I enjoyed your video. I am not at your high level of skill, but I worked with leather many years ago and have now re-ignited my interest. I became paralyzed from my chest down nine years ago, but my fingers, hands, arms, and eyes still work. This caused something amusing to happen to me regarding "right-handedness vs left-handedness". I can only back my wheelchair up close enough to the kitchen sink to wash dishes with my left hand. But I am right-handed. So, I learned to wash dishes with (almost) only my left hand. I have to tie the left side of my wheelchair to the bedframe with two large knots every time I get into bed, so that the wheelchair will not move away from the bed. I have to tie and untie those knots with my left hand. So, my left hand keeps having to learn to do my previously right-handed activities. This is the reason I began watching your video. Even though your video wasn't really about learning to use your left hand instead of your right hand, it was nice to listen to someone who has an interest in "directionality". :)

i love my left handed skiving knife (i am right handed) exactly because of the upside down skiving method (flat side up, bevel side down) you mentioned, more control and less likely to over cut. but because i use it upside down, the blade needs to be extra extra sharp to skive smoothly

저는 목공에서 처음 구두칼을 사용해서 가죽 배우면서 구두칼 사용하는걸 보고 좀 놀랐습니다. 어릴때 사용하던 조각도처럼 날 방향에 따라서 파고들거나 그 반대인 이유가 큰것 같습니다. 전 손피할빼곤 커터칼로 다 재단합니다. 도구는 자기 편한게 최고

회칼의 차이로 짐작되는 것이 있다면 보통 포를 뜰 때 칼의 궤적방향이 몸통 가까이에서 바깥쪽으로 칼을 밀어서 포를 뜨고 가죽칼 같은경우는 생육에 비해 피혁재단에 걸리는 저항이 높라 바깥에서 안쪽으로 당기는 방향성의 차이 때문에 날 위치가 다른게 아닐까 싶네욥🎉

Very interesting! I bought an $80 «right handed» Blanchard skiving knife (+ 25% import tax and shipping) and it’s the wrong way for me. I would have to grind the handle down in order to get it low enough to the table. I should have bought a left handed one for the way I want to use it. And also probably a much cheaper one as well. Expensive lesson. My reasoning was that I would buy one high end knife that would last me a lifetime, like my best kitchen knife that I bought 35 years ago and still use every day.

질문이 있습니다. 1. 사선, 역사선 피할칼 외에 끝이 둥근 피할칼이 있던데요 (반월도가 아니더라도요) 끝이 둥근 피할칼은 어디에 이점이 있을까요? 2. 구두칼로 피할이 되고, 피할칼로도 재단이 되어 보이는데 서로 달리 구분하여 부르는건 칼의 물성 탓 일까요? 3. 피할칼 연마시 연마 방수를 어떻게 가져가시는 지 궁금합니다. (어떤분은 천번, 어떤분은 2천번으로 해서 숫돌을 하나만 구비하고 싶은데 고민입니다)

1. 끝이 완전히 동그랗다기보다는, 약간의 곡선이 가미된 경우에는 피할하기 시작할 때 하나의 점에서 가죽과 칼이 맞닿아 들어가기에 더 수월하게 자를 수 있는 장점이 있습니다. 대부분 주방에서 쓰는 칼날 끝이 살짝 곡선인 이유도 이와 같습니다. 상대적으로 칼날 끝이 직선인 경우는 피할할 때 칼날 전체가 가죽과 맞닿다 보니 힘이 더 들어가게 됩니다. 다만, 끝이 곡선일 경우에는 직선인 경우에 비해서 피할하는 폭을 조절하는 데 유의해야하기에 각각은 장단점이 있습니다. 2. 흔히 아시는 구두칼과 영상으로 보신 피할칼은 결국 똑같습니다. 다만 써온 용어에 따라 다르다고 보시면 될 것 같고, 조그마한 각진 삽처럼 생긴 피할칼 보셨을 겁니다. 그 칼은 구두칼 스타일처럼 가장자리를 피할한다기보다는 가죽 전체를 손으로 얇게 해줄 때나, 가장자리가 아닌 안쪽 일정 부분을 피할할 수 있기에 용도에 따라 달리 생겼다고 보시면 됩니다. 3. 아래 영상 보셨을지 모르겠는데, 저는 양면 숫돌 사용하고 있습니다.(1000/6000방) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6SypYl9m62Gj7Msi=9mro-URuX50y9PFl
