When playing Wipeout XL circa winter 1997, I honestly thought Red Bull was a fictional in-universe sponsor created for the game (i.e. like Duff Beer in the Simpsons) until I visited England later that year and saw that Red Bull was a real life product that you could buy in stores. I think it took another year or so for Red Bull to be approved for sale in Canada due to the high caffeine content.

Fun fact: WipeOut 64 isn´t the first game in the franchise to feature analouge controls. That honor belongs to the first game. On the PS1 these games support the neGcon Controller (aka the twisty boi) giving you full analouge steering controls. The game feels very good using the neGcon and is IMO one of the best set of games to play with it.

As a child not even 10 years old I remember first playing Wipeout XL, seeing the Red Bull sponsorship and thinking "Man this game is so cool... One day I'm going to drink Red Bull" and I fulfilled that promise as a teenager lmao. What's super interesting is the design history of Wipeout, by The Designers Republic, who were responsible for the art direction and all the asset making of the games. There's a full Wipeout design book that's been released recently that's super cool too. I'm a bit of a nut though - I literally have one of the logos from Wipeout Fury tattooed because I love the design so much.

I think part of the reason for the decline in AGRs is that in the early 3D era, rendering wheels required a lot of polygons, so developers looked for ways to remove the wheels. I remember reading an interview with a Bullfrog developer working on Hi-Octane (their AGR title) and this was the reason he gave for making the game AGR rather than just a normal racing game.
@davidsentanu783613 сағат бұрын
That makes sense. But also, modern AGR games usually approach the aesthetics wrong. If you look at the OG F-Zero or the first 3 Wipeout games, they tend to feature realistic futuristic environment the best they could. There were grass, trees, soil, rocky hills, etc. Even wind and snow / ice. And now look at RedOut or Fast Racing Neo. Everything look slick and overly clean. Shiny metal surfaces, sci-fi lights, empty and sterile environtments. Mostly in a desert or any other simple boring places. I think they should approach the aesthetics like as if they are making a Gran Turismo or Asetto Corsa, only anti-gravity and without wheels. Just like what the video stated in the beginning, it should be F1 but beyond.

The viewer should take responsibility and do their own research and rely on their own decisions. You know how many times I watched sponsorships for RAID SHADOW LEGENDS or NordVPN? Hundreds. You know how many times I thought about getting either of those products? Zero, because I can use my own head to think for myself and treat these things exactly as they are.
