What color do you think I should paint my walk-in closet? Leave your favorite paint color name and brand right here!

do three of the walls and the ceiling white [it's a very small space] and do the wall that you see when you walk in a color like "lipgloss" from Dulux. you should do an 'eggshell' or 'matte' finish. also, please sand and paint your trim a bright white. granted, it's a lot of work, but it'll refresh your space a ton!

I friend bought a huge old Victorian Painted Lady and snookered me into helping her "reno"... Which quite literally meant removing over a hundred years of wallpaper, and a few layers of paint in between a few of them. It took 3 weeks to do one lady's sitting/sewing room. It also took a steamer, 6 gallons of vinegar, wallpaper roller/pricker things, destruction of both my shoulders, and all my love and patience...lol She's so lucky I loved her so much.

Most apartment buildings in Copenhagen are 100 years old and you would cry if you had to reno walls here.when I removed some of my walls I found barbed wires, bamboo, newspapers, cigarette butts, coal and stuf I couldn’t identify as insulation. I did have fun reading some of the headlines on the very old newspapers so I saved some of the most whole pieces of paper.

I learned from a friend and wallpaper devotee to size walls before papering. Sizing prevents drywall from absorbing the adhesive and extends drying time so the paper can be adjusted a bit once it’s on the wall. And when my tastes changed, the paper peeled off with relative ease requiring only a scraper and warm water to remove the sizing and glue. I used Valspar’s Dogwood Petal, a white paint tinged with peachy pink tones in my bathroom, which is roughly the same size as your closet, sans window. It works with pink or gray accents and supports a little bling nicely. But really, the gray your son chose is nice. You could tone it down with white or neutral accents or rev it up with pink, yellow or coral.

I ve been decorating for over 20 years and I can honestly say I have used a steam stripper twice and that was when I was an apprentice.use .warm water and add half cup of vinegar soak the paper with sponge or brush and leave for 10 minutes or so .if need to go over it again and leave again.the vinegar reacts with the paste which makes it really easy to strip the paper and you wont get the peeling of your dry wall
@adjustedfate
@adjustedfate 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Last week I stripped 2 rooms that I know the wallpaper was well over 20 years old & coated with 19 yrs worth of 2 smokers residue. Spray bottle of 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 hot water beats steaming, or using Downy, Windex, etc. A bottle spray bottle removes the manual labor of wiping, sponging. Plus it’s a heck of a lot faster, practically instant, and no mess if you do it right. I will never use anything but vinegar again. It takes the struggle out of stripping paper.

@@adjustedfate wonder if you could put the vinegar and water mixture in the steamer?? I am having a heck of a time with removing some wallpaper in our new home.
@adjustedfate
@adjustedfate 3 жыл бұрын
@@lindseyemberton5286 you would need to make sure the mixture wouldn’t harm the steamer...idk the answer for certain but lean toward it being ok. Might even clean out your steamer in the process. Personally I would flip the mixture using mostly vinegar to water, spray the walls and then use the steamer, too. On my walls I would spray, strip using a putty knife but I have a habit of ripping it once I have it started which that tends to leave the layer of glue paper. I would then spray those areas really well and it came off very easy. Mr Clean makes a Magic Eraser mop that I used after all the wallpaper was stripped to remove any glue residue and clean the walls to be ready for Kilz Latex 2 primer. An amazing, cheap cleaner is TSP, it’s more labor intensive but will literally clean anything. I scoured the Internet prior to tackling this job & TSP was the most recommended cleaning agent to prepare walls for paint. Make sure to wear gloves! Hope this helps. :)

Wow Sabrina the timing could not be any better, Thank God. Oh if only we lived near to one another😉 I am retired (68 yrs old) and I just purchased a TLC 1984 motor home. The closet has the original wallpaper, but I am going to paint over it. I am also having to get creative cause storage is small. House is 960 sq ft. But it is time to declutter too. I like colors on the bright side. Creamy yellow quiet down vs shout out loud yellow. I also like mustard mixed with cream again the the yellow but med. Mixing cream to mustard and it is so mello but still on a bright side. I like Autumn colors but adding cream to get 1/2 way. Closets can seem dark and that is why I go lighter. Thanks oh boy you are a great teacher n give me confidence to try it. Yeah👍😘☝🙌💝 Caroline Oh PS i reside near Prescott AZ.

