I had no idea the ideas put forth by Descartes (can trust only your mind, not your senses) and Hume (no such thing as a cause) had me me questioning my own sanity all this time, ever since they introduced those ideas to us in high school. Praise God for restoring to me the ability to consciously trust in my senses.

I luckily believed that our highschool teacher was joking. She explained everything so theatrically, and we have a national philosopher who is also quite overhyped and theatrical who had written our textbook. So all that I got from 120 hours of philosophy was that one should know how to take a theatrical pose where he doubts everything.

According to the records of his canonization, Thomas fell at once into a mystical sleep and had a vision. Two angels came to him from heaven and bound a cord around his waist, saying, “On God’s behalf, we gird you with the girdle of chastity, a girdle which no attack will ever destroy.” In the records of his canonization, many different witnesses who knew St. Thomas at different points in his life remarked about his evidently high degree of purity and chastity. The angels’ gift preserved St. Thomas from sexual temptation and bestowed upon him an enduring purity that ennobled all his thoughts and actions. Pope Pius XI wrote: “If St. Thomas had not been victorious when his chastity was in peril, it is very probable that the Church would never have had her Angelic Doctor.”

May St Thomas continue to protect Christ's church from the errors and heresies spouted by these proponents of so called "nouvelle theologie". Why fix what ain't broke?
@williambuysse54592 жыл бұрын
Very well presented. Although Machiavelli is the founder of modern philosophy and not Descartes. This does not change the anti-Thomistic animus. Also Husserlian phenomenology is a way to reconnect from within our modern experience with both Aristotle and Thomas philosophically. Philosophy has no past but our own experiences are very much historically conditioned. This is why for many Thomism feels, but is not, alien. It is also not likely, although this cannot be proven, that things would be any different today if Vatican II had never happened. Polemics within the faith are rarely helpful. It is important to also keep in mind that the Church has never had an official philosophy or theology and obviously never could. Thomism is presented as the best model of Theology. What I love most about St. Thomas is his being THE antidote against both Pride and Lust which both cause and perpetuate modernity. Thanks!!!!!

God commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply. Thus the conjugal act in marriage is good in that it is obedience to God. Also, to say something is not good in the act, only the effect sounds illogical. The act and effects are both good. If the act is not done the effect would be gone and we would be extinct.
@seriouscat22314 жыл бұрын
You are confused between good versus meritorious. It is good to eat so that I will not starve, but it is not meritorious in the same sense as prayer. I do not become more spiritual by eating. Neither by having more sex. The second issue was that in sharing God's creative power, the conception is what makes it so, not the conjugal act per se.
@darrelldw7134 жыл бұрын
Excellent talk. The great French philosopher (one can also call him a theologian) Etienne Gilson (1884-1978) had, I believe the correct interpretation of St Thomas in saying that all of the Summa Theologiae and even of the Summa Contra Gentiles is theology, and that what looks like philosophy is actually a philosophy that has been enlightened, transformed, elevated, and subsumed into theology, as at Cana water was turned to wine, as St Thomas says. Jesus modernized the Church and was rejected for it... Change is not always evil but can be Good.
@seriouscat22314 жыл бұрын
Modernism is the idea that there is no truth, but instead it is the current moment in time that determines what is true. Or, in other words, it says that truth is change and change is the only truth. Once you put truth above change, like any Christian, any person who knows his Bible should, your wordplay collapses and you could as well have said nothing.
