SF, I really appreciate the videos you've posted here, because I'm coming to the faith after a lot of wasted years, and learning about a faith that is profoundly more than I expected. Intellectually stimulating, emotionally deep, musically inspirational, personally challenging... Long have I been drawn to the art, architecture, and music which the church has inspired, and being able to learn more about traditional practices relating to Lent is making me even more desirous of the RCIA and spending the remainder of my life in the Church.

I wasn't taught about that in rcia(fasting on Fridays) or wensdays. When I read that from the start we were supposed to fast on every Friday I started doing my best to fast on Fridays fasting is important very important and I had no idea I should be fasting on fridays but know that I know I do my best to fast every Friday from now on

I went through RCIA 1999-2000 and wasn't properly catechized Regarding abstaining from meat on Friday..maybe because as I've learned years later in the USA it is not obligatory outside the Lenten season. I grew up Protestant and we had what was called solemn assembly in August each year before all the children were going back to school after summer break, and fasting meant no water or food for 3 consecutive days or more if you wanted to go additional days; including no chewing gum, candy or breath mints. Additionally, no TV, talking on the phone, listening to secular music, reading the newspaper, magazines, movies, parties, and no non Christian books, and for married couples, no sex, etc. It was a solemn time to pray read the Bible and seek God. Everyone was anointed with oil Sunday night at church and we had corporate prayer and everyone ages 12 to adults participated in the fast...it was up to each person to choose the number of days to fast or how may hours each day ... it was not encouraged for those who have never fasted before to try a three-day fast and also people who were elderly sick and or needed to take daily medicine it was encouraged that they would use common sense however there were many people in the congregation who were eager to fast the whole 3 days like it was like some type of competition to see who can do so and a few people would get sick and of course that meant the pastor would have to go to the hospital to visit them when all they needed to do was just exercise common sense but they considered it an act of Faith. This was over 30 yrs ago and I was so astonished that for Catholics fasting meant one meal and two smaller meals that doesn't equal a full meal with no snacking in between I thought that was so elementary but now that I am older and a practicing Catholic I truly struggle with this type of fasting and especially abstaining from meat on Friday because for so long Fridays was my pizza day and when I became Catholic I could not really get with that program but I am doing pretty good so far this year praise God Also growing up I never even heard of the Catholic church or someone being Catholic and now that I look back on everything I went to public schools and every Friday on the lunch menu there was always fish and macaroni and cheese I never knew that that was the district's way of making sure that children who practice abstinence on Friday would be able to have lunch without eating meat because then they can choose from either a fish or macaroni and cheese or both and I always just got both mac and cheese and fish and I liked it but I never knew that it was a Christian practice although I was considered a Christian although Protestant within the Pentecostal Apostolic persuasion. However honestly a Christian Catholic fasting during the month of Lent is child's Play compared to the Islamic month of Ramadan fasting from dawn to sundown in the Summers were gruesome yes I was a practicing Sunni Muslim for a few years and no food no drink no nothing for days on end weeks on end however at least we were able to break our fast at the Maghrib (sunset) prayer time and then in the evenings would have iftars (group dinner to break the fast with a sip of water based on the tradition of the prophet Muhammad ) together with family friends or even as a community at the local mosque..then wake up for Fajr (dawn) prayer 3am to eat dates, drink milk, eat something to fortify you for another day of fasting... outside the month of Ramadan another tradition of the prophet was too fast on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the year. When I was a Protestant Christian our local custom and tradition was to fast on Wednesdays I never knew why but it was just something that we were told and we used to have Wednesday night Bible studies as well. Maybe it was just because it was the middle of the week after Sunday Plus we considered the preaching and teaching of the Word of God as being our true nourishment so getting it on Sunday morning Sunday night then Wednesday night and of course if there were any other type of programs Ministries rehearsals and things like that that was going on during the week to take advantage of them. again to have that fellowship as well. However all of it -all of the experiences that I've had with various different types of religions and or denominations and Faith traditions have really taught me how important it is to seek God and to always do what we can to nourish the inner Man -our spiritual souls and from what I understand most major religions have some form of fasting because it recognizes that the body_ this flesh_ this carnal nature has to be put under subjection in order for the spirit to be able to receive from its creator -at least that's my understanding of it outside of reading the catechism of the catholic church which I do have right at the side of my bed right now ☺️ God bless everybody I hope everybody has a good Lenten season thanks for sharing the videos I enjoy seeing them and listening to them

Sir. I can tell you that fasting might be easy for men with smooth hands, but is literally impossible for men that labor as I do, who can't remember when they haven't woken up with a sore back. Keep in mind that for some of us that do not fast, food is nothing. It is everything and nothing. Notice too, that when God Almighty meets with his people in their most holy preparations, what does he do with them? He eats with them. There are eternal things, and the smaller ones with smaller revolutions. As a father I can tell you the greatest delight I've often experienced is watching my children eat. Fasting is about inordinate desire and over indulgence. When your heart is centered on what you consume and not what you are consumed by.

