🇷🇸 BELGRADE, SERBIA - Welcome to the Part 15 of 15 of my 2022 Serbia Travel series! It’s time to head back to Belgrade before heading to London for the first time in almost 3 years (I can’t even remember!). This video is part travel day (which I never normally film!) and part final impressions of Serbia after my 5th visit to this awesome country in the Balkans!
This area of Serbia is FULL of iconic destinations full of amazing food, history, and architecture - Užice, Čačak, Požega, Bajina Bašta, Zlatibor, and more, ideal for your Balkans trip! There’s much more to Serbia than Belgrade and Novi Sad!
This is my 5th visit to Serbia (I was first here in 2019). Two of my trips were heavily impacted by the pandemic, but in 2021 I managed to explore quite extensively, visiting outstanding locations such as Kruševac, Subotica, and Kragujevac!

Hi just a quick update! If you post a comment and you see that it's disappeared, it's not because I have deleted it. KZbin itself does censor by deleting comments I'm afraid, especially given the subject matter, which ties into the 'western ideologies' subject! Honestly, my heart has been warmed by every comment, has backed up what I said about how Serbs respond, and has definitely opened my eyes a little into how I am conditioned to think a certain way, having grown up in western Europe. We may have differing beliefs and values. That's OK! As I said in this video, our backgrounds and upbringing are different and any belief or opinion is valid. What I probably didn't do in this video is consider Serbia's history as more of an influencing factor. It's all very difficult to articulate in a KZbin video! Ultimately this is all what makes Serbia one of my favourites, regardless of the niggling negative aspects. The fact that even as Serbs, you can acknowledge some of the negatives and realities instead of being insulted due to a bizarre national pride I've experienced elsewhere, is what makes the difference. I couldn't have made this type of video anywhere else. But please can it be OK for men use moisturiser? Lol

If someone who has a comfortable and safe life invites you as a guest and then instead of polite conversation starts shouting at you "My house, my rules! Respect me!" - that would be very rude and even insane. But if someone is attacked in his own house, robbed, a part of his family is killed, they are driven out of the house and on top of all that they are declared guilty. In that case, you must understand that such a person has the right to shout "This is my house !". I want to say that Serbian nationalism is not arrogance but a consequence of the injustice suffered.

No one is "declared" guilty who wasn't guilty. Serbs from Serbia were barely impacted by wars throughout Yugoslavia, that's why people here know little about the actual conflicts. Kosovo is home to Albanians too and they're part of a vast majority. 9 out of 10 victims in the Kosovo war were Albanians. I'm Serb from Kosovo and didn't visit my village ever since (which is over 23 years), but I'm not brainwashed by tabloid media or immersed in degenerate nationalism which makes people brain-dead zombies. Instead of crying for no reason, think.

@@stef1896 Either you are falsely presenting yourself as a "Serb", or you are a typical case of a autochauvinist. Autochauvinists among Serbs are those groups and individuals who, under political, media and financial American influence, have accepted and advocate anti-Serb attitudes. The Western media and political influence in Serbia is extremely strong, Serbia is practically a Western protectorate, and that is why we have such unfortunate cases of Serbs parroting the Western narrative about events in the Balkans. This is nothing unusual, in human history there have always been those who sided with the conquerors and turned against their collective.

@@branimirnikolic4559 Your predictable answer is equal to a bot, which is sad. You can ask any Serb from Kosovo about the massive plunder that was happening to Albanians. But that is too much to ask from a bot and a coward. You're pretending victimhood to polite foreigners who don't want to tell you how pathetic and ridiculous you truly are. You never saw war, let alone having enemy forces in your house, who plunder and burn your house. This was happening to many Serbs, but not to you, or Serbs living in Serbia - proud keyboard warriors.

