'The chorus refrain, "Annie, are you OK?" in Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" was inspired by CPR doll Resusci Anne. A dummy used to teach people how to properly perform CPR. Trainees learn to say, "Annie, are you OK?" while practicing CPR on the dummy.'

I got goosebumps when MJ did his iconic “Lean” Truly The Greatest Music Artist To Ever Live The King Of Music Forever Michael Joseph Jackson!🤩🙌🏽👑💙💕💫(And some folks mention you can’t understand what he’s saying it’s cause MJ had different styles of singing this vocal style is called “Staccato” singing within short phrases etc. Btw this Short Film/Music Video is like someone with OCD’s dream lol MJ was super smooth,no matter what generation you’re from MJ’s music is timeless and expands across generations and MJ is very versatile the most versatile Music Artist tbh he’s done World Music,Pop,R&B,Hip Hop,Disco,Funk,Soul,Heavy Metal,Rock,Country,DubStep,Opera etc. he’s phenomenal and dominated the music industry from Childhood To Adulthood had his first Number 1 Hit song as a 14 Year Old child with “Ben” and sold over 100 Million copies before even having a solo career as the lead singer of the Jackson 5 nobody will ever surpass this man he truly was/is a savant true genius)

Smooth Criminal is one of my all time favorite MJ songs. The visuals that accompany it are EXTRAORDINARY!! I loove the whole 1920’s vibe with the men in zoot suits and the women in flapper dresses. The setting was in a speakeasy kind of club and I just love how they bring this all together along with the most amazing choreography. By the way, I think I found out how MJ moonwalks. In a concert video he was on his knees and I noticed that the soles of his shoes were suede, much like the soles of a dancer’s shoe. Btw Seph, you make me smile when you get so into the bangers. 😁
@carn9507
@carn9507 Жыл бұрын
Thing is, you can moonwalk in almost any shoe on almost any surface if you practice it well enough, because the sliding foot doesn't rest fully on the floor, your weight is all on the foot with the raised heel then switches over as the feet change position and angle. Mike may have used suede soles to make it easier and smoother on stage but yeah he could do the moonwalk almost anytime anywhere.

I think the slow middle part is supposed to be a dreamlike interlude where Michael wanted everyone to improvise. This is a very awesome choice in a popular music video: He gave the dancers and himself a space to improvise and just act out emotions and charge energy. Still blows my mind 😃There is some footage about making the film where Michael talks about this "dream sequence".

I grew up on that man, buying the first single I ever purchased at 8 years old , it was “Rockin Robin”. He was, In my opinion, the greatest entertainer to ever live. Michael loved old Hollywood musicals, and many of his short films reflect that. Even this masterpiece is inspired by a musical starring one of his idols, Fred Astaire.

The move in smooth criminal were he does the lean is called “the lean” he even does that in his concerts as well by making magnet shoes. underneath the stage there is a nail sticking out of the stage and the U shape heel of micheals shoes clicks into the nail into the magnet that’s inside the U shaped heel of the shoes and then he leans and never falls over. Well….he failed the lean a couple times on one of his concert tours

The song opens with an eerie heartbeat, which alludes to the core refrain of the song. The lyrics jump right in to describe the scene of a crime; a woman being attacked in her apartment by this allusive “smooth criminal.” The upbeat tempo and strong beat don’t seem to match the difficult subject matter, but they capture the frantic energy of attempting to help a victim of a violent crime. As he came into the window / Was a sound of a crescendo / He came into her apartment / He left the bloodstains on the carpet / She ran underneath the table / He could see she was unable / So she ran into the bedroom / She was struck down, it was her doom Jackson’s familiar refrain of “Annie, are you OK?” carries more meaning than just the narrator asking a question. The line is inspired by Resusci Anne, the name of the model of doll used to teach CPR. Jackson combined the question trainees learn to ask, “are you OK?” with the name of the doll to create the iconic line. The second verse moves on from the occurrence of the crime to the discovery of the victim, as neighbors or medics attempt to resuscitate the victim, seemingly to no avail. Here, we once again see the connection to the heartbeat that opened the song and the CPR doll, Resusci Anne, in the lyrics. So they came into the outway / It was Sunday, what a black day / Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation / Sounding heartbeats, intimidations.

