In 1882 much of Kingston, Jamaica, was burnt to the ground in a great fire. Starting at a lumber yard, many of the island's records were destroyed in 'Feurtado’s Fire'.
Stephen Delgado Porter literally wrote the book on Jamaican Jewish genealogy. This week on Sephardic World he will discuss surviving records from which much of the genealogy can be reconstructed.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, resident in London. He has both Sephardic and Ashkenazi ancestry. His book, Jamaican records: a two-part guide to genealogical and historical research, using repositories in Jamaica and England, published in 1999 opened up the field of Jewish genealogy in Jamaica. As well as being a supporter of Sephardic World, Steven is a member of the Society of Genealogists, the Caribbean Family History Group, and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain.
