You had an excellent reading month! I should try Rigante soon. He Who Drowned The World should be read this month, my enthusiasm has been dampered but dammit I want to like it! So sayeth us all, Rex is a Good Dog.

I read a lot of good books in September, but the only truly great read I had was Mine by Robert McCammon. Remember when I finished Swan Song and you said that I convinced you to put it on your list for next year? Well, I'm asking you, as a friend, to also add Mine to your 2024 list as well. Just think back to how good of a book Boy's Life was. You gave it a gushing 5 stars, so well written, how enjoyable it was, how much you loved it. And then you've gone like 2 years without reading another one of his books... 2024 is the year you fix that, and our friendship depends on it. 😝

I think that it's a rite of passage to make Locked Tomb your entire personality once you fall head over heels in love with it 🤣🤣 I watched the livestream you did with Jordan, Alex and Kyle and that was SO MUCH FUN. And there were still some pieces of the puzzle that only clicked into place as I heard you guys talking about it lmao this series is so complex but just such a damn masterpiece! Also nice reminder that I need to get back to Dark Tower!! Will keep my eyes peeled for all the dedicated reviews you have planned, because I am very interested in all of those books! My favourites in September were The Last Ranger by JDL Rosell, The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun, D'Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding by Chencia C Higgins, The Ice by Ryan Cahill, Turning Darkness into Light (Lady Trent companion) by Marie Brennan, and the Burningblade and Silvereye trilogy by Django Wexler!! It was a great month! Hope October is treating you well 🥰🥰

I just finished Dogs of War. I'm looking forward to reading Bear Head soon. My best read of the month was Nemesis Games (book 5 of the expanse).

Couldn't agree more about the Dogs of War duology being way way way under-mentioned on our sphere of booktube for how many fantasy readers might really enjoy these highly accessible sf palate cleansers (I don't think anyone I've been following over the years on here has ever read it). You have me so intrigued with She Who Became the Sun! Also I'm not sure if Locked Tomb is for me, but I've enjoyed Moira Quirk before and definitely need to give the audio a try.

Sounds like a great month Sarah! I’ve been wanting to read Monster, because I really love the anime, and I’ve heard good things about 20th century boys too. Necromancy is my least favorite trope, so I probably won’t read Tamsin Muir lol.

This looks like such a great and varied reading month! I've enjoyed other works by Groff and I'm looking forward to reading Matrix and The Vaster Wilds later this year. Groff was interviewed by NPR and apparently these two books are the start of a loosely connected triptych. So just in case you didn't know you might be interested in grabbing The Vaster Wilds at some point too!

Hi Sarah, I'm glad you enjoyed Bear Head as well as Dogs of War, I think they are an excellent duology. In September I managed to read: In Books: Armored - Sci-Fi Anthology about power armour The Ritual - Adam Nevills (which the first 65% was great and last 35% awful) Children of Time - Adrian Tchaikovsky In Comics: Rat Queens - Volume 2: Far Reaching Tentacles of N'rygoth (re-read) Control - Judge Dredd Judge Dredd - The Complete Case Files 41 My book of the month was 'Children of Time' which was awesome. Adrian Tchaikovsky is 6 for 6 for me so far. Defo has become a must buy author for me now.

I can’t remember if you already have read City of Last Chances, but if you haven’t, that should be your next Tchaikovsky to read! I really want to read She Who Became the Sun: it’s so inexplicably intimidating so I always find excuses to prioritize other reads over it. 😭

Matrix was wonderful. You may also like The Corner That Held Them by Sylvia Townsend Warner about the happenings at a convent in the 12th century. And Hild, fictionalized early life of 7th century saint Hilda de Whitby, posing as seer to a king. The long awaited sequel Menewood JUST came out. Urasawa has another series, Pluto, that is a murder mystery spinoff set in the Astroboy world. It has a Netflix adaptation out this month that actually looks good

Does Matrix have any references to the Arthurian myth? The historical Marie de France wrote multiple stories in the Arthurian world.

Adrian Tchaikovsky is severely underrated! I’ve read a few of his sci-fi and fantasy series and I’m amazed how different each one is from the other. Moria Quirk is amazing! She narrated the War Eternal series by Rob J Hayes and brought that series to life! I’m going to listen to Harrow the Ninth this month 💀

I’ve been reading Tchaikovsky’s back list for awhile trying to find one I can say “I Love This!” so maybe I’ll check out Dogs of war next. I am currently waiting for Cage of souls from the library. I have just at DNFd City of Last Chances. You’d probably like it, but it was too grungy, gritty for me. Hope October is just as kind!

Rex is a good boy. I really need to restart Bearhead but I think I'll re-read Dogs of War cuz Rex. In September I read: Piranesi / Susanna Clarke - Masterly written. I can't wait to read this again and again and again. My book of the month. The Princess & The Queen / GRRM - Iain Glen did such a fantastic job with the narration. *Horror* Dunwich Horror / HP Lovecraft - Started off strong but it peaked around the halfway point. Horror at Red Hook / HP Lovecraft Nyarlathotep / HP Lovecraft - I listened to this weeks ago and barely remembered it so listened to it again. Meh. I doubt I'll be reading more Lovecraft in future. I know it's an unpopular opinion but I just don't find Lovecraft's writing all that scary. *Mystery* Disciple of the Dog / R Scott Bakker - I was disappointed with this one. There was an aspect I knew going in that I didn't realise was a spoiler so that ruined some of the mystery. The 2nd act was kinda monotonous. And one of the major elements I found to be a wasted opportunity and not very interesting after a while. There is a strong possibility some of that stuff just went over my head though. And at least two revelations a blind man could see a mile away. While I ended up appreciating Disciple Manning as a protagonist, I found him very annoying at times. Harry Dresden can be annoying but he's got interesting and likeable side characters to rein him in and challenge him so it balances out, but side characters were a let down here. Supposedly Bakker planned or is working on a sequel which I might read but it wouldn't be a day one read unless the wait for the continuation of the Second Apocalypse becomes truly unbearable. Sherlock Holmes: Inscrutable Masquerade Sherlock Holmes: Conundrum on Coach 13 - I can't remember who wrote these (it wasn't Arthur Conan Doyle) but it was worth it for Benedict Cumberbatch's narration alone, even if the mysteries weren't that great. *Self-Pub Fantasy* Bound & Broken 1: Of Blood & Fire - This was a lot of fun. I can't wait to read Book 2.

I have been quite busy with local elections and work (just got a new job as a librarian!) this September, so I just not gotten around to reading more then a few Historical Fiction Novels: I have finished «The Last Kong of Lydia» & «The King & The Slave» by Tim Leach (set during the expansion of the Persian Empire) and «Count Belisarius» by Robert Graves (about the Eastern Roman General who lead the Justinian Reconquest of North Africa and Italy, often dubbed the «Last Roman»). Just finished «The Silence of the Girls» by Kat Parker (the Iliad from Briseis' perspective) and have just started on «Return to Edan» by our dear Professor Philip Chase: I had originally thought I would not receive it before much later this month and had planned to read it first thing in November, but the Good Professor has invited me to a Edan Reader Discussion in mid-November, and once I got my hands on «Return», I could simply not wait! 😄So have pushed back on starting «The Name of the Wind» and I might also read «Tehanu» (Earthsea book #4) by Ursula K. LeGuin inbetween or right after «Return», as I have a hunch that it was highly influential especially for «Return»!
