These sounds take me back 40 years. Prophet is its own vibe. Instantly recognizable. And for us old cats, it brings an instant smile.

Yes, what you have described is exactly what I've tried to explain to some of the people who have commented. Some will never get it because they didn't have that original experience. I decided to plug in a Sequential Circuits Six-Trak last night. It was my very first programmable synth. At the time (age 14) I was disappointed it didn't sound like an 80's record. I bought a Boss CE-2 pedal, which helped a bit. Now revisiting it 35 years later I'm playing it completely dry and it's beautiful. The crazy part is that I still, after all this time, remember every parameter number and many of the patch locations. That proves something. Us "old cats" have a connection to these machines. I hope some younger guys decide to give it a chance and stop talking about what it doesn't do and just enjoy it's purity.

I've been browsing patches for a few weeks now and I gotta say this is my favorite sound set for the Prophet 5 I've heard yet. Very useful patches for songs. You actually got it to sound like actual organ speakers and one patch sounded like an actual Mellotron.
@jamesterris3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It's always a balancing act when doing sound design for synths. I try to mix it up and not just make sounds I like. That said, I like less mainstream electronic sounds, in the flavor a say AIR or Beck, or Radiohead. I like sounds that aren't obviously "synth". It's funny you caught the Mellotron vibe. I love them and own a very unique Streetly M4000 cycling tape version as well as the digital Mellotron M4000D and Manikin Memotron. Cheers!

@@jamesterris that’s exactly why I loved the sound set because it didn’t have all those synthy patches you’d expect. Someone could have told me the Italian Combo patch was a real organ and I would have believed them. I had no idea the synth was so versatile but it shows how skilled you are at programming. That mellotron collection sounds insane. Saving up for one myself. I’m buying a P5 this weekend for an album and I’m going to have a lot of fun with these patches. Looking forward to hearing more in the future and supporting the channel! 🍻

I think those not “wow’d” by the sound have to remember it is a mono output. Most polyphonic synths nowadays utilize stereo. The patches you hear (before going into a DAW and through effects) are mono. The raw sound is really gorgeous. Throw this through some delay and reverb and you could be blown away. Great demo BTW! Thanks for putting it together!

Nemesis or Night Sky - would be cool to hear.
@benanderson893 жыл бұрын
Polyphonic synthesizers are stereo _only when you apply internal effects_. Other than effects, they are all Monophonic. Everything, from the Prophet 6 to the DM12 to the Summit, can run on a single mono output if you don't use internal stereo effects. It's only the UDO Audio Super 6 that is a true binaural signal path.
@100haymaker3 жыл бұрын

Hey James , awesome sounds ! I just bought a slightly used prophet 5 yesterday and got it in and love the sounds . I am new to synths and come from the guitar player world . I am trying to set up the sound from the motels song “ only the lonely “ could you possibly give me some tips to get this patch dialed in? From what I understand it was based around factory preset 118 percussive organ . Thank you for any and all help and sorry to bother you ! Best Ethan
@jamesterris2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, is sounds like a synth organ preset played in 5ths, pretty straight forward. It's tough to explain, but generally those presets are a blend of a harmonic from resonance in combination with a short VCF envelope decay for the organ "click". Zero release on either envelope. You have to massage the cutoff frequency and VCF env. amount until it begins to sound like an organ. Even the most minute move can have a pretty drastic effect. As far as the VCO waveform, I've made organs out of all the them, depending on the type of organ I'm going for. Tri wave is more flutey and pulse can sound flutey to more harsh depending on Pulse Width. So, Hammond style to Farfisa. It's tough explain in text. Best to work off a preset that's close and l learn by trial and error. That's how I started 36 years ago! Good luck, thanks for checking out the video.

You won a new subscriber from me today. My only question is 5 or 10? ...If they included voice limiting like you mentioned, or split/layer, it would be easier to decide. Part of me is thinking the OG 5 is all you need really but, this will be my centerpiece of the studio so, I'm leaning towards the bad mama jamma Prophet 10.
@jamesterris3 жыл бұрын
I've already mentioned the voice limiting feature to them. I was told that I'm not the first to request it. I think there's a strong possibility they may implement it. The split/layer would be cool, but I think that's pushing it. I know Dave likes to key the secondary functions to a minimum to keep things clean and simple to use.