This could be wrong, but I always heard this was partly inspired by a serial killer here in the states named Richard Ramirez, more commonly known as the Night Stalker. He would break into houses and just leave as gruesome a scene as he could. A terrifying time to live in California. As for the lean, it's in the shoes. The shoes have a hollow triangle shaped heel that catch onto a nail in the floor. Still, you have to have a shit ton of core strength to accomplish it as perfectly as MJ does (his dancers, as well).

It's apparently done with wires here (you can just about make one out if you look close on the left of the head of the bottom left guy on the actual video, too hard to see here with the transparent effect) for the live version Mike wanted to be able to recreate it on stage in front of the audience with no cuts and so invented those shoes that connect onto the posts that raise up from the stage at the right moment and lock into holes in the heels so they can do the lean, then the posts retract and unlock the shoes so they can continue the rest of the dance routine. He patented the locking system too. He and his dancers still need incredible core and leg strength to do the lean on stage as there is obviously no support for their body other than their own muscles. And they leaned far further in the live performances than even here in the original video. :)

YEESSSS!🔥 Please read everything i wrote in this comment! This is my ALL TIME FAVOURITE Michael's song and music video/short film! Its considered his best short film by a lot of people in the MJ community and probably one of the best music videos of all time! Its wayyy better than Thriller! Ahhhh I looovedd your reaction! I've been waiting for this for months hahah. Smooth Criminal was written and composed by Michael along with Quincy Jones. The song became one of the most iconic tracks of Michael's career. It features distinctive sound with a catchy beat, a prominent bassline and the iconic "Annie, are you OK?". The lyrics of the song tell the story of a mysterious murder and a cry for help from Annie. The protagonist seeks to uncover the truth behind the incident. The music video is renowned for its distinctive choreography, one of my absolute favourites! This was the video where dance moves like the standing moonwalk (7:55), the circle glide (14:44) and his iconic tap dance (16:02) were introduced. About the lean, this is one of his most iconic dance moves ever, just like the moonwalk. If you dont want to know how it was done, im not gonna tell you. The lean is the reason why I made you close your eyes in the Beyonce tribute video, imagine if you got spoiled for this too before watching the music video like the moonwalk haha. Cant wait for you to watch the live performances of this song lool, they will blow your mind hahah. Michael's white suit was created as usual by his stylist, Michael Bush. Its one of Michael's most iconic dresses, you will see in the live performances. This was directed by Colin Chilvers. Another thing, the music video was inspired by Fred Astaire's films and their stylized dance movements. Michael was a great admirer of Fred, he is one of his biggest inspirations. Smooth Criminal has become one of Michael's most recognizable songs and it also inspired numerous tributes and covers by other artists. Seph you can't understand how excited I was while watching this reaction haha. Im gonna write another comment i think tomorrow about another argument, i'll make you notice some important things. Smooth Criminal 😍 you should check out when you can the acapella version of this song, the harmonies between Michael are beautiful and very clear, also you can hear Michael snapping his fingers and clapping and stumping his feet haha, sounds like he was having a lot of fun, he does that also with Billie Jean and others, I really like to listen to these cause it's so raw, feels like you're actually in the studio with him 😂❤

Oh, lil bit of extra trivia. The version of Smooth Criminal in this film (and the long version music video release) has an EXTRA couple of lines of lyrics NOT in the actual audio versions of the song. After Mike blows the cue ball dust into the face of that guy and starts walking up the stairs: "So they came into the outway It was Sunday, what a black day Every time I thought I'd find him He's leaving no clues left behind him And he had no way of knowing Of the suspect or what to expect Mouth to mouth resuscitation Sounding heartbeats intimidations" The released song is missing those middle four lines so the verse is cut by half and goes: "So they came into the outway It was Sunday, what a black day Mouth to mouth resuscitation Sounding heartbeats intimidations" No idea why cos I love those extra lines and how he delivers them. They exist in the audio multi-tracks that became available and fans have used to make their own cool remixes (such as those by youtuber SingleWhiteGlove). But I haven't found any reason why Mike (or Quincy or whoever) cut them from the final song. The multitracks for all of his songs that they are available for are awesome to listen to as well as you can isolate each element that makes up the songs and hear lil bits that you may never have even noticed in the full song. :)

I love to see your reaction on this one especially. I was 8 years old when I saw it (1988) and my mouth was open all the video long. I could not believe how someone can be so great. His singing and his dancing.. unbelievable. Regarding the lean I know how they did it but I won´t tell. It´s part of MJ´s magic. Also regarding the middle part I have a theory. When the kids went to this club no one was there. When MJ came in this place came to life. As long as he sings the people there live. When he stops to sing the people disappear or die. That´s why they start to sing the chorus again to make him sing again so that they can live. Without the music they cannot live.. that´s my theory :)