Serbia is economically underdeveloped because most of the time in modern history was in a war, political and economic crisis. We support the Russians because our enemies and war always came from the West, and the Russians never attacked us and supported us whenever they could. Russia played a big role in the liberation of the Serbs from the Turks. Serbs were slaves of Turkey for several centuries. When the Turks left, the Western powerful countries immediately expressed their pretensions in the Balkans and attacked the Serbs and Serbia, and it is still the same today.

Very good points. When I said about mini-russia I was more referring to the current conflict than anything historical but everything you said is accurate and perhaps contributes to the feeling I had. I feel that the issue of pushing 'western ideologies' is very new for those from the west, perhaps not for those in Serbia. It's a really complex issue!

OK, here is the deal on the issues you touched. Regarding the differences in regional development, this is an extremely NEW development for Serbia. Go back 15 years and Belgrade looked every bit as derelict as what you saw in Kraljevo (a beautiful town which could definitely use a facelift along the Ibar waterfront) or Nova Varoš. They only started large scale restaurations of facades and renovations of the center of Belgrade like 7-10 years ago and don't even get me started on how the Belgrade waterfront area looked before the project began. You have no idea how surreal it is for me who's seen decades of nothing but economic devastation to actually see ANY place in Serbia that is thriving like Belgrade, Novi Sad, Zlatibor and so on and it's not like we're in a position to be picky about foreign investment and where it goes. So, no, it's not a case of purposeful neglect of the periphery, but much more a case of a whole group of people drowning and the strongest one finally making it to the boat and being ready to pull the others in.

🇬🇧 Hi everyone! As shown on screen in this video, apologies for the camera issues. There was an issue with the gimbal (probably overuse!) meaning it was jittery or shuddering at some points. This is also an issue in the next video from my hometown but I am trying to minimise the impact when editing. The issue is 90% fixed for the video after that!! Strangely enough, I had a similar camera issue the last time I filmed in London in 2017! Bizarre! From London, you can expect an unexpected reaction to being back in my hometown, classic food, brutalist architecture, and honest opinions as always! Regarding Serbia final impressions, I think I clearly alluded to the fact I'm not a Serb and there's no way I could be a political expert. My views are particularly aimed at those visiting Serbia who may be in for a 'shock'! Everywhere has positives and negatives, but ultimately, Serbia will always be one of my top 3 countries and anyone who dares to say Serbia has nothing to offer, will of course get a punch in the face LOL Hvala Serbia! Until next time! 🇷🇸 Zdravo svima! Kakav parsley bre! Do sledećeg puta!

I don't think I ever 'told people how to live their lives'. I said something along the lines of 'people have different upbringings and backgrounds which we have to respect'. And yes, I'm well aware people may think my morals are backwards (I never specifically alluded to what my views were) but I'm talking about it from my point of view and what a foreigner may encounter when visiting for the first time ie who my videos are aimed at. Why would my videos be aimed at Serbs when I'm not from Serbia? It's far from backwards for someone to be able to be the person they are, that's basic humanity. I shouldn't need to cut my hair short and change my behaviour to avoid death glares from 1993-era Miroslav outside Meridian betting shop 24/7. It's great to hear the word 'git' though. It was one of my Dad's favourites! Also 'sod'!

It’s a classic marxist communist tactic. They are feminising and destroying White western men so that they can not defend themselves from mass migration of black and muslim men being brought into Europe, which is intended as ethnic replacement and is in fact a type of war. Word racist was invented for the same purpose to stop objection to ethnic replacement. Nothing worse than Western people indoctrinated with Western (jewish controlled) media, come to Serbia to lecture us about our ‘genocides’ and our wars. What Nato did to Serbia is beyond genocidal and criminal. In fact Serbia has been occupied by USA since 2000 colour revolution Otpor, financed by CIA. They now control Serbian media and try to spread the same poison and lies they do in the West

