As a French people, it was really helpful to understand all the subtilities of the USA government, especially all the stuff around checks & balances. Due to a system that is a little different in my country, I have some difficulties to understant the way elections and ruling are working in the USA, but there it was really clear and pretty well-explained ! Thanks a lot ! :D

In my opinion, separation of powers as well as checks and balances are some of humanities greatest inventions. They provide stable government while taking the shortcomings of human nature into account.
@jacfalcon

You earned a lot of my respect by both speaking neutrally and open-endedly about if we need checks and balances, but also admitting your personal view that we do. It's hard not to based on any understanding of history, but it's wise to still encourage people to think and research for themselves. Awesome.

This will be used in my Government classroom when I teach Checks and Balances. There's a lot to talk about here, thank you for giving a crash course on this topic! Actually, the fourth branch of government is technically "public administration," which counts for the various federal government agencies and departments that don't fall under the three official branches of the federal government. I do agree with you on what you are saying though. Campaign contributors are truly our fifth branch.

As an outsider observing the United States, I'd say the theory and implementation of these ideas are pretty astounding. Congress may seem to be a necrotic house of sycophants now, the executive depending on your allegiances, a weak duckling or a tyrant, leaving the only viable motion of government to the courts (so much of American policy seems to be settled in the Supreme Court these days, as if it is the only power still somewhat functioning), but in the context of 18th century European despotism, it seems like the most enlightened form of government that man has ever created. The Founders may not have seen every pitfall, but they had enough foresight to catch a lot of things before they spiraled. I feel like the Title of Nobility Clause needs to be re-invoked more in light of the recent trend of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama-Clinton/Bush, is this pattern not alarming to anyone else?

Honestly I think Craig is like AT LEAST 30 times funnier than John Green. I don't have anything against John Green, but this series makes me literally giggle out loud. At 5:45 when he was like "Perk of the job... it's a perk of the job!" the humor was so perfectly delivered and nuanced. And then a few seconds later with "SUPER important case... look it up. Look it up." Hahahaha! Craig's comic sensibilities are just... ~kisses own fingertips then slightly opens hand in a stereotypical "bellissimo" gesture~

I have been watching so many crash course videos as a means to replace my mediocre underfunded public school education... now I am at the point where I am becoming skeptical of the series entirely and my college education. So why should I put faith into this KZbin Channel as a reliable source of information?
@pqxh
@pqxh 8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Merryman You shouldn't. Skepticism is necessary for an intelligent society. We should never let ourselves believe things without sufficient evidence. Believing without sufficient evidence can be dangerous (see the anti-vaccination movement, which has led to small breakouts of deadly diseases). But of course life is a balance between trusting sources like these and investigating things ourselves. If I investigated everything myself I'd spend all my time investigating and no time living. The world is too complex for every person to investigate the direct evidence behind everything they consider to be probably true. But luckily there are ways to be confident that something is true without doing all the investigation directly all of the time. We can sometimes find systems wherein not everyone does all the investigation, but due to the way we built the system we can pretty well trust those who do. One of those ways of making sure we can trust them is by stepping in occasionally at random times and doing our own investigation and comparing with their results, like when the FDA randomly inspects restaurants for food safety. That gives restaurants incentive not to cheat or make errors, because at any random time their shortcomings could be discovered.

It might have been mentioned elsewhere but another balance the Courts have is that they are "For Life". Unlike Congress or the President, they don't need to worry about reelection. Look at the long term power a Judge on the Supreme Court have and they don't have to answer to the electorate directly. How many Congressmen and women would love to have that?

Given how terribly gridlocked Congress is one might reasonably expect such a lack of productivity to come from an overzealous application of these checks and balances; but in fact, it is rarely the case that anything even makes it as far as the President's desk. Congress is so dysfunctional it doesn't need checks and balances to constrain its power. It does that all on its own.
@MikkyMcdrunk
@MikkyMcdrunk 9 жыл бұрын
Which is actually the point of how congress was created. The founders wanted a congress that stepped on itself this much. I tend to agree with their decision. A congress that has trouble getting things done rapidly is going to have a large problem with passing laws based on the flavor of the week, or a current irrational fear that just became apparent this week. It makes any decision they make have to be so overwhelming that the vast majority of the american people would be willing to except it. In this way they stop say a bill banning Muslims from entering the country after a bombing.
@charleslarue792
@charleslarue792 9 жыл бұрын
ShoutingCoffee True, but a congress also needs to be effective enough to pass the bills that are required. In my opinion, the current congress has displayed no ability to be able to pass the laws that necessary for governing this country.
@MikkyMcdrunk
@MikkyMcdrunk 9 жыл бұрын
I think the bills that are required sentiment is some what objective. Let me give an example, and feel free to not agree with me, hell I openly admit I don't agree with even what i think up in my on mind most of the time. Consider the minimum wage raise to 15 bucks an hour. What damage would that have done to everyone that had strived to reach 15 bucks an hour? Do you think industries would change their pay over night? Or would a large amount of people have been fired over night to compensate for this radical change. What i am putting forward is that congress is so slow as to allow the populous to adjust and change in anticipation of the elected morons.
@AvielMenter
@AvielMenter 9 жыл бұрын
There is no evidence that Congress has had a problem of operating too quickly but plenty of evidence that Congress has been operating way way way way too inefficiently. This isn't even due to the design of the founders; it's due to a systemic failure of the election system.

