Seonjajang (扇子匠) refers to an artisan who has mastered the skills to make traditional handheld fans called “buchae” in Korean. Korean traditional handheld fans are largely divided shape-wise into round-shaped fans and jeop-buchae, or foldable fans. One form of jeop-buchae is hapjukseon (合竹扇) known for its elaborate and refined aesthetics. From the Goryeo Dynasty, hapjukseon was widely known outside Korea as a fine piece of artwork incorporated with mother-of-pearl, metal, lacquer, and jade.
