; that jumping roundhouse by the turnbuckle was great. 3. You got more "keyed in" the longer the match went, your karate instincts and training kicked in. Muscle memory for the win! 4. Wes Lee really is great in NXT, isn't he? Total diamond in the rough.

I would think your ability to breakfall would actually have a significant benefit from pro wrestling training. Not to mention your body's ability to adapt to those sorts of impacts in general. A pro wrestler also has to be an expert at gauging distance and timing. Knowing how to NOT hurt someone with a move that very easily could is a testament to having excellent precision. So while you probably won't be doing a scoop slam in an MMA match, there are so many smaller, more subtle technical and psychological details that carry over.

Thank you for covering this! I've attended pro-wrestling in 2017, and based on my experience, I can definitely say that matches might be choreographed (although there are styles of pro-wrestling that utilize full-contact and actual competition), but you CAN still actually take pro-wrestling as a legit martial art. First, it's based on actual wrestling like catch-as-catch-can and you can use this kind of moves, here are few examples: my friend and a fellow pro-wrestler took down an attacker with headlock takedown, and our coach escaped the front waist lock position with vertical suplex in an actual fight. Second, the training includes a lot of cardio, exercises for strength and flexibility, some actual martial arts practices like tap boxing. Third, Brazilian capoeira also has choreographed fights and karate has katas, but nobody says capoeira or karate are fake and unusable.

you got some really good pros on your side here! both of them really knew what they are talking about. I really dig jacks look and persona for the indies. Just a ligit huge scary mustach man who does old school chops and lariats to put over some of those more flippy young wrestlers, and he has the build and hight to throw people through the ring and the expirence to make sure they land well. you did great for a first session though it was plain to see that you felt more comfortable with the more judo/mma style moves like armdrags and submission holds :P

Nice to see the world finally catching up to how hard and real wrestling is. Its not abot the fictional outcomes, its about the storytelling in the ring. And these men/women tell a brutal story. Among the most brutal in all entertainment. Amongst the toughest performers/athletes we have ever seen. Much respect for all wrestlers.

big credit to you Seth giving this a go, I know you normally give martial arts a go, but pro wrestling was a great idea

I think anyone who says wrestling is fake doesn't understand the purpose of wrestling. In martial arts, competitively, it's about taking the opponent out or causing them so much pain they quit. In wrestling it's a high stakes game of protecting your collaborator as much as possible while making it look like you are taking them out. Having been around long enough to watch the Mankind/Undertaker cage match which is, arguably, the best display of professional wrestling in the history of the sport, the amount of damage they take is absurd and yet they still continued to wrestle. The fact that neither of them got killed is a statement of why they are two of the best pro wrestlers.

This video just came up to the top of my feed as I watch a lot of wrestling. As an avid fan, you're really getting the hang of it! Expressions are 100% a must in becoming a pro wrestler as it makes matches better. Keep it up and you might start doing this often! (also you look like James A. Janisse, the host of the Dead Meat show)

I'm gonna be honest, for the longest time, I've been in the camp of people who scoffed at wrestling not being "real" (as opposed to actual combat, like in MMA), but what really made me come around was the movie "The Wrestler" with Micky Rourke. They may not beat each other bloody like in MMA, but the amount of physical stress these guys put on their bodies with all kinds of acrobatics and athletics is incredible, all for the sake of what basically boils down to a sports-theater performance.

Coming from someone who had a 15 year long full time wrestling career, the best way I found to describe it, we are stuntman atheletes preforming live action violent ballet.

I love how when I was growing up in the 80s, wrestling would get shit on. Now it is on every continent on the globe (sans Antarctica but give it time) and on TV pretty much every night of the week. You want big production? WWE/AEW. Want more intimate? NXT, TNA, etc. Want live and so close you get sweat and blood on you? Spot Monkey, et al. At this point, we all know how it works. The trick is who can make it look the best. That is why we love pro wrestling. How do the performers make it so seamless that even though we all know how it works that we cannot tell how they are making it all work. Great vid, great bumps, from a long time fan...you did fantastic. You have my sub. 🤘

really interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes in the prep, and very entertaining for the run-through as well. you can see why some of the top guys go into acting, because the're already doing it, plus have the physique to put on an impressive show.

As kids we absolutely hurt each other after watching wcw and wwf. But in the very few fights I've been in, because we'd beat each other up so much for fun it added a toughest that was hard to match, and an ability to control others and body movements that allowed me to win the fights, without actually putting anyone in hospital. Just being able to manhandle others is pretty handy, and wrestling teaches the balance needed.

In a way, as an art form, it seems like when bands or musicians go on tour. Rehearsing, developing a set list, when to solo or improvise, etc. All so similar. Not to mention confidently captivating an audience.

Pro-wrestling began with Catch-as-catch-can wrestling aka Catch Wrestling. Catch Wrestling is also the origin of folks type wrestling (American high school wrestling) and had serious influence on other grappling martial arts like Judo, Vale Tudob(via Luta Libre) and BJJ (one of the lesser known Gracies was a Catch wrestler). I look forward to the video where you try to use them and I hope you reach out to one of the many catch wrestlers out there that could, maybe, help you translate the pro-wrestling to catch.

I have flash backs to my days of wrestling training and the rope burns from running the ropes and the aches and pains. Having to do 10 push ups every time you fed your arm to your opponent for instance in a Irish wip or if they were going to give you a suplex etc (I see it now in WWE and it really bugs me) your opponent should claim the hand! Getting used to working the left etc. It's tough! And it's not just doing the moves there's so much more to pro wrestling like showing out, selling, psychology, storytelling. I trained for about 3 years and then went on to referee for 14 years....was pleased to see the back of taking bumps!
@nzkisawol Жыл бұрын
Great job seth! You probably won't see this because how late I am, but one thing is you tend to dead sell a lot. That means you take a bump and lay dead. Its better to active sell on the ground, show the audiance what hurts, but as a beginner, great stuff!
