Liked the video. Though, I'm personally not a fan of the "permanent vs. temporary" comparison for "ser" and "estar" because it tends to lead to a lot of overthinking for learners (I speak from experience 😅). Translating "to be tall/short" and "to be dead" are my favorite examples of why I think this comparison is flawed as height is something that's subject to change, which can be viewed as temporary, and death is pretty permanent, last time I checked. 🤔 I prefer to give my fellow learners this comparison instead: "ser" is the identity copula for identifying nouns and describing their attributes, and "estar" is the situation copula for describing the location, well-being, and emotions of nouns. (I do tell them that locating events is the exception to the rule.) Descriptions (names, attributes) Occupations Characteristics Times (the time & date) Origins Relations In all of these instances, you are identifying the noun or something about the noun, so that's why "ser" is the correct copula here. Position Location (except for events) Action Condition (feelings & well-being) Emotion In all of these instances, you are describing the noun's situation rather than identifying something about the noun itself, so that's why "estar" is the correct copula here. Going back to my examples "to be tall/short" and "to be dead," the reason I believe that "to be tall/short" is "ser alto/bajo" instead of "estar alto/bajo" (except in something like "Quiero estar más alto.") is because height is an attribute, which means it concerns the noun's identity, while the reason I believe that "to be dead" is "estar muerto" instead of "ser muerto" is because life and death pertain to well-being, which means it concerns the noun's situation. I think that better encapsulates the uses of the two copulae than the widespread "'Ser' is permanent. 'Estar' is temporary." If you put those examples under "permanent vs. temporary," it leaves more room for doubt in the minds of learners, but if you put those examples under "identity vs. situation," it gives learners such as myself a better idea of when each one is used 👍

Hi Lucia, this is such an informative video. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into not only this video but all your content… I do, however, have a question. Lately, when I either watch a movie or hear a song, I’ve noticed a very unfamiliar version of “estás”. That version being “estés”. I feel like I have looked online for a solution on when to use this version but I still find myself stumped. Is there anyway you’d be able to provide an answer or a better explanation? I’d really appreciate it.

Quiero aprender past preterite y imperfecto pasado de Ser y Estar en detalle por favor
@holamydailyspanish4 ай бұрын
Pretérito perfecto simple: Yo fui, tú fuiste, él fue, nosotros fuimos, vosotros fuisteis, ellos fueron. Yo estuve, tú estuviste, él estuvo, nosotros estuvimos, vosotros estuvisteis, ellos estuvieron. Imperfecto: Yo era, tú eras, él era, nosotros éramos, vosotros érais, ellos eran. Yo estaba, tú estabas, él estaba, nosotros estábamos, vosotros estábais, ellos estaban.

A very helpful video, delivered with your usual wonderful enthusiasm. I must say I can't see why the Spanish language chose to have the complication talked about - the meaning isn't changed in the great majority of cases, it seems. It's a bit like the random male/female designations, which are somewhat illogical and add nothing but unnecessary complications as far as I can see. But what do I know, as I'm only struggling on day 60 of learning Spanish!

Thanks for your comment and for watching the video! 😄 Glad that the video helped! Verbs at least doesn't have gender! But the adjectives and nouns do... I wish they didn't, it would be a more equal and fair language 😅 But you get used to it, you're doing good for just 60 days of learning 👏🏼👏🏼

El hecho de que la misma palabra (aburrido, rico, frío, listo) puede significar ideas diferentes, depende de si usas ser o estar, es intrigante. ¿Hay más ejemplos de eso?

Thsankyou for the explanations. However (and please forgive me ),half way through I give up because of the contradictions. And death is a permanent state so why use estar ?? 😕
@ferdieshoes23105 ай бұрын
I don't want to confuse anybody,but sometimes we use "ser" and "estar" for the same or similar idea, example: "cuando yo ESTABA pequeño,jugaba con mis hermanos". But I can say also: " cuando yo ERA pequeño,jugaba con mis hermanos ". Same idea using both verbs. No quería confundirlos,pero no me quedó remedio.😢
@holamydailyspanish5 ай бұрын
En España no lo usamos así. En Latinoamérica parece que usáis "estar" mucho más 😯
@ferdieshoes23105 ай бұрын