I have to inform you that before financial system was centralized and people from the smaller cities were calling the government for taking their money and investing only in Belgrade but the truth was that the money from Belgrade was going elsewhere so decentralization was done and today taxes from Belgrade are staying in the Belgrade and ofc that now Belgrade is booming because how much money town is generating from the population size to the number of tourists and plenty other things, all I can say is that the Belgrade has never been richer in the history simply because everything stays in Belgrade. They wanted that, but now small towns simply doesn't generate enough money for the services, development is in their dreams. There's is no going back to the old system but the government can subsidy the opening industry territory for every city that's doesn't have enough money but to be able to do that there's a lot of infrastructure to be done because the company will not come if they don't have easy access to the roads, trains, gas pipeline and other things that's important for the industry. That's the only way. Others can invest in the natural tourism for example, everyone needs to exploit what they have and somehow to generate jobs, jobs = development its very connected now. I just wanted to explain you that.

As always - good one ! We do appreciate honesty and , if said in respectful way - you get respect back . On the point of toxic masculinity (guys in betting shops and rude reaction on the street) - you can find fools (there are other words for it too) anywhere , but it is a result of last 30+ years of destroying old system of values and economy , resulting in poverty and (in some cases) desperation (and I mean constant economic/financial pressure , worrying + toxic politics) , which can result , occasionally , in lashing out towards other people for a minor things. Some people (men) lost their purpose and don't see the light at the end of a tunnel , so they are just dragging through life , hopping for a miracle (winning a bet with huge bonus ?) , that will change their circumstances for better (they fail to see that real change must come from inside). Regarding the so-called "pride" parade , well , for most of Serbian citizens - enough is enough. Wast majority of people don't mind those lgbt-what ever people (they can do what ever they like to - in private) , as long as they don't try to impose their so-called values (what is the VALUE in someone's sexuality?) on us and our children , in public , through media , even trying to "normalize" it through laws. We see it as just another toxic western influence (and , as you probably know , we do have some grudges towards collective west , for about 100 or so years, even in recent history and we have long memory). You've said that it looks kind of "backwards" , since it is a 2022 , but (considering how well things are going and look in the west right now) , people can go "forwards" - right into abyss (I'm not ill wishing to anybody , but decadence , as a result of Neo-liberalism , is showing it's ugly face). Support for Russia - it is , for some people , more of a tradition (somewhat mythological , in my opinion) , since Russia is perceived as a keeper of Byzantine eastern Orthodox Christianity , in one hand , and in the other , we never fought Russia (in all of it's iterations) in wars. More important thing (again , in my opinion) is comparing Mr Putin to western officials (really , I can not call them "leaders"). If you can be bothered , just watch some of Mr Putin speeches (original version) and compare it to any western official , on a same subject and/or event - you'll see the difference and why is he so popular , never mind the western propaganda media machine. Besides , Putin is in power for more than 20 years and he pulled out Russia from 1990's hell-hole that it was , to current position (citizens are being taken care of , at least in basic necessities) , while economic position of Europeans is steadily declining in a last 15 or so years (personal freedoms as well). In light of current conflict , we feel for ordinary Ukrainian people (war is in our living memory) , excluding Neo Nazi people and their puppet - Nazi government. I'll keep watching your videos , as long as you stay "on air" and the invite for coffee (lunch) still stands , if you visit East Belgrade gate again sometimes. All the best !

@@SuperKillburn He did , by every measure possible (if we compare living standards , rule of law and overall economics and , if you will , political status of Russian federation in the world) . That doesn't mean that Russia doesn't have (Russian people) it's own problems and some poverty (it is a very big country with , I believe , 26 nationalities ) and that Russia (in general) is heaven on earth. For sure , Russia is in much , much , better position than in 1990's. That also doesn't mean , that everybody has to like Mr Putin. But , if you compare (for example) his speeches to Mr Biden's , or some European officials , you can easily see why people like him better than others. I'm not his advocate , nor do I care too much , but I prefer him (if I have to choose , for some reason) than any of western officials (especially un-elected people from EU commission). Though , I do understand that most people go by their own feelings and projections , w/o doing any analysis on facts , or information they have been offered. If you meant , in your last comment , that Russia wasn't "hell hole" (I'm sorry for that expression , it just came to mind at the time) in the 1990's , that is a different point , depending on a perspective.

