I definitely agree that separating the art from the artist is personal preference, but only when it comes to books you read for your own enjoyment. Professors should almost always put aside their personal feelings about an author and focus on the work itself, i.e. if you taught Cormac McCarthy for 10 years then this situation shouldn't change anything. It would be a shame for a group of students to miss out on his works just because their professor felt a way about him. When it comes to what Cormac actually did, I think it's sad and pathetic how a large portion of people are trying to frame it as some pedophilic abuse story. Augusta Britt had the courage to come out and tell an incredibly personal and heart wrenching story about someone she loved; someone who quite literally saved her from the darkest moments of her life, was there to help her her entire life, and who she continued to have an incredibly close relationship with even as she grew older and wiser. Yet all of this is forgotten and thrown in the trash just because of a huge age gap. Cormac definitely should not have had sex with her, he probably was a weirdo, but at the same time that shouldn't define their entire relationship, or Cormac's entire character.

McCarthy was not a bad person from what I can tell. He did an inappropriate thing. And that is a huge distinction. Fortunately, the situation turned out to be a positive thing. But he didn't know it would turn out that way then. Dumb luck. He shouldn't have allowed himself to fall in love with a girl. McCarthy is dead. His works are brilliant. So, I move on. If he were alive, I'd have to think about it.

I find the story of Augusta and Cormac to be amazingly fascinating and a testimony of Love. They wanted to be together yet they couldn’t and although the age gap seems inappropriate, I think it’s good to keep in mind that they both wanted to be together and they supported, needed and loved each other. That is very different from someone taking advantage of underaged girls. She didn’t know he was married, he wanted eventually to marry her and that didn’t happen, yet they never stopped loving each other. See it in the context of their story, I think there we have a true love story in my opinion. By the way I agree with you Nate but I do think that Cormac and Augusta slept together after they had spent a year together and had developed a strong emotional bond already. Also, In my opinion there a difference when it comes to multiple sexual allegations and child abuse stories opposed to a single event, that is in the case of Mccarthy. He didn’t abuse or take advantage of Augusta, she was a big part of his life. That’s my take on it. Blessings 😊

It's interesting that you brought up a quote from Orwell. Irony. Orwell was a horrendous bigot, but I still revere his writing. Because it's brilliant.

I think it would be hard to write something like Sandman without being evil on some level. I have stopped reading it because there was something that felt fundamentally wrong about it (and I have enjoyed Blood Meridian). I think to write like Cormac McCarthy one needs to be open to experience to the point of lacking common sense.

The only way to truly read fiction is to not give a flying f about the artist. People who say otherwise are simply illeducated.

I find it odd how you can remember the entire story and add quotes but fail to mention it was 1976 when the age of consent was 15. If abiding by laws that are now outdated but weren't at the time is a huge moral issue for you, then by all means, separate the art from the artist. But to call him a rapist is incredibly stupid. For a person who reads so much, you would think your media literacy would be much higher, and you could tell the article was clearly written in Cormac's favor and is meant to be read as heartwarming, but I guess not. By the way, the librarian called and wants her glasses back, but she said you could keep the ugly Wu-Tang shirt.

I don't understand what your post is about because the video literally does not use the word rape at all. and it definitely isn't trying to paint McCarthy in some reductive light if I missed any inclusion. Also you're argument that the age of consent laws weren't outdated in 1976 is a bit presumptive. For example, CA's has been 18 since 1913. Also the fact that the government pushed to stop child marriages in the 1930s. Pretty sure it was weird to sleep with a 15 yo when you're 40 pretty much during the whole 20th century regardless of the legality. idk why you're getting this pressed about it anyway.

librarian called and wants her glasses back 😂 you funny bro. i don't think you watched the video though. my whole point was that this woman has profound love for McCarthy and that she attributes him to saving her life. do not tarnish the big nate name for naught. also you know this wu tang shirt is goated.

Art from the artist. The man was a great writer. Made some questionable choices but he was from a different era.

Even in his era he was controversial Don't be a coward. He was a POS but we both dig his fiction. Don't try to cultivate some BS narrative. Read non fiction if your goal is increasing your personal morals. Fiction is mostly created by anti social scum and I wouldn't change a thing. That's art.
