This is VERY interesting. Marilyn Monroe was originally set to play Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's, the one that Audrey Hepburn played. As a matter of fact, the writer of the novel in which the movie was based on wrote the character with Monroe in mind. However, the role, to say the least, won't do good in Monroe's image according to her team, hence it was offered to Hepburn - an introvert who will play an extrovert. Not sure if that history was used by GG, 's writer as an undertone to this storyline.

I think they used this as to show Serena as the shallow blonde which was Marilyn's character in the movie. Nd then Blair shows up in Audrey Hepburn's character which was elegant nd classy,like Blair. Dan choosing elegant Blair over shallow Serena may have been the point behind it

I love this dream sequence. Serena finally accepts her materialism and glamour only to find that she loses her true love in the process to class. It’s like the muse realizing that an artist may have found something more fulfilling than his work. If only this had been Great Gatsby’s ending. But Dan gets a good ending here because Serena changes.