I realize this video is 3 y/o, but I ran across it today, for my wife and I are on our 3rd room with wallpaper. It's the kitchen. We had the wallpaper professionally installed and I am running into areas where we removed the wallpaper that it looks as though the glue ate the wallboard paper as well. I believe what I am going to have to do here is a lot of skim coating and sanding. What I have found is that whatever time you think it takes to remove wallpaper, triple the estimate, because it takes a heck of lot longer than you initially thought. Especially, if you have to work overhead and your shoulders start to tire out. Thank you for the video. I especially appreciated how you removed the sections of wood support with the saw. Set the depth and cut. Awesome tip.

I love the gray your son picked up. Easy to accent with the girly-girl colors (or not). Aside from that, I absolutely love a sage green. Again, easy to accent with other colors - either bold or girly-girl. Your closet gives me the twitches! I'm a minimalist and sort/toss clothing every season. For years, I start each season by hanging all my clothing with the hangars backwards. As I use something, if it goes back in the closet, it gets hung at the end of the line and the hangar hung frontwise. Within a couple months (or through the holidays) I can tell what I'm wearing regularly and what I haven't touched. If I haven't touched it, I don't need it. Out it goes. Life can be so simple :-)

AWESOME tutorial and right on time (for me). I have to remove some grass wallpaper in my master bedroom and redo a seriously long wall. I started this video and you had me at the "The wallpaper is coming down tomorrow" dance at 1:20 mark. I laughed so loud my cats woke up. I think the color of paint that your son chose is good, BUT... watch the beginning of this video again and check out how much stuff you had packed into this closet... not much of the color you choose will show if you don't trim back your items inside. With the install of cubby's and places that will now be seen, I would go traditional with a matt white or for a color pop a pale yellow or pale blue... (anything pale). With that said I have a suggestion for you that helped me on one of my guest rooms -- When planning your walk-in makeover take into consideration ALL the space. The rough-draft of your new wall did not include shelving over the window. Consider making an entire wall shelved in. The results will WOW you because it looks more custom AND provides you more storage space. Floor to ceiling is an easy thing to do on an entire wall and provides that custom finish that will actually increase the value of the home on resale. I can't wait to see Part 2. Thank you so much for this tutorial and the laughs. My husband and I adore you. BIGGEST HUGS and Happy Holidays to you and your family.

There is a dulux colour called frosted steel that is much lighter than the colour you chose but has a tiny hint of violet, and it's a stunning pretty but clean and fresh colour, great for a closet.

Great tutorial, and I'll look forward to the follow on video. With that great window, the closet can stand up to a bold color. I'd suggest you pick a warm yellow, coral, or perhaps an aqua, teal, or beautiful orange. I love the warm spectrum, but you should pick the color that makes you happy. You won't regret it. Go bold or go home! You look great in bold colors, so I think a bold happy color would be great to film in too. When I bought it, my entire home was boring linen white. I painted the bedroom a sunny yellow and loved it. The I had to paint the next room and the next and now it is all warm, happy colors. I also have a few accent walls in a C2 color called Persimmon. It's a vibrant red that I continue to love 10 years later. Initially I bought it from Benjamin Moore, but on the second round, I had Home Depot match it using Behr paint with primer and that was even better. The C2 paint made my head spin while painting, but I did fine with the Behr. My front and back doors are also persimmon. Everyone walks in with a smile on their face from seeing that happy color. My dining room is a terra cotta color that looks like Roman buildings at sunset. I don't recall the color name, but in the setting sun, it is breathtaking. I'll never paint anything linen for the rest of my life--not as dramatic as Scarlet O'Hara, but I'm equally committed to color. Have a great time in Brazil! Feliz Natal!

Hard work isn't it? If you wish to speed up the mudding (drying) process I recommend mixing half a bag of hot mud (90 minute) in a 5 gallon bucket for your application... To get the smoothest skim coat I recommend rolling it on and then troweling it... The mud you used, for me, is typically too thick so adding water helps but over that I just prefer to mix my own. Anywho, your finish looks really nice. Great job!