I thought that James Madison wrote 29 essays, John jay got sick after 5 and Hamilton wrote the other fifty one of the federalist papers. I guess I shouldn't depend on musicals to learn about u.s. History
@hopestarr1008
@hopestarr1008 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, it is true that John Jay wrote 5, James Madison wrote 29, and Alexander Hamilton wrote the other 51 as Lin Manuel Miranda penned in his amazing new production of Hamilton. You see, John Jay Wrote papers 2-5, and 64, a total of 5. James Madison wrote papers 10, 14, 18-20, 37-58, and 62-63, a total of 29. And Alexander Hamilton wrote papers 1, 6-9, 11-13, 15-17, 21-36, 59-61, and 65-85, a total of 51. 5+29+51=85. So, while relying on Musicals for your history education is an extremely bad idea and not recommended, you can generally trust Lin. In interviews he has said that he tried to keep the story as historically accurate as possible, which is quite amazing for a hip hop and rap musical about our founding fathers! :)

As an attempt at constructive criticism. I want to say I enjoy this show so far and I find you as an energetic and entertaining host, but I find your attempt at humor alittle too coarse. It's not wrong to try to be funny, but I personally feel you are trying too hard. Other than that great job so far and keep the good work. I look forward to more episodes. Hopefully ones with smoother humor lol.

Don't elevate their ideals higher than they actually were. The founders were only concerned about protecting the rights and interests of rich landowners. All of the founders were rich landowners btw.

So I love that you are doing cc Government, and I like Craig, but I really don't like the sarcastic silly voices he does when reading documents (ie the constitution). I think it is awesome that Craig makes the show funny and entertaining, but i personally think it sounds like he is mocking whatever he is reading, which takes away from the points that are being made. Let it be known however that I still love the show, and can't wait for more! (Especially looking forward to possible episodes on important supreme court cases and general videos about the judicial branch) (EDIT: I should also mention that I love the voices in every other instance! Just not when he is quoting something else!)

Doing a Progressive Tax on (Just) the “Greedy Part” of Wealth & Conservatively Spending (Just it) on Social Programs gets us a “Stable Society” (the “True Creator” of All Wealth!!) AND we do it with “Direct Democracy” where WE Directly Propose, Enact & Enforce “Merit Based Standardized” Laws & “Money” isn’t a factor!! - "Like" this so we all See & Do this!!
@balancedstereo
@balancedstereo 5 жыл бұрын
PS: Nobody’s taking away our “25 Rolls Royce’s” but WE MORALLY OWE (Just our “Greedy” 26th Rolls & up) BACK TO OUR STABLE SOCIETY (that “Owns & Allows” us to Create & Safely use our “25 Rolls”) TO KEEP IT STABLE!! We must Realize Nobody gets Rich without our “Fast Food Workers” who ironically Need “Food Stamps” for Stability!! No one is lazy & “Reaping Free Benefits off the Rich’s Money” because the GREEDY PART BELONGS to all of us!! Read Max Weber’s “Protestant Ethic & SPIRIT of Capitalism” where, early on, Wealth was only a Moral pursuit just to achieve our limited “State of Grace” & then we stopped so others could also achieve their monetary “Salvation” Watch “The Gods Must Be Crazy” where a “Coke bottle” falls from a plane into the midst of a primitive tribe & one guy grabs it & everyone fears him for grabbing ALL the “Money” & now being their “King”!! In "Direct Democracy" we vote directly for issues that we've tested for merit, etc before proposal, then we popularly enact them & then Voter Volunteers will easily enforce small & specific Laws that have all the "legal standards" for enforcement in them ... congress, senate, president, agencies, courts, etc have a role to play, but within it & in service to it ...

Courts have the most power. They make decisions based on precedent...and is a good "cop-out" if they don't really want to make his or her own decision...this is of course if the trial is not by jury.

"The constitution is the guide which I never will Abandon." President George Washington "Power corrupts and Absolute power corrupts absolutely." Lord Action Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellers there is safety. Proverbs 24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellers there is safety. Ecclesiastes 7:12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. Proverbs 4: 7Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. 8Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. 9She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

I am interested in this series and would very much love for it to be a success. However, the horrible voices are distracting, unnecessary and way, way over the top. Please tone down some of the more silly aspects, but please still stick to the fun crash course model. Kind regards.
