Serban is my homie and very down-to-earth. We worked together for years at Teddy Riley's Future Recording Studio where he was just learning to mix. He was so dedicated to his craft that he used to fall asleep under the SSL console while reading manuals. He always displayed a stroke of genius he created a bass guitar with retractable frets and had it patented way back in the 90s

I totally agree with you. I recently purchased the new Gaslighter CD by the Dixie Chicks. I was so blown away by the quality of the mix that I wanted to see who did it. Turned out to be Serban Ghenea. The mix of the whole CD is beautiful but I particularly direct anyone, who wants to hear a good example of a nicely mixed song, to a song on the CD called "Everybody Loves You." So nicely done. Of course, credit should also be shared with the Producer, Jack Antonoff, and several other recording experts who are mentioned in the notes like Laura Sisk, Greg Eliason, Jon Sher, John Haines and of course the extremely talented Chicks. This, obviously, was a group effort by massively talented people. If you haven't listened to this CD, it is really worth a listen to for a great, clear, crisp mix.

Yes Steve! It's also in my Serban Ghenea playlist on Spotify, which I update frequently with new music. I definitely agree that it takes a team of people to make a great record, but Serban himself is a common thread between so many hits when others come and go, so I believe it's time he's recognized as an ARTIST and not just a technician.

I think to be fair - without discrediting any of his incredible work - in his case, he is not really taking the Sound of a "Demo" to the Sound of the final Product. The Projects he receives will probably sound like fully mixed and finished Songs already (Mix Engineers like Michael Ilbert who engineers Stuff that comes from Max Martin etc. and later goes to Serban Ghenea have suggested that). He then takes those Songs that at this stage could probably already compete with many other Mix Engineers out there and "just" takes those to a completely other sonic level that apparently only he is able to achieve as of right now...
@therosspalmer4 жыл бұрын
Hey Micha! I think this is a great observation. Obviously Max Martin is ALSO an alien (the subject of another video haha) and delivers near flawless work. But check out my playlist on Spotify for Serban. It's Serban's unbelievable consistency and quality through ALL the years that makes him what he is, IMO, but not trying to take ANYthing away from the field of talented mix engineers whom I admire and respect so deeply on a personal level!
@Baiaaoo3 жыл бұрын
I dont think so. Its a fact that everything on high level is very good even in the production stage, but even with artists that I LOVE, Serban mixes hit different than others that mixed the same artists
@itsroobeats3 жыл бұрын
It's fascinating that you mention all the artists at 2:16 that were largely produced a mix of Max Martin, Shellback and Dr. Luke. Those producers mixed with Serban (pun intended) seems to be the S tier for pop music.

Definitely! Max Martin is clearly one of the best songwriters/producers of a generation - it makes sense that he would choose to only work with the best mixer in the world as well. If you need a hit, you have to go with Serban.

Pensado's Place, Mix with the masters etc. I follow his son on IG and he also mixes artists right after getting signed to major labels. Man.. some peoples experience on earth are literally movies.
@therosspalmer2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree... I think based on my experiences in LA that no one wants to acknowledge how good he is because they see themselves as competing with him, and they know they can't... So it's easier to ignore/talk bad about the elephant in the room than to acknowledge there's a reason he's taking all the big work.
