Separating Six Banana Plant Pups at the Corm, Potting, Mulching, Fertilizing, and more!
Taking the time to dig so that you can see the corm really pays off. Some were difficult to get at because they were so close to other pups, so I show how to see the corm and what to look for before separating.
one of the pups corm was attached to another corm, by doing it this way I was able to save and get both pups out safely.
after I place into pots, I mulch, water then fertilize using compost tea made out of Comfrey Bocking 14 mixed in with Tithonia Diversifolia / Mexican Sunflower this mixture has been working well on all my permaculture plants, including my Banana plants which seem to be growing like they are on Steriods :-)
The tool I used is a Bully Tools Steel Tamping and Digging Bar

It has been fun watching someone else work, I do like your banana videos. Have been living in Vietnam for several years and have 4 types of banana plants. Not a big place, but does the job. Some plants are very tall so I made a pole with blade. Usually carry a shovel, hacking blade, small pruning saw and scissors when I go into the groves. Everything at my place becomes compost. Will place a few earthworms into a rotting stump to speed up the process. Worms works great unless the toads, centipedes or scorpions get to them first. Thanks again for letting me watch someone else do all the work.

Best part of how to after showing the tools and what you were going to be doing starts at 29:34 where we can hear the cut best to 57:53 where you conclude the planting into pots and what you'll be doing as to water, mulch and compost tea. This was told 3 times and now I'll continue on toward what I hope is actuality of top dressing(s). Some of my comments/KZbin won't let me come back and amend/edit or it does allow a small amendment. I didn't want to lose where the best cuts were and the special cut towards the end and where spoke of water and top-dressings would occur, the first time. Very detailed sir and I like your explanation(s). I watched three other splice/cutting videos before coming to this - lengthy - video and you're the best of four explanations. I mean no offense; it just was too many 'suckers/shoots'. I am detailed orientated myself and I did watch all of it because I feared missing something different amongst the six. I'm glad I did because numbers 5 and 6 really heard and saw what 1-4 were missing and the cut where you could not cut straight down against the 'mother' plant due to the smaller baby having come straight out from the mother and the larger shoot/baby came from the side of the shoot feeding the smaller of the two shoots. I find myself having to be detailed toward the moment and cutting I was glad to of somewhat patiently waited for, lol. So, now (that said 😉) I will continue to watch where I stopped upon the second time of water, mulch and tea...

So, since I have all of my bananas in 15 gallon pots, and since we are about to head into "winter" here in Texas, and since all of my plants need to be trimmed, how can I use the cut-offs to fertilize my plants? I was wondering if I could use them to make "compost tea". Very helpful video.

Hi I never made compost tea out of them, but you could chop and drop around other frees, plants etc.

After you pot up the pups, do you bring the pots inside for winter? I am in Central Texas, and have to mulch up and winterize my bananas. I have some pups on my banana plants and we have been in a 2 month drought with temps 100+ since May. It’s been a challenge. Also, any that I have in really large pots should I place in the ground after this hot spell or leave in the 30 gallon pots and mulch up come November! I’m so excited 8b, Texas.

I do not have room inside so I just pile up chips around the pots and this seems to keep the corms from freezing.

@@TheFrugalHugelGardener Great! I’m in central Texas so my 8b may not be quite as temperate as where you are in winter. I planted to put bubble wrap coats around the mother plants and mulch high, but wasn’t sure about potting up the pups this fall, or leave them in ground. I’ll watch the forecast for winter here then make a decision by the end of October.

Great video. Thanks! I just received 3 pups that have been growing in their own pots and have planted them in the ground in SC. Some folks have said I should trim back to the stalk by cut and drop all leaves to promote root growth. It is September...any thoughts on when the best time to do this? They are about 3 feet tall with 5 or 6 leaves.

Hi you are approaching the cooler months (winter) you should not promote growth now, wait till last frost. if it Buds before winter then you have a cold spell that bud, blossoms or bananas will go bad. you want the plant to Banana plant after your last frost. and ripen before next winter.
@jfrylove

Thanks. So no trimming then? Or shall I trim down? I think likelihood of budding is pretty low...they are only 3 feet tall.@@TheFrugalHugelGardener

What does your compost tea consist of ?Im in southern Missouri and my banana tree is about 2 to 3 years old I think. It is a hardy variety and is growing very well near the corner of front porch, in a south east corner , away from north winds. It has about 4 to 5 pups, separated 2 pups to give to friends. The trunk is getting pretty big in circumference and has many big beautiful leaves. I don’t really claim to have a green thumb but I’m very proud of it. I have never fertilized it. Will it ever get blooms and then bananas ?

@TheFrugalHugelGardener

lol, just that, you chop the plant and drop it in place so that it breaks down into the soil to add nutrients back into the earth.

when making a video I like to show people the proper way of doing it so that they get the full corm and all the roots. note: I also just use a shovel but that does not always get the full corm and all the roots and could also damage the parent plants corm and leave it open for rot. Thanks for your input.
