Sir Moses Montefiore

Sir Moses Montefiore (1784-1885) was an Italian-born British financier and philanthropist. He was one of the most significant Jews of his generation, defending his co-religionists from assault in Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Morocco and elsewhere. A champion of orthodox against Reform Judaism, he also encouraged the British Sephardic and Ashkenazim to integrate with each other. He was a pioneer of Jewish re-settlement in Eretz Israel.
