The Otterhound is not just a dog breed, it's a rare and fascinating breed with a rich history. With its webbed feet, shaggy coat, and playful personality, the Otterhound is a breed unlike any other.
Originating from England, the Otterhound was bred for hunting otters in rivers and lakes. They have a strong sense of smell, excellent swimming abilities, and an insatiable curiosity, making them the perfect hunters. But as hunting became less popular, the breed became rarer, with only a few hundred individuals in existence today.

I use to groom a Rhodesian ridgeback dog when I was a groomer. His owner socialized him well and he was a behaved pup. The owner did tell me that the breed is known for their aggression but the owner worked hard on puppy classes and socializing at parks with strangers. The dogs coat was the shiniest coat I ever seen. One of my favorite clients because of how well behaved he was.

The first one I was literally raised with. From four months old until I was 15. In her prime she was only about 65 pounds. And a tiny color. She was built much more like a greyhound. But she had those hound floppy ears. Best dog I’ve ever had. A incredible tracking dog. That if you take her camping. And put her on a screw leash. And go canoeing. She would chew through the steel cable. And hunt you down the river. Did not like water much. Angel of a dog. Had black tips on the ridge upper back and a black muzzle. Second one was a male neutered when we got them at just a few months old I don’t quite remember. He was the same coloration without any of the black except on the tips of his ears and on his toes. And the tip of the tail. Had him till he sadly got hit by a car at five. He was 101 pounds and built like a lion! Not an ounce of fat on him. But he was only may be 4 inches or so taller than she was. But he had a much larger head with a little bit more gowl from the bloodhound. My last one was another male. Who had a much fiery red complexion when he was in the sunlight. And almost a mat tan and low house lighting. He was 224 pounds when he died. Also at five years old. One year after the first boy. He got bit by a cottonmouth while he was guarding the chickens. He was the most lovable lumbering oaf you had ever met! Definitely favored both the great Dane and the mastiff! He could walk straight up to our tall kitchen table and slide his chin straight on. He had floppy hound like ears. That would stand straight up when he would point! Although he had broken his tail like nine times so that thing was all kinds of funny. But you could tell when he was pointing! But when he was going after something. Man he could move like a freight train! Nothing stopped him. Fences, cars, sheds, trees I mean he just barreled, bolted, jumped over and tuck and dove through stuff like he was some sort of gymnast. It was the weirdest thing to see ever. But him and feather would run like hell all over the place. It was hilarious! By the way the last one. He was a complete punk. Lovable. But. Constant battle for dominance. Of course I always won. But he would mostly only listen to my sister! First two were mine.

@@gpt3342 That’s awesome. Biggest cats we have in my area. Are bobcats similar to links and mountain lions or pumas or Florida Panthers, Desert cats or sand cats or whatever the hell you call them. They were all a sub genus of the same species of feline.
@hawkknight4223
@hawkknight4223 Жыл бұрын
@@gpt3342 by the way. Loyalty and protection was never a question. Unless it was a box falling. Or a plastic bag in the wind! Lol. But when it mattered. Man! They always had your back. Damn fine dogs! All the way around. As long as you can raise them. Or identify the personality and adapt the approach. They will be one of the best animals you’ve ever had the honor of living with. And for the love of God I swear they chase bullets! Even if I snap off in a odd angle. Just do not treat them like a beast. Treat them like family. They are work dogs! But they are pack oriented! That is an incredibly important fact that most people I think do not understand. With many breeds but especially Rhodesian ridgebacks. They are part of the family unit. It is essential for them to do their job. You’re in or you’re out asshole! That’s the approach that they take. Some are better trained. Some are better natured. And some are actually docile. Also that is rare. They’re generally abused when that happens. If you want a docile animal. Do not get a Rhodesian Ridgeback. That is not their purpose! Nor is it hunting. It’s actually tracking. And bringing the children back that the Lions took. The dogs must be part of the family.

@Adrian yes, I would say so. Huskies are whiny and erratic, they are annoying at best.. but these Thai dogs if not exhausted become destructive and can get overly dominating, where they strictly place themselves second in the family hierarchy. Which means any other family member except the direct handler of the dog is bound to suffer. I'm talking humping, biting, not being obedient etc. I've seen it happen and it's not something anyone wants.

My mother has a friend who found an abandoned Rhodesian ridgeback by the side of the road. We think people paid for a purebred dog but underestimated how much energy they'd have, so they just dropped them off one day. No chip, tags nothing. Fortunately my mother's friend does marathons and was actually looking for a running companion for her. They even specifically looked at Ridgebacks as an option but they ruled them out cause all the dogs were way too expensive. So it was a match made in heaven for them to find that specific dog. But yeah, that ridge on their back is really cool looking and the dogs are a neat breed, but they NEED to run. Don't get them if you can't provide daily long runs or walks.

I’ve only seen this dog once on a trip to Thailand, and it was probably on a farm of my grandmas cousin

As a NYC trainer & and sitter, I can say of the thousands of dogs I've taken care of or trained. I've never once met a Thai Ridgeback. Norwegian Ridgeback is much more common. They are absolutely stunning dogs, though.

Finally a spot about ridgebacks! I love Rhodesian Ridgebacks but Thai Ridgebacks are great too. They don’t get much press for being such amazing dogs. Ty.
