A second ballistics analyst, Olebile Edward Sereo, continued with his evidence in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial taking place at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
He underwent cross examination by Advocate Mnisi.
CMS was initially proposed in 1959 by Al Biasotti. In an analysis of 720 known nonmatch comparisons of land and groove impressions, he found no instances in which the CMS exceeded four. In 1997, Biasotti and John Murdock jointly published their paper titled “Conservative Quantitative Criteria for Identification” using the CMS criteria.

Good morning, family. Ratha and Baloyi are scared to call these additional analysts. In my opinion, Sereo testimony wasn't what they expected. Though he was evasive and lied to the core in support of Mangena. He couldn't defend all Mangena's wrongdoings because most of them were unprocedural. Hence now Ratha and Baloyi are skeptical about calling additional analysts. Hence, they were trying to manipulate the defense and submitt their affidavists in a scrupulous manner. Fortunately, the defense manages to defuse that. Another highlight of my day was Ratha's smile when Sereo mentioned Dave Pieterse, who once also brought exhibits from the Marikana massacre to the ballistic unit. Unfortunately, his excitement was short-lived. Because Dave's exhibits were in a locked container and registered at the reception office as required by ballistic rules and procedures...

Stereo did not add any value. He was misleading the court. The grooves and lands that he was explaining are class characteristics, it does only identifies the caliber of the gun. The individual characteristics are the striations that are unique to a specific firearm. You can't use lands and grooves to identify a specific firearm, they are used to identify the make of a gun
