A local farmer had a lovely field of sunflowers . He invited the public to come and take 'selfies' with them for a small fee. It was hugely popular. It could be a source of income for the farmer, or for a charity.

Squash bugs are so bad! We had bad squash vine bores as well. I removed the bad leaves and with treatment they’ve rebounded. I’m sure the rain showers and any humidity attributed to the powdery mildew. The place is beautiful!

From my understanding pumpkins are heavy feeders and very sun hungry. I think the sunflowers made to much shade and prevented good airflow which gave you the powdery mildew. I have tried growing pumpkins and gourds for years with mixed success. I have had problems with it all, squash bugs, vine borers, powder mildew, finally start producing to late in the season. I have been told to mix in lots of compost and fertilizer in every mound and only plant 2 to 3 seeds in each and only keep the strongest plant. I am going to try again soon but I have to find something that kills squash bugs before I do. Those bugs are destroying my garden each year. Can never stay on top of them.

Heather Smith Thank you for your feedback and tips. We have been growing them for the past five years. Every year has never been a great year in the spot. That’s why we tried sunflowers here just for something new. We feel ultimately it’s just the location of the garden. We try to keep it more organic, but we do have a farmer that farms the surrounding field. This garden gets all of that run off. it’s also the most wet area of the field. We truly just need a new location for our pumpkins. We might have to dig up part of our backyard to have a successful patch.👍
