As Russians stream into Crimea to help wrestle it away from Ukraine, an unlikely group of Serbian war veterans, who have experience fighting in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo, are turning up at the checkpoints too. VICE News reporter Simon Ostrovsky follows Russian troops as they continue their occupation of Ukrainian military bases, and learns about unidentified men in masks attacking journalists reporting on the situation in the peninsula.

As a Serbian, I do not approve these volunteers from Serbia. No war is good, but civil war is the worst. These morons didn't understood from their own past experience that their actions did only bad for Serbia. Now what? They will make it worse to Ukrainian people as well? There is nothing worse than having neighbour against neighbour and brother against brother in horrible civil war. To note, during the Second World War in Yugoslavia was the highest number of partisans (after the USSR) who fought with the Nazis (Germans in occupied Yugoslavia were forced to keep more than 35 divisions to contain guerrillas - more than in any other European country). The reason there haven't been any "official" shots is because the Ukrainian military was ordered not to give in on the provocations. That's what happened in Georgia in 2008, when undercover Pussians began provoking the Georgians and they started shooting back, thus giving reason for Putin to invade. Serbs are not "everyone",that Crimea territory was once Serbian,there are many places that carry Serbian names there like "SlavjanoSerbsk". Serbian Hussars were formed there and fought there for the Russia in 1723. There were 2 regions in that time one was called "New Serbia" and other "Slavic Serbia",50.000 Serbs lived there. I had finished a tour in the US Marine Corps and was a college freshman when the Bosnian-Serbian-NATO conflict was ongoing. Us cold war vets were training exclusively during our service to kill communists, primarily Russians. I remember the constant bombardment with anti-communist slogans, viewing slides and films of the lives led by many unfortunate people, and not wanting to wait another minute to go and help save them from their government. Today, I am glad we never fought our former WWII allies. Because once I was out of the military and away from the brainwashing, I met students in college from Russia and the Ukraine, which was still the USSR at the time. I learned it was not the people of Russia and the Soviet Union who were our enemies. It was the politicians and therefore their government that was our enemy, but it was an enemy of the Russian people too. The sad thing is that most of them didn't know anything different and were subjected to extensive propaganda about the West. They had no idea what it's really like in the states where you can travel freely, with no oversight or government intrusion. Access to education, uninhibited freedom to explore knowledge via huge libraries without censorship, and the ability to speak openly against the government without fear were all foreign concepts to the students I met back then.

I think it's pretty fair to say that they have shown every side that they have been able to so far, even sides I didn't even know existed (The Serbians) They've shown that the Russian soldiers themselves are just following orders and seem nice, they've shown that the Ukranians seem to think this too, they've shown the pro Russian supporters, the non-pro supporters. They've tried to talk to various Russian authority figures but have been refused on most occasions it seems like and this is still a continuous video series. People on here making derogatory comments about the Serbs in Crimea - You must not understand what happened in Serbia. These men are there to volunteer their services as a way to pay back the Russians who volunteered during the Serb war. Very horrid war that tried to commit genocide on the Serbians. I'm heartened to see such courage, those men are good men. I am for the Russians keeping Crimea as NATO may want it for their own dirty plans of setting up bases there, howeverrrrr, I do not like to hear of ANY Journalist being mistreated. That is unfair. Those few who have done this should be punished by the Russians. Period.

Whoever thinks that one side is better than the other is very ignorant. Each side has their own personal reasons for holding Crimea. And if you think (like most other people seem to think) that the Russian soldiers are being very bossy and provocative towards the Ukranian soldiers, it's because THEY WERE GIVEN ORDERS TO. They probably don't want to start a conflict, but the sad truth is that they cannot disobey orders from their superiors; if they're told to invade the base, they must do it. Not really because they want to, but because they HAVE to. Just listen to what the colonel from the Ukrainian Airforce had to say at 8:48 . And stop calling these Russian soldiers "animals" and "primitive beings". Think before you speak.
