Margaret Court won 11 slams during the Open Era and most of the Australian Open tournaments she played included 32 women in the draw, the majority of them being local amateurs. So her achievements come nowhere near Serena’s success and it is a downright insult that this non record is constantly mentioned.

No one even used to mention Margaret Court except as an afterthought (and ALWAYS with an asterisk) when Martina and Chris were on top with 18, and then Steffi with 22. When Serena came along, and started rising toward 18, all of a sudden they rewrote history to equate Court's 24 with the status of all the other women's Open Era championships. It's a ridiculous media thing; when she got ahead of Steffi, she became the woman with the most Grand Slam championships. As others have said, counting Court's pre-open wins is comparing apples to oranges, and a feeble attempt to diminish Serena's (and Steffi, Martina and Chris') great achievement.

Not really. Margarets record has always been mentioned as others accumulate wins. But it doesnt matter if serena wins another. Margaret has 64 total Grand Slams, serena has 39. There is no chance serena will accumulate 64 total. Also that narrative of discounting margarets wins has been debunked, margaret dominated her era more than any other athlete in any other era. Period. Full stop. Done.

Serena would be first among equals in regard to tying Court's record of 24 Singles Slams. Court had 11 Oz titles, at a time when no one could afford to travel "down under" to play the tournament. Her main rival (probably only rival) at the time, Billie Jean King, only played in Oz during that stretch of time in 1965 (semi-finals), 1968 (when she defeated Margaret in the final by the score of 6/1,6/2, and 1969, losing the championship round match to Margaret 6/4,6/1). Margaret also had a few free Roland Garros singles titles, because the US(L)TA did not allow BJK to play there until she was #1 in the world in 1967. Nancy Richey was selected to play the clay court circuit up until that time, while Billie was assigned to play on the concurrent competing grass court circuit.

She's trying her best to keep the pressure off that caused her to falter so badly in her quest for 18. By all rights, Serena should've had 4 wins in 2014 alone, bringing her to 21, but she admitted that the pressure of 18 really got to her. Once the pressure was off, she blasted off her second Serena slam in 2015. So she's trying to keep herself grounded, I think, to have the best chance of success.

Eleven of Court's majors are Australian titles. Everyone knows the vast majority of the top players at the time never played it so it's my opinion her "record" is somewhat tainted. Its no fault of hers of course but it's a big factor in the record she holds. Serena's got a much more balanced number of majors (minus the French Open of course) and competed against all the top players of her era. While Court's record is impressive - when Serena breaks the record I don't believe it'll ever be broken.

Just stop about her physic. She is more than that. There are other women players hitting the balls as hard as she does . Her having 23 soon to be 24 slams isnt the result of pure power. But the will to win it, mental toughness, focus, mobility etc. Stop undermining her greatness because she doesn't look like a breadstick with blond hair and blue eyes.
