Saint Rocco: One Who Is Already Dead Is Not Afraid of Death

St. Rocco, the great miracle worker of the 14th century, is often depicted as a pilgrim with a walking staff and seashell (the symbol of a pilgrim), with an open sore on his leg, an angel by his side, and a dog at his feet. He is the patron saint of dogs, dog owners, knee problems, surgeons, invalids, bachelors, diseased cattle and, of course, a saint to call on against cholera, plague, skin rashes, the Flu, Asthma, respiratory illnesses, contagious diseases, pestilence, and epidemics. St. Rocco endured his own passion, but it brought about his exaltation. He did not fear the plague. He did not fear abandonment or imprisonment. He did not even fear death itself because he was already dead. When you’re dead already…when the Old Adam is dead in you and the New Adam is risen and alive within…then an earthly death is not feared. Would that it could be said of each one of us here today: He is risen, he is not here. This man is no longer a slave to his passions. He is risen out of the grave of his chronic and habitual life of sin. Like St. Rocco, Christ lives in Him. He is not afraid of any plague or any contagion but that of sin. This man is not afraid to die, because he is already dead.

We call St. Rocco as "San Roque" here in the Philippines, and almost every towns in each cities have a chapel/parish dedicated to him. Since the beginning of this plague, our parish joins a number of parishes throughout the country in a continuous chain of novenas and processions in his honor. Fortunately, in my own observations, the towns under the jurisdiction of those parishes have significantly low number of COVID-19 cases compared to other cities. Viva San Roque!

Thanks for sharing this. I was recently baptized & confirmed. After much deliberation & prayer, I took St. Roch or Rocco as my patron saint. I pray I learn to embody his virtue & care more for others than myself. I have to wonder if his uncle truly didn't know him, or if he was worried the son of the former ruler would serve as a rallying point for the people in the civil war. Perhaps he was afraid Rocco had returned to claim his birthright.
