This reminds me of my scout days.You can buy all of those items from Field Rations in any store in Serbia. Ministry of Defense simply put together list of affordable items for rations packs. Takovo is a well-known company, they have great juices, snacks and sweets too.

3:13 You have no idea how awesome it was. I was serving in Yugoslavian military back in 1994. I always had few cans of that. Just in case I don't like meal served in mess hall. Also we had beans served on regular basis in mass hall too. We even have name for that. Vojnički pasulj - military/army beans. 4:41 Actually when you assemble mass kit you can place it over you thigh/knee so you don't have to hold it in your hand or place it on ground. And yes 1 liter of water is always worth its weight. Especially when you serve in country where 35 Celsius(95 Fahrenheit) in normal summer temperature. Military food in Yugoslavia was always good and healthy. It was food so rich in nutrients after 4 months of service I gained 10 kg(21 pounds). I gained no fat, all muscle. Without additional supplements.

Excellent video! This looks like the best mess kit ever made. I bought 5 of these kits since you presented this one so well. Now my wife and son and I can camp together using it.

This mess kit like any other military equipment made in Serbia was copied then modified from other european nations. They would look at the best ones from other armies, combine few different ones into something new and make it even better. Every piece of it has dual or multiple purpose, and everything fits nicely in one small package with minimum wasted space.

im an american we no longer have a usable mess kit they give us a mess kit that is good for field kitchen rations or m.r.e.s that you dont need a mess kit for if something happened you could not survive out of our mess kit. i really like the serbian mess kit.

I think this is nice, but I like the old boy scout steel mess kits, if I can find one, also Russian German and Swedish ones. I like to call them goulash kits because of the deep pots.

That does look like a really good kit, food looks ok too. I might see if I can find one some place! Good the flies seem to have calmed down, they sure were overwhelming a few weeks ago. I received this exact model as a gift from my parents over 15 years ago. They are really sturdy, i got it used and definitely put it thru a lot myself but still seems like new except for a few scratches. Its sitting on my shelf behind me now but used it a bunch when i was with the scouts and still use it occasionally on field trips.

Compact and light weight means efficient use of space. Good to know what a good kit that is. My personal favorite is the U.S. WW2 stainless steel canteen and cup with stove kit. Hard to find and expensive. The metal canteen allow one to boil water and sanitize the canteen. Plastic canteens melt. This is the kit that Canterbury simply modernized and is a money maker. It is apparently well regarded. I like the original best.

It’s the best mess kit, and the foods. I used it in war in 1991-1992. Back then you could also find a 125g Mirna Rovinj sardines can in the ration (Sdo-C).

just quick tip for everyone with canned food in their mre. do not put can on open fire and warm up that way, it will burn and change taste of food. fill the metal cup half with water, warm up water, then put the can in water and continue to heat up. it will not burn, will heat up evenly. enjoy your meal. and, if you have tab to open a can, use it :)

I remember while serving in JHA or Yugoslav Peoples Army taste of that ghastly mix of coffee and honey for a first time and those dry fruit blocks on which you can chew whole day without making a dent .I see that they still serving high glucose candy as a supplement. It is interesting how little change was made in 30 years time .I like this mess kit it is around £10 for used one on e-bay ,but I would gladly pay double for new one . I wonder does American MRE from 30 years ago taste same as the one today.

Thank you Gene :) You can't buy it online LOL It's an old Soviet 1986 set and the pattern is from the early 1950's. Serb mess kit can be found at the Finnish shop called "Varusteleka" at a not bad price. I got this from a friend in Serbia so i have no idea where to get the rations.

The Serbian mess kit is being imported into the United States by 'Duluth Trader', a Europe-focused surplus merchant with a keen eye. As you explain it, the whole system makes sense...again, would I need a new one each day? How many calories does a mess kit provide? Well, how many calories are provided by the food in this Serbian ration?

I've go that mess kit and it's pretty amazing as as cook set and pretty much perfect for bushcraft. but still requires something to cook the food in as the set is aluminium.