Nice sound design - was reading up on your responses to everyone here - it's nice to see some engagement (some folks on YT just give a thumbs up or 'love' a comment but then don't say anything). You mentioned the voice calibration for each voice as part of the charm of vintage synths - but then sold you vintage P5 for the rev4 (I believe). I too think voice chips just being slightly off can really add to the sound (in my Polaris and Polysix this often occurs but sounds great). So this didn't bother you going from the Rev 3 to the Rev 4? I didn't realize the envelopes were software based either - maybe it's not a big deal, but I definitely notice the difference in a lot of synth, though it could be a lot more going on than just the envelopes that contribute to the overall sound of them. I'm a little bummed there wasn't even a basic arp on it - but I get that they were keeping to the original (but then, why add all the different filters, use software envelopes instead of hardware, etc?). I usually just seem to connect better with gear that has an arp on it, even if I could use external gear for that. It's never quite as fun when another device is needed in the process. Just my two cents. Great stuff, thanks!
@auxorion3 жыл бұрын
The Envelopes should be coming from the CEM/SSM Filter chips (my understanding is that the chips are analog ICs). There is a lot of digital going on in the Prophet 5, but ultimately they're analog ICs creating what you hear, and the digital aspects are simply controlling parameter values for memory storage. If you're a purist (I understand, I'm the same way), maybe you'd prefer the Prophet 6. Dave constructed new VCO/VCF circuits from scratch using discrete components rather than chips (I think other than the T8, the Prophet 6 is the only product he has made with discrete analog circuitry). I have a P6 and it really sounds lovely. I think a lot of people get confused because we assume vintage = discrete analog circuits, and modern = IC (analog integrated circuits, on a chip).. .that's almost always the case except for Sequential Circuits brand synths. It goes the other way around...! The originals are ICs and the newer (Prophet 6) is discrete. With Dave's stuff, I'd say that each product he's putting out is good in its own way. When Dave does Digital, it's because he thinks it's better that way. Just listen to the lovely Prophet 12 (100% digital, and sounds gorgeous).
@jamesterris3 жыл бұрын
An arP would have been nice, but Dave really wanted to keep it as close to the original as possible. As for the envelops, the “Vintage” knob replicates the different versions. It’s a little like the “slop” feature but way cooler and customized to the way each vintage/Rev # performed. Rev 4 is super tight, a Rev 1 all over the place in a good way. That’s why they went with digital envelopes. They spent a lot of time developing that.

So now, the real question is Prophet 5 or Prophet 10!?
@aandarcom3 жыл бұрын
Divide the price by the number of voices and you will have an answer. :)
@jamesterris3 жыл бұрын
I’m opting for the 10 because I personally like slower movements and pads. I also just really want to hear and play a full ten voice polyphonic Prophet. It was still in development when I had my prototype 5 voice. I’ve played a couple vintage P10’s, including Dave’s, as well as his T8, but they’re different beasts. I am hoping that Sequential will include a voice limiting feature to allow for the original feel in polyphonic mode. I think that limitation really contributed to the overall vibe of the P5, similar to a Mellotron or Solina. You adapt to playing them differently to account for the idiosyncrasies of how they trigger.
@jamesmeeker69333 жыл бұрын
10, obviously. :)
@EverettDudgeon1383 жыл бұрын
Ehh I think the lack of bi timbrality does a great disservice to the P10. When people think of the Prophet 10 they think of what Tony Banks played. The two keyboard, two engine version wth poly sequencer...not the single keyboard single engine version with no sequencer.