Hi I'm from Jagodina, and there are some nice places to see here, and various amenities for people, free bus from the villages around to the city for everyone, ect, we have here a big park with a forest, waterfall (not nature), restaurants, an aqua park with pools, a zoo whit animals, a go-kart track to drive, big center for big markets. The village near Jagodina has a wonderful place to rest next to a big river, a restaurant with a view of the river, nice air, spa center, massage, gym, horses for riding, swimming pools, a big new beautiful church, it was almost planned to start from a nearby village driving by yacht on the big river, with a suitable plan and program of visiting some historically or touristically significant places. The town next to us (where I used to live) also its surroundings have beautiful nature, waterfalls, and nice places to visit eg Grza, Sisevac, ponds there, fish restaurants, clean icy rivers, beautiful monasteries. And about that gays, I honestly rarely see people without hair here 😂, and in life no problem I didn't experience here, I am very free and very happy, people are normal and nice, family people, but everything is possible everywhere, however it has nothing to do whit people but whit some individuals. We have here 4 churches, three museums, nice places for eat, for drink black beer 🍺🍻, in near past we have big pub for beer(long live in past), also Jagodina had her brewery from 1852 until these days, also near Jagodina in a nearby wooded and hilly village, there are sulfur springs with healing water, also in Jagodina we have here very good springs with good water not healing but good, I always took from one of them water for home 😊 a positive thing in Jagodina is because the city takes poor children to the sea for free, they also took doctors and nurses, a city giving money to the poor, and families whit more children, and for every new baby. In fact is not bad, and my going out would be to the - out market, which is big, and then some days I go to a turkish specialty drink - Boza, not every town have - boza 😄 (!), so we in Jagodina are very happy for that 😄

Serbia doesn't need to improve on Gay parades. If you think it's backwards you can attend any Western European country for that event. Just like you said if every city in Serbia had a Aquapark, it would be boring we'll you can't change the narrative Tao on this one to prove your point. I really admire Serbia, Russia and other countries who do not want any part of this gay parade. You're talking on two sides of your mouth. You hate to see an aquapark in every city in Serbia but then you say Serbia is backwards because all of Western Europe and America participate in gay parades. I'm glad the next generation of Serbs are still fending off this gay parades. If the Serbs who are gays can't participate, they can fly to Germany or stream privately in their room another parades from a neighbouring country but not going to happen in our country.

All valid points! Personally I think it's important people are able to be themselves in life. I've seen the damage firsthand of a man being forced to marry a woman and have kids when he was actually gay because he was from a background or culture which didnt allow it. As I said, everyone's views are valid and what you're saying shouldn't be classed as phobia. Ultimately for me being from the UK, some views do seem backwards in that certain things aren't being embraced, but I can't expect a whole country to change overnight. These things take time! I was joking about the aquaparks by the way!

