I want a clarification: Is learning the basics first a prerequisite to observe, put the image away then draw the image I have in my head?

i would say they go hand to hand. When you are learning the fundamentals like shapes/ primitive shapes you should be using ref and looking at other artist who done it right and learn why it works. You cant draw something if you dont know how it looks or how it works.