Good catch. I didn’t listen to these for weeks, so unfortunately I didn’t notice until it was to late to fix. How are the envelopes? I know they are software recreations, so not exactly an original. Does it do anything strange when played quickly? Digital envs sometimes reset funny and reset to the zero point of the wave and make a click. I don’t understand why someone doesn’t reissue the ic adsr chips so we can finally get the digital out of these synths. I say that as I wait for an UDO. Lol
@jamesterris3 жыл бұрын
I haven't received my actual unit yet. The prototype I had was still being tweaked here and there. I did record my vintage Rev 3.3 side by side with it and found my envelopes for Attack and Release to be slightly longer. I think they may have settled on somewhere around 30 seconds. Comparing other functions were as expected with any analog and vintage synth, different, but not in a bad way. Take 3 vintage ones and they'll all have their own charm. As for playing fast and re-triggering, the Prophet 5 is know to have great envelopes and I would imagine the new one will be even better, especially snappy in Vintage 4 mode. I really liked dialing it back to Rev 1 & 2 when gliding in unison and playing chords. The magic is in the imperfection and mis-matched voice calibrations of those older units. I sold my beloved mint vintage Rev 3 after completing the sound design, so that says a lot.
@nickjones56413 жыл бұрын
@@jamesterris Well if it was enough to sell an original then I'm convinced. I was just concerned about envelopes being software and making the synth sound samey and stiff. I have a polysix that is all analog, is unruly, but I like that wonky sound.
@fawkkyutuu88513 жыл бұрын
I thought this was an absolute perfect recreation of the original down to the last detail? Do you hear a difference? I'm just curious what other people think when comparing.
@jamesterris3 жыл бұрын
@@fawkkyutuu8851 I only had my vintage Rev 3, and I'd say it 98% nailed it and the other 2% were improvements. Also, like most analog synths each sound a bit different. I've owed up to 3 or more of each of my vintage synths and you can't even compare them as good or bad, often just different.
@auxorion3 жыл бұрын
When Dave Smith makes something Digital, it's because he prefers it that way. He's no dummy (just listen to the Prophet 12). Besides, my understanding was that the envelopes are coming from the filter chips, they shouldn't be software, where are you getting this information from? Btw the popping sound isn't about Digital vs Analog, it's about how they decide to deal with zero crossing (the pop is when you have a waveform stopped in the middle of its cycle, forcing the waveform to go from its position back to zero suddenly - thereby causing your speaker to pop because it's trying to get from wherever it is back to zero). It's up to the designer of the synth how they deal with zero crossing - or if you're designing the Minilogue, you just don't deal with it at all. (Minilogue is 100% analog and it pops like nobody's business). The envelopes on the P5 Rev4 are either coming from the CEM/SSM or if they ARE software/digital, I'm certain he's done it correctly - even the manual states that when you switch the filter mode it also changes the behavior of the envelopes. It goes into great detail about this, and the manual seems very proud of this small detail being so accurate. I wouldn't worry.

The OB6 and Prophet 6 are wonderful synths. I agree you can get very close with both of those. The P5 is a work of art and for many, sold on it’s nostalgic factor and historic charm. @@jamesterris i totally get the attraction from people who've long wanted a prophet 5, but I'm not one of them and that thing is PRICEY.
@_EightySix3 жыл бұрын
@D MD Clearly they are two totally different synths, do you even common sense? Regardless of that fact, the OB6 is almost like king of the mountain when it comes to that vintage sound, and that is purely my opinion, but in listening to demos of the new Pro 5, I hear a lot of similar sounds. They are both analog polys done by sequential, and they are both clones of vintage synths, so is it that far off that they may sound similar? My main reason for stating this was due to the insane price point for a less capable synth. I'd love to have a new Pro 5, but I can get damn close with my OB6 in the meantime.

If you’re thinking of getting this - but you’ve got a Rev2 sitting untouched in your home, I would sit in a dark place for 30 days. After you come out of it, give some careful consideration to swapping the original for the reissue.

I have only heard a few demos of this but I haven't heard anything that was really amazing. I will have to wait for more reviews but so far not really that impressed.

I'm not sure what age you are or if you've owned or play a vintage P5. I can understand not being impressed by a patch demo of a Prophet 5 because the technology is pioneer tech and synthesizers have evolved so much in the past 35 years. As for my demos, your justified in not being impressed. I honestly hate making audio demos because I have to pull 100 little jingles out of my ass that don't necessarily represent my personal style or tastes. What the Prophet 5 does, it does well. It cuts through a mix in a special way. With just one OSC being Polymoded it produces an incredibly complex sound without any FX. In modern production you'd certainly produce it and it would sound much different. Maybe it's just not for you or the Prophet 6 or OB 6 is more your thing because of the FX, SEQ and ARP options. The guys that will buy this are industry pros, collectors, and enthusiasts.

@@jamesterris your demo was great it's just that I felt like I was hearing a Prophet 6 or Rev2. Like I don't know if this is different enough from those two synths. Just my two cents.

Heathcliff Honestly, between you and I if I were to go back on the road and use a Prophet, it would be a Prophet 6. I think it sounds so good, smaller, and much more polished for a live performance. For the price, if I didn’t already have a ton synths, I would just go get a 6. The beauty about the new one is that they’re selling nostalgia, and the clean simplicity of the original.

@@jamesterris my choice too, I don't own any modern polys but vintage ones, If I had to pick one from those are available now it would be Prophet 6

Yeah, incorrect. I sold my P6. It just lacked that certain something, that I hear in all Prohet 5 demos.