Hey I have a question. Being I am vegan and have been for over a year now, giving up meat on Fridays isn't really a big deal. So maybe I should give up something else instead? I was thinking fruit (and also coffee....I love my lattes in the morning. Actually the lattes will not be consumed for the duration of Lent). Anybody have any thoughts?
@SensusFidelium
@SensusFidelium 9 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Holt as long as you are a vegan for health reasons and not that you just think meat is bad then it's ok (there is a sermon on that in "other disorders of original sin" by Fr Ripperger). In that case yeah just do penance in place like cook something not to your liking or no sauce on something or things of that nature. Make something taste not as good on purpose. That is a solid one.
@Mega777seven
@Mega777seven 9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the post. I just wanted to comment, no, I do not think that eating meat is unethical in and of itself, in fact the sermon that you mentioned sounds interesting and I will definitely play that. I do have certain qualms about how the animals are treated in many of these operations; the CAFOs, overcrowding, chickens trapped in cages so long that their legs become stuck to the wires, etc, I do find these things disgusting. I think that the drive to make money is making us mad sometimes. But I find some of the antics of many vegans, such as going into restaurants protesting, yelling, and causing a scene, to be beyond silly. But anyway....... I have indeed cut out coffee. I did not cut out fruit from my diet (it seems foolish. Fruit is healthy and I still have a lot in my refrigerator). I do plan to fast often this Lent, as well as make frequent confessions and communions. I also thought that I would cut out things that disturb me, so I am not keeping up with politics this Lent. Maybe that last is not a good idea, I don't know. Anyway, I am going to make foods in ways that I don't particularly like, such as making oatmeal out of water instead of soy milk. That does seem like a good idea. Thanks for the advice!

Jeremy Holt. I agree with Katrina Rhoda Diaz. The idea of fasting and abstinence is not just on foods. It can be anything that you feel you are "addicted" to, it can be an activity that you like to do too much. Like Katrina Rhoda above for example, I gave up watching my favorite "detective" series on KZbin and films. As long as you do it for "sacrifice/penance" and it costs you to give it up. That time can be spent in prayers, to spend more time with God and get closer to Jesus.

I know that this is over a year old, but don't you remember the bible verse that says that we're to avoid sackcloth/ashes, put on our best clothes, and adorn ourselves? I'm no priest, but I can imagine that one would be cautioned against displaying visible signs of fasting.

The rules are the minimum required. You can always do more, just beware of temptations to pride, as Jesus points out when he discusses this topic. It's not okay to fast to such an extent that it damages your ability to fulfill the duties of your state in life, such as a nursing mother or a man in a labor-intensive job who could get fired for being too weak to complete his work well. Sensus fidelium has a bunch of good videos on "duties of state in life".

God does not ask us to do something that will be harmful to our health, or in the case of a pregnant woman, certainly she must take care of the health of her unborn child. So, yes, a pregnant or nursing mother could be exempt from fasting. It is always good to substitute another practice that renounces our own will: extra prayer, fasting from various forms of entertainment, etc. One with questions would do well to run it past his or her confessor. The point of the Lenten fast is reparation for sin and to impose the soul's mastery over one's appetites, by the practice of the virtue of temperance. This can be done by other means, which one may discuss, again, with one's confessor. There are guidelines out there concerning the amount of food one should eat at each meal. I am not sure what those are, but it is typically a good thing if one feels generally deprived to at least a small extent throughout Lent. To my mind, the quantity of food to be taken is somewhat subjective, based on a person's need. A large man who performs strenuous manual labor will have to eat more than a small accountant, for instance.
@majorpuggington

Not only is she exempt when pregnant it would be a grave imprudence to deprive one's unborn child of ANY needful nutrition. For the woman with child there are plenty of other penances, including pregnancy!

Question: I'm on day 7 of my fast; water & half cup of coffee daily. My goal is to fast for 20 days minimum. Would God be angry or dismiss my efforts, if I eat once in the evening (veggies & 1 serving of protein) for the remaining 20 days? I ask because, I'm a small frame woman and, am afraid to go to far to the point of getting sick/causing physical/organ damage. Forgive my ignorance 🙏👼

I wonder what possibly one could eat in first millennium in Europe, during Lent if animal food was prohibited? Is fish allowed? Even in my youth (in the 60 and up) there were no vegies or fruits available at that time of the year besides potatoes and sour krout. Which is great as Sally Norton MPH, calls vegetarian diet deadly. Maybe that is why our ancestors were lean and healthy.

Always good talks from Father. I'm amazed though that he seems not to recognize that any of us is capable of the most heinous sin. That he regularly says, "thanks a lot, Adam" as if we wouldn't have commited the same sins as Adam and Eve had we been in their places, is puzzling. Apparently, Father believes that he would have resisted temptation. If only God had created Father first, we would not have to suffer the consequences of Adam's sin.
@jackursus
@jackursus 6 жыл бұрын
Before the fall Adam and Eve were not like us. They had the three gifts of bodily immortality, integrity and infused knowledge. The gift of integrity is equivalent to exemption from concupiscence. It is called "integrity" because it effected a harmonious relation between flesh and spirit by completely subordinating man's lower passions to his reason. So, before the fall - Adam had an "edge" over fallen man in that he was not under the influence of concupiscence and also had a much deeper control over his passions...
@dlw3425
@dlw3425 4 жыл бұрын
@@jackursus Yes, I'm aware of that. That doesn't have any bearing on my comment that Father seems to believe that, had he been created first, with the same gifts as Adam, that he (Father) would not have fallen into sin. This seems to demonstrate a profound lack of humility. To say sarcastically, "thanks alot, Adam" is flippant. Adam and Eve are in heaven. I've listened to many of Father's talks and every time he mentions Adam, he makes the same odd sarcastic remark.

Does OCD spring up righteousness. Fasting is not a Hebrew nor Greek word What is it really? A linguistical study of the word “fast” reveals its evolution from the original Hebrew word “tsowm,” which literally means “to cover or to close ones mouth.” Does this really mean not eat? Might be part of it? What matters most is try to keep purity in one's mind and thoughts. By covering one's mouth one can keep ugly words from coming out this revealing one's soul. Don't be OCD in tradition just follow God's commandments. Pray to clear the mental cobwebs so good stuff can come out of one's mind. However, fasting as used today is great for the Body & soul for health reasons. It's like Faith and Works.
