it was a common practice of pioneers and homesteaders to burn down their old shack when they moved on , just to retrieve the nails so they could reuse them to build a newer house . this was done because nails were a rare commodity back in the day , their were very few blacksmiths who had the talent to make hand wrought nails . also the knowhow to make the ores needed ,where to find it and use the right chemistry was known only to the few . i learned this info at the saugus iron works when i visited there.

ratrod diesels Also, nails are pain in the rear (no pun intended) when you have to make a hundred or so of them, especially hob nails! Ugh I really don't enjoy making them, and there have been many times that I've claimed that I don't know how just to get out of having to do it. Lazy? Yes, but anyone who works iron can tell you how tedious and awful it is to make a useful amount of nails.

@@waynes4612 modern nails are usually made from a low to medium carbon steel so they do get softer with heat but hand forged nails from back in the day were made from wrought iron not steel so would not have been hardened like today's nails. Wrought iron doesn't harden like steel.

To make can-stoves for my youngsters, I did the following: 1. Leftover bolts and nuts were used in the bottom to raise the stove above the ground. 2. I drilled many holes and deburred them for safety.. 3. holes were drilled in the very bottom of the can, one inch wide aroung the side up from the bottom and a wide band of holes around the top. Less damage to the can, it is stronger and no sharp edges. No need for power tools if you own an old fashion hand drill for back-up.

I took a pull top, painted it white with nail polish and bent it at the small part to make a stand. I then glued that "flat part" to the top of an indoor thermometer I had which now hangs neatly on a 3M hook inside my fifth wheel. I can use these as hangers on just about anything- next project, use them at either end of a power strip and hang that on the wall. I get my nail polish on clearance sales. Makes great markers for storage boxes, etc.

Hey SensibleP just a little tip or hack to take paper labels from cans or glass jars is to use a petrolium jelly product or any kind of cooking oil just use it on the adhesive part and let absorbe for a while or put it in the sun and that will soften most adhesives for an easy peel. Yes. One accidental slice across either hand could be the death of you out in the bush, and most certainly a major set back for loading gear, lugging gear, water, wood...GLOVES ARE A REQUIREMENT. I carry a few pair in my rucksack and daypack/buttpack for risky business like this. One superficial cut, one nasty burn could be all it takes to turn your dream camping vacation into a living nightmare. Gloves are injury prevention - carry them. If you have the strength to carry metal tools you have the strength to carry gloves too - pack them and use them.

Could you use the bottle opener end of the can opener to bend back the sharp points? Just curious if it would work. Remember when coffee came in real cans? They were sturdier and made great camp stoves. (Now that I started down memory lane, I should teach my grandboy how to make a “buddy burner” to go with the stove!! Strips of corrugated cardboard spiral rolled into a tuna can and impregnated with paraffin. We cooked burgers on them at Girl Scout camp. And nobody died!

Great tips, I have dogs so the cans from their food are a jem for this. Punched the holes in and I have plenty for myself and others. With or without the holes, they can still be used for cooking or heating. They also make great candle holders with candles from the dollar store or make your own. We can't afford not to learn these things in order to be prepared and know what and how to do this. We are living in serious days.. so be ready. Thank all those that post these videos to help us that may not be as knowledgeable on how to survive when we are left in the dark. Ignorance IS NOT BLESS..🤔😴THANK YOU .

A pot for boiling. A pan for cooking or baking. A container for carrying stuff. Berries for example. A cup for drinking. A cookie cutter. A way to make your car sound more aggressive than it is to impress your friends or potential mates. Filled with concrete or rocks and used as a weapon against people trying to take your newly found mate. An alcohol container for when your mate points out your bad life choices. An amplifier to listen through the walls while your mate talks to her best friend. A way to end your life. A symbolic representation of why life is beautiful and finding the greater meeting of our existence. A stove after our mate takes our house and you end up living in the woods cold and alone. A knife to hold up a convenience store. Flattened into a shiv to teach your annoying room mate about respect. A self defense weapon to prevent... penetration. a container to hold fruit.

Love it Brother. Some great ideas. Creativity is the backbone of the survivalist and the tin can is one of the most useful 'throwaway' items going. i can't believe that people here in the UK give all of their 'rubbish' to the councils to dispose of. and they pay the council for the privilege. Even as scrap this stuff will get an income instead of becoming an expense. My loft is packed with 'rubbish' like cans, glass, paper and card. Thank you. With my warmest regards, Richard from Taunton, UK.

I remember tye old ton can where a manual can opener would take off tye both sends. Then we would hammer them flat & put in the can box. Then my dad could use them to patch holes at the house, barn, chicken house. The wrappers we would throw in the paper box to help start fires in the heating stove.

Instant Coffee tastes a little less instant if you give it a minute to calm down in the water before slurping. So a salesperson once told me. I keep vacuumpacked real coffee deep frozen, instead. It loses some flavor, but taste better than instant coffee if SHTF.

As my father used to say there are two kinds of coffee lovers. One type loves coffee so much that as long as it isn't so strong that a mouse can walk across it without getting his tail wet, and the coffee was brewed within living memory they are fine with drinking it, and the other type of coffee lover wouldn't dream of sipping instant coffee, and needs vacuum-packed, deep frozen real coffee to face the zombie hordes in the approaching Appocolypes.

I just set the open can in a small pot of boiling water to heat and eat. Sometimes I eat Right out of the can. Sometimes I pour it over rice or doritoes. I save the cans for various projects. Several together can make a chimney for a tent stove. I save the pull tab lids for targets. Hang them on a nail by the pull tab I am thinking that a Vienna sausage can might be just right to make a tealight candle lantern

I don't mean to be negative but you have more tools then I carry. I found when you're making a tin can fire you use a decent-sized rock to put inside to help it keep its shape and eliminate cut fingers. By setting the small can after it's done a larger coffee can wear you have ChurchKey the bottom you still get the draft plus a more stable base for your pot. I've never used fire starter except a cotton ball with dry pine straw then adding small branches. I do carry a screwdriver no punch. I use the same Rock method when securing a hole. I wouldn't waste my nails on an alarm. Also I rarely use twine but carry an extra amount of 20 gauge fishing line or dental floss since the metal isn't able to cut through the metal opening. Maybe things are different because I started when I was 6 & my Dad was a Navy Survival Instinct instructor. I'm 64 now and have been doing the same thing all my life. I wasn't taught these lessons because of SHTF, but more for the devastating weather conditions we lived in as we moved across country and out of country. He had been in China, Korea and Vietnam, starting off his Naval career at as a UDT.

I've been making tealight lanterns from empty cans with a can piercer punch. Quick and easy to do. I made an alcohol stove too. I ordered a can opener punch style like you use for Hobo Stoves from amazon. It never arrive. Why do amazon think it's ok to take my money and make me wait 20 days for nothing? I'll try to buy one from a cook shop.

$ store pliers will help you bend over 1/4 inch of sharp metal. It strengthens the can and prevents cuts and scratches ( a cut unattended can kill ..always disinfect and cover ). I sure miss those larger coffee cans. 👍👍