I invite you to discover this wonderful talented young singer. This angel is one of the best singers (incredible extremely low vocal, dramatic contralto + polyphonic voice) in the world! Diana Ankudinova I was stunned to find that the first performance (Show "You are Super") I heard was when she was 14!!!! She's now 20 and still developing. She sings in Russian, French, English, German, Spanish and Arabic. The covers she performed on that show are very popular on KZbin. Many KZbinrs publish reactions on these performances, which include "California Dreamin' " , "Sweet Dreams" (all 19 y.o.), "Can't Help Falling In Love", "Crow", "Personal Jesus" (all 18 y.o.), "Wicked Game", "Human" (15 y.o.), "Derniere Danse", "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" (14 y.o.), "Take On Me" (17 y.o.) and others.

Im sure its been answered, but just in case, that lean they all do, basically they had the backs of their shoes fitted with a little bit of metal sticking out from the back that they would slip into the gaps made in the floor, they would hook them in place and then lean 🎉. Then they just slightly move their feet and the shoes slip out of the floor slots. Although thats how they done it live, in a video like this they could use anything. I believe once it malfunctioned live and soneone fell, might even be on KZbin 🤔

The greatest reaction ever seph❤ Welcome to smooth criminal,friend This is the most creative music video of Bad 🔥🔥🔥🔥 1st of all the lyrics was "as he came into the window It was the sound of a crescendo He came into her apartment He left the bloodstains on the carpet She ran underneath the table He could see she was unable So she ran into the bedroom She was struck down It was her doom" Here u are the faaaaacts 🔥🔥: 1)The design of the clothing was inspired by Michael. He thought that the song would suit the 30s very well because he was also very influenced by it.For your information, this was the first time Michael wore the famous arm band🌹🌹.. 2) If you pay close attention to the beginning of the song, the mini version specifically, you will hear a beat-like rhythm at the beginning of the song, of course, to create the illusion of mystery and fear that the song needs, but this is not like beats. It is actually Michael Jackson’s heartbeats 🩺🩺 (When I hear it, I have to get goosebumps, and I don’t know why)... . 3)one of the most enjoyable things about it is that every meter in the location was exploited in a fantastic theatrical and artistic way, in addition to using more than one type of dancing, very smoothly, in indescribable harmony✨✨ 4)About half way through the song, the music started to stop completely and you started to hear the voices of the dancers themselves. This part was about 30 seconds long, and when Michael was asked about it, he said that the dancers had worked for many days and it was important to make them feel the song. 5)We come to the famous lean: u are soooo good in maths btw the lean was 45 degree .The technique of lean in the short film is not known 🫣 but one of Michael’s assistants will write it in his book soon( another friend here say that it was already written but i have no idea though ) but Michael wanted it more than just in the music video 😊😊😉 6)If you focus on the song, there is something very genius in my opinion, which is that one sentence is said more than 15 times with a different melody each time which is 'annie are u ok' ❤️❤️❤️ 7) and the famous question 'who is annie ?' I don't know should i tell u or i would spoil the documentary. I know the full story, u tell me what do u think 😊😊? I hope u enjoy them ❤❤

the name of the step is the lean, the step that mj created and there is a trick using a type of hook on the floor that fits into a space on the sole of the shoe, and it was patented by michael, and he does it live, it's very difficult because it requires a lot of strength in the legs to support the inclined body, and in live shows he has already tilted much more than in the video, and he has also fallen 😅

By the way seph , as u now know the technique of the lean so i want tell u that I can't use the same technique and be ok which maintains the magic of Michael 😊because there are research about this lean by doctors and they said the person who performs this thing must have a very very strong ankle tendon as during this trick the whole body weight depends on it not his feet any more ✨so if a normal person did that thing , he would tear his ankle tendon. Even the impersonators today don't lean the same angle as even Michael went to 30 degree not even 45 which proves that he is very a very strong performer and he is magic so don't be sad 🌹🌹

For this performance it was 'strings' wires. If you watch the actual video so you can see the footage more clearly you can make out a wire on the bottom left guy, to the left of his head as he leans. For the live shows, Mike devised the shoe locking system which still required immense strength of him and his dancers to lean forwards all straight and bring themselves back up again purely by their leg and core muscles. :)
