I see some comments questioning the craftsmanship of the blade. It is forged fine as a decoration, but as others point out it does not actually preform well in combat or test combat. The problem is that it is simply too big to ever function or swing without it flopping like crazy regardless of the method used to forge it. Any technique (as far as I know) or metal used would either result in a sword that is too brittle and would only last for a few hits before snapping/shattering, a sword that would bend under its own weight (like this one) and flop all over the place, or a sword that is simply too heavy to swing like the buster sword. Arguably the best forging of the sword would be the heavy version, if you look at the game images it is actually a fairly thick sword and does not flop at all (even though a thicker blade would still flop a bit, this is just an animation thing). In all circumstances Masamune is just not a feasible sword design to begin with.
@UndyingZombie
@UndyingZombie 10 жыл бұрын
"too big to function" no, not true. It all depends on the material used and how you forge it. What they used is great and all, but it comes with some problems. Does not help that people keep thinking Sephiroth's sword is a katana when its not. ( psst, its an ōdachi )
@theMedievalBadass
@theMedievalBadass 10 жыл бұрын
Forging methods don't effect performance, heat treatment and steel type do. Besides, forging is pretty much universal when you get to the basics(disregarding pattern welding and such). Also, if the sword did have a traditional Japanese style differential heat treat, it would have just stayed bent on the spine and the edge would crack/chip after the first swing.
@NoodleWilll
@NoodleWilll 10 жыл бұрын
theMedievalBadass I actually think captainTrips is right here. After researching what the hell an odachi was, It appears that there were historical examples of swords of this length- an average one being at 65-70 inches. The name literally translates to "big sword". i don't know a huge amount about heat treatment and forging and the like, but since this thing was commonly used at a certain point in history, I think it should be possible to create one that does work, and works well. It also, I guess depends on how it is used. Ie, downward strikes instead of horizontal, like the ones in this demonstration. Sorry for the huge wall of text, and l think you could learn a lot more through your own research, as I am just regurgitating stuff I looked up lol.

strangely enough, if you hack in sephiroth into your party for the endgame dungeon, the masamune's damage output does diminish. while it is his ultimate weapon, noting how it has zero materia growth, i cannot begin to imagine why that's even hardcoded there. not much reason to it to have any latent abilities.
@locke103
@locke103 4 жыл бұрын
@marcus24000 it takes a few rounds for the damage to drop. and that fight is hard coded for Cloud to counter if struck. Awfully amusing if you hack in Aerith and she gets struck and killed. That brought about more questions I was curious about over the years too.

It was all "I do this" and "I do that." Now he makes jokes, he explains what exactly the things he's doing mean and why they matter. He's also talking more about the actual weapons and not just the processes he uses to make them.

+Felix Scerri for it to bend like that means It's useless in battle. Japanese steel blades are folded steel so that, even at long lengths, the crystals are aligned to make the body and edge rigid. Then it has a soft iron core to absorb the shock, so that the blade doesn't crumble after it hits something. The sword they have would break or warp if it hit a solid object once. Cool looking, but a cheap imitation.
@Justin_Ebright
@Justin_Ebright 8 жыл бұрын
Yes that's all true, but the fact of the matter is to do all the work that goes into a traditional Japanese blade would have taken them months on a sword this size with a modern forge working it all day. Keeping this much steel at temperature for what they did is already amazing, if you had to work with the folding of 7 foot of tamahagane, not knowing if all of your material falls into the 1/3 category of being strong enough to make sword blades, and keeping temperature up so the blade doesn't cool and harden in different ways throughout the blade. If you got all of that, then you'd have to add the hada, which also needs to be spaced accordingly and heated right to maintain the difference in temper between spine and blade. I'm sure if you were PAYING him to make a sword like that he'd put that much time into it, cause let's face it, it'd be over $10K just in work alone. This wasn't done in that manner, this was done just to make the thing.

For all the un noligable viewers saying "it's to wobbly" and "usless sword it's unbalance" it's impossible to make a 7ft sword let alone a katana an already thin blade that big and not wobble. It's simple physics man
@jarrodw6438
@jarrodw6438 8 жыл бұрын
+Hermit VII Yes, there will always be SOME wobble. However, if they'd done a proper job forging it, it would have much less of one. The higher the layer count, the more rigid the blade will become, enabling it to be more effective. At this point though, that Katana isn't even fit to go against paper armor.
@hermitvii5757
@hermitvii5757 8 жыл бұрын
Tru, I think it might be the way it was forged. If I recall in past Japan when katanas odachi ect were made the metal was "folded" in a sence. If they woulda made it thicker then it coulda lasted probelly but just wouldent look the same. Eh it look cool atleast so still a win to me :D
@jarrodw6438
@jarrodw6438 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, it would have looked identical. The folding process does indeed add layers, but the process also pushes the excess material out to the sides when you do it. So you end up with super-thin layers, all the way through. Furthermore, the process of folding and "Hot Cutting" the blade allows for the distribution of carbon throughout the steel, making for a more homogeneous blade. This gives it both flexibility, and strength, and enables it to stand up to actual combat.

This nicely summarizes why I like the Reforged stuff better than the original series stuff. 1. The reforged crew legitimately seems interested not only in their work but in the source material. 2. Everyone on the crew is actually credited in the episode (rather than just buried in the description) for the work they're doing. In this episode, he mentions Brian once, and everything else is just 'we'. 3. Its a big floppy piece of steel that was roughly power-hammered out of an already mostly-to-size-and-shape bar. Ilya would have layer-stacked, given it a kawagani/shingani construction, etc. that would actually stand up to use.
@protonpack-a-punched1662
@protonpack-a-punched1662 8 жыл бұрын
you need to layer stack the damn metal to flush out any impurities like dirt and coal etc. the metal he used was already perfectly consolidated. in fact its better to use metal like that instead of using Bloom which takes so long to finally turn into a good metal for katana. not to mention the risk of having it decarb. yeah the old tradition is great. but just use metal thats ready to use to save hassle.

and look at the description. everyone is credited. everyone.
@Foxpawed
@Foxpawed 8 жыл бұрын
Giving them a footnote in the description is hardly the same thing as crediting them in the actual video. Yeah, they don't tend to fold their material when they're working with something like a big chunk of railroad tie or whatnot. But they still noticeably craft their blades rather than just refining a cut-out, with the exception of when they precision cut out something intricate on the CNC. Both take skill, but one is more impressive and makes for a better _show_.
@AmazingPotatoFarmer
@AmazingPotatoFarmer 8 жыл бұрын
+Wesley Foxx You do know that the main reason that the quality is higher for the Reforged stuff is due to the increased budget, lower time restraints and increased crew size, right? Tony was working under extremely tight time constraints with a smaller crew, so it's understandable that there will be weapons that don't get the treatment they deserve. I mean, they had more projects to complete than they had days to complete them in.

Im pretty sure it's gonna be the first time you will have the challenge of combining a revolver and a sword! But don't make it to fire bullets just make it sharp and functional! Everyone saying the sword bends. No shit. Regular sized swords bend on impact what do you thinks going to happed to a six to seven foot long blade that is virtually the same thickness all the way down. Its physics people take a tape measure measure about 30," which is standard katana blade length and its perfectly straight extend to six or seven foot and the thing bends under the weight of material at the far end. Physics and engineering....not that hard to comprehend