Cheers David for visiting and still being here even though u found some things u found uncommon or rather not pleasant. I'm glad you liked it and found also good things. I don't want to get political about stuff... But i feel like even the pride population is different here in Balkans than elsewhere? Haven't traveled to confirm that, but from my meeting people here, like 99% here are totally normal, compared to lets say USA... I don't know, I'm not stubborn to my thoughts and opinions, because its not factual proof... And yes there are lot of douchebags here, I had few bumps just like u did on street with that guy... Had same experience as well... But all and all I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and hard place. Since I'm not for or against most stuff here... I try to observe it objectively except for the Kosovo stuff... I used to be against stuff for pride and all, but then I decided to meet someone who I guess fits into that group... Either way I made this comment just to somehow tell u my thoughts and all... Since this will probably be the last time u come here, I wish u great luck in life, and whatever u decide whether to live in Poland or UK, i just hope u find your heart in that place... Backgrounds and upbringing are different all over the world and we cannot simply expect everyone to conform to certain ideologies overnight. This feels like a TedTalk! I live my whole life in Serbia and I don't understand why so many people are so homophobic, religious or just dumb. I don't think that has changed in general in the last 30 years. Maybe it got worse... I know a lot of people I just can't talk to because we don't have anything in common. Since I'm a liberal atheist, it's difficult for people to understand you. I believe that after the wars, because of the poverty, people didn't really learn and educate themselves here. I'm learning all my life and I have much more wealth than the normal Serbian, but since I don't see any point in living here, although I earn a lot of money, I want to emigrate. There are a lot more religious young people, which annoys me as my generation was raised quite atheistically. I'm 29 years old and I know a lot of good people, but there are more and more right-wing extremists and I don't understand it. I would also like to say that many men are frustrated here because they have no prospects. Especially in the south men are not educated and have no jobs. In our society, in my area, women rule and men are quite passive, but in other parts of the country, men are horrible. With more money comes more freedom and people become happier and friendlier to others.

Not pro Russia no, rather not for the west NATO pushing innocent souls into war. As for pride no need to have a parade pretty selfish considering the havoc it brings to the city. The parade can be held in a more rwlote setting not blocking the way to the hospital or parks that kids play basically making city folk prisoners for the day restricting movement. As for religious background and tradition this is what kept us sane while the west terrorized former Yugoslavia 1991- 2000.

Thank you for your honesty about your impressions of Serbia. You are absolutely right and it is very sad that so little money is invested in the development of smaller towns. It's not only stupid, it's destructive. I am very sorry that you had inconveniences during your stay in Serbia. You are a guest and something like that should not have happened. As far as Gay Pride is concerned, contemporary does not mean better. In ancient Greece, pedophilia was quite normal, but today it is unacceptable. There are many such examples. Homosexuality is currently fashionable in the West, but that does not mean that it will be so in the future. Of course, it will always exist, but there will be no propaganda as it exists today and no pressure to accept the so-called gender ideology.

I heard a speech of Putin's on this and I actually understand where he's coming from. In the West, there is this belief that you 'have to' go along with the 'trending' ideology regardless of your own views (cancel culture etc). And they say Russia is oppressed. It's a shame Ukraine is used as the battleground to wage this war. I've probably said too much! Personally I'm all for expression and being who you truly are (what I was referring to when I said 'backwards'... from some it seems even this isn't accepted), but not when it's forced on people who lead different lifestyles. Pride should happen but there's a respectful way of going about it, like with anything

I blame both sides for that day. We have a lesbian prime-mister and we've had Gay Pride parades before. Then the activists got ahead of themselves and invited Europride. The country just wasn't ready for week-long celebrations and parades with thousands of visitors from Europe. Especially given the economic crisis and what is seen as daily abuse from the West and the EU regarding Kosovo, sanctions on Russia etc. The nationalists took advantage of all the bottled up resentment and frustrations, and the other side should have seen this coming. It was just dumb politically to push their agenda too hard too soon. PS As always, you do brilliant analysis, this stuff is very useful to Serbia. As I said before, you deserve honorary citizenship or at least permanent resident status.

Thanks I'll be waiting for another passport! I know what you mean, like I said behavioural and cultural change take time, and as you quite rightly say, not everywhere is 'ready' for that. If everywhere was, everyone in the world would have the same ideologies and beliefs. Regardless of the issues, Serbia is still a 10/10 for me.

You mistake my review of Serbia as negativity, it's not at all. I have returned to Serbia 5/6 times, it's one of my favourite countries and I have A LOT of respect for Serbs. After this video I did realise there was a lot more depth I could have added which wasn't really possible with time constraints. But since I have discussed a lot around Western and Eastern mentalities and hope to bring different views next time. I hope you know what I mean!