I actually don't mind the grey at all! For a small space I think it works nicely, and since it's a neutral colour it'll make the clothing and accessories in there really pop. You can always add some colourful accessories to brighten it up like window treatments, storage boxes, a cute rug, etc. You've gone through the trouble of painting the room, I say leave it like that and make it work! :)

Cool Video! I always use Roman Rx-35 to seal ripped drywall paper first. Anytime you see brown I'd recommend sealing it before the skim coat : )

As a disabled renter I don’t get to paint my walls, so I can’t suggest brands, etc. But here’s a question: What’s the color of the room the closet is in? If you like the color THAT room is painted, why not either go with a lighter shade of that (that gray looked too dark), or another room color you really like? Like the “Seagrass” you mentioned before? Just don’t go to a WARM shade if the room color is COOL and vice versa...As usual, nice work-so far-on a laborious process!

Thanks, Nan! I do like the idea of using another color on the color card (going lighter or darker from the shade in my bedroom). I think I will go in they direction since I love the color so much! Thank you!!

Jun 2022. I just saw this. You do not need a steam device to remove wallpaper and if you do it as described next you will not damage your drywall. Wallpaper has two components: the decorative printed part you see and the other layer that has the glue/adhesive that sticks to the wall. The key is to get the wallpaper saturated with water. Once it is wet, the decorative layer will come off usually very easily leaving the other glue layer. The printed decorative layer on some papers may be glossy and resistant to wetting. Others wet easily. I found that the wallpaper scoring tool does work well for the water resistant glossy finishes. Just be sure not to be too aggressive with the scoring tool and not go too deep into the sheet rock. You just need to penetrate the water resistant layer with a bunch of tiny holes so the water can get through. Find the seam like she said and wet only one or maybe two strips of paper at a time. You will want to put down a tarp to protect your floor from any excess water. You do not need to use a fire hose to wet your paper. Use one part fabric softener to 3 parts hot water and apply with a paint brush or tool (e.g. sponge) of your choice. Let sit for about 3 minutes and wet it again. Repeat a third time. Once the paper is wet enough it will peel right off. Once the top layer is off the rest is easy. Go back and wet the glue layer as before and you may want to use a 2 - 6 inch spackle tool to gently help remove the glue layer as shown on numerous other KZbin channels. If you are careful, both layers will come off without any damage to the underlying sheet rock. Once all paper is removed go back and wash your walls with a good sponge to remove any glue residue that could affect your paint. I just did this myself a couple days ago with wallpaper that was very resistant to wetting. Worked like a charm. Update: Looking again at her video I’m wondering if her wallpaper was applied to bare sheetrock that has never been painted. The wallpaper I have removed was applied to walls that have been previously painted. Regardless, if you get your paper saturated with water the top layer should remove leaving the glue layer. You would need to be extra careful ensuring the glue layer is wet enough to pull off easily and be extra careful using your spackle tool not to dig into the possibly wet sheetrock paper when removing any stubborn areas.

I moved into a house that had some gawd awful grass like wallpaper. Sprayed it with luke warm soapy water and it came right off. After sanding 100 grid sand paper and covering the bare areas where paper comes through with Gardz. Then put 20 minute easy sand cement and a 2nd coat of Gardz and voila! Note to self next time use a dust extractor...Wallpaper and popcorn ceilings are my 2 most hated items. My wife is happy and now there is peace again. Until the next project...

The previous owner of my home put wallpaper on EVERYTHING!! DIRECTLY onto the drywall! Should I score first, or just do the steamer? Thanks for the great videos! You've given me hope! Lol
@ThriftDiving

Yeah, what's up with that?! Lol The only wallpaper I would ever consider doing now would be peelable! You can skip the scoring. Steam only. Some people said in the comments that fabric softener that you can spray works well, but I think steam is the way to go. No chemicals! :)

Enjoyed your video. Glad you used respirator during sanding too. Most people don't. As far as color...Please don't go with grey which seems to be uber popular these days. How about a lavender accent wall at the back of the closet with complementary creamy color everywhere else. You've probably already chosen a color though. Thanks again.
