It's good to hear you had a great, successful semester term at Orilium Academy. The Lilac Girls sounds very interesting. When it comes to novels with a historical background, I'd like to get to Sofia Andrukhovych's Amadoka trilogy some time soon. The first book starts with the war in Donbass in 2014 and a traumatised and disfigured nameless soldier who has lost his memories. The story is narrated from the point-of-view of an archivist who thinks she recognizes him as the husband she has lost. Her husband had left her a suitcase with documents that date back to his grandmother, and she tries to reconstruct a past that may be the nameless soldier's past or not. Andrukhovych uses the symbol of the Lake Amadoka, a lake that can be found on numerous maps that were made centuries ago. But maps were not precise back then and the lake may never have been at this location, but people still remember it to have been there. Sofia Andrukhovych uses it to question the things we remember and if they have really happened in the past the way we think they did. In the second and third novel the narrator changes with each book and we go from the 1920s to the 1930s and the persecution of Ukrainian intellectuals, and from the 1930s to the 1940s and the Nazi occupation and deportation of Jews, to create a panorama of Ukraine in the 20th century through traumatic events. It looks like Sofia Andrukhovych learned from her father who is also a renowned writer, that to write about the present it's safer to look at a mythical past. We may not be able to discuss certain issues today, but history tends to move in circles and there is the hope we may learn from what happened in a distant past. And hey, congratulations! This is some beautiful news and I'm happy for you two.💜

I really want to read belladonna and bride. But I don't like the sound of those vampires either... immortality is a big part of the vampiric experience. I am glad you enjoyed the boy the mole the fox and the horse. I really loved it too and it was so simple and sweet and needed.

If you get to Bride, I hope you’ll like it more than I did. The boy, the mole, the god and the horse was so lovely. Definitely one of faves now.