Although i am moving to Nis from Sydney, Australia, there will be a few thing i will need to adapt to and shit me no end. One is, how things are black n white to them. They have tgeir mindset and that is it. I have an online biz and i offer therapy to students afterwards. My friend said, ppl in Derbia dont go to therapy. I said, mate im not marketing to Serbs, im online so im marketing worldwide. I still dont think he gets it. Then another friend changes girlfriends weekly. At the age of 35 i would have thought him to be more emotionally mature. He is still living with mummy and daddy. The problem is how close the kiids are to their parents and never leave home hence they never grow up. Yes i know, financially it is near impossible to live alone yet still....these ppl have never paid their own rent or electricity bill. Since i come from a personal development background, if i want something, it is up to ME to go get it. Ppl in Serbia are still so used to being given everything that self-creation is an unknown concept. Their concept of the diversity of life and laws of the universe is almost non existsnt and cos of that, the amount of victime mentality is beyond reason. Most males up to the age of re 40-45 are so emotionally shallow. At the same time,i think most men are like this worldwide. I dont know what it is, yet out of hundreds of slavic men i know in Sydney who were born o'seas and moved here are even sicker innthe head and heart and more shallow than the ones who live o'seas. I dislike my own ppl here in Sydney and have no slavic friends as the best i can describe them is as a bunch of absolute fuckeits

I think that you are making a massive mistake when you are saying that Serbia is a "Mini-Russia". Honestly, if you just about look at any aspect of life, it really has absolutely nothing to do with Russia, starting from the Culture which is completely different, going all the way to the history, to customs, to the mentality, the way of life, politics and everything else, its like literally just like comparing UK to India, just because, lets say, there are tons of Indians living in UK. The reality is that tons of uneducated people who live in those smaller cities have no idea what they are talking about, never travelled the world to see what the f is going around them, and then on top of that they have the balls to complain how life in Serbia is bad, or my personal favourite. to hear from Serbs how they are living in "Totalitarian or Authoritarian Dictatorships".... Mate, its just fkking funny, that's all I will say, these people do NOT know what they are talking about. I think that the people are very smart and that they understand that is has nothing to do with Russia, but that the Serbian government is very smart and is cutting deals with US as much as with Russia, making their own politics for the greater good of the people. If you spend 12 minutes of your time, you will totally understand what it is that am talking about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3Sni2itdqanbbc&ab_channel=Redacted But talking to a decent number of Serbs about this IS a fing suicide mission, its just sad. But nevertheless, its getting better and more and more people are actually understanding how things are turning out for the better.

I first travelled to Serbia in the naughties and have noticed many changes both positive and negative. However, the most concerning change has been the 'in your face' rise of some of the worst forms of Nationalism and intolerance I have seen, second only to the horrendous changes I have seen back in the UK. The people of both countries are far better than that!

We are proud of the fact that we have the strongest national identity in enslaved Europe and that we were the only ones who did not impose sanctions on Russia! Did you know that we were the first to upraise against hitler in enslaved Europe? Otherwise, we were drawn into that war through the british secret service, to perish for your interests!

@@suki376 There is a difference between patriotism and nationalism, even though the terms might have had the same roots centuries ago. Nationalists consider nationality to be one of the most important human values, often beliving in superiority of a particular nation or nations, and following what they consider to be national interests without consideration of (or to the point of detriment to) interests of other nations or people who disagree with them. The worst forms are the ones that result in violence and repression. Intolerance means that you don't respect opinions, choices and lifestyles that are different from yours.

@@dragankondic4168 Totally wrong. I see no difference between patriotism and nationalism. It is basicaly the sam thing. Nationalism is simply love for your nation, your state, your fellow people, your roots, your tradition... etc... no more no less... It have nothing to do with superiority or other shits... Regarding intolerance, I would like to know what is not tolerated by the serbs (generaly), in any way? If you ask me, there is no more tolerant people or nation (Just to remind you that Serbs ARE both people and nation, even if the first one (narod) cannot be fully and correctly translated in English) in the world then Serbs.
