COMPOSITION: I compose my music for the most part at the piano. Occasionally though, when I’m in the right frame of mind, I will compose directly onto staff paper away from the piano or any other instrument. However, my preferred method is composing at the piano to capture good melodic ideas and harmony at the same time.
RECORDING (EWI): I record, mix, and master all of my projects through Logic Pro X. While I’m recording though, particularly woodwinds, brass, some pitched percussion, and strings, I play the sound samples through an EWI (electronic wind instrument) as opposed to using a standard MIDI keyboard. The EWI results in a very expressive, realistic, and natural-sounding performance for each instrument. The only rare exceptions for my using a MIDI keyboard are when I want to record harp, piano, and some percussion.
SOUND SAMPLES: Most of the time I only use two sample libraries: GPO5 (Garritan Personal Orchestra 5) and SampleModeling Strings. Many other sample libraries just don’t respond well to breath controllers like the EWI (or CC11). Believe me, I have a bunch of other samples ready to go, but because I don’t record with a keyboard, I rarely, if ever, use them (Spitfire libraries, Kontakt libraries, etc.). Both GPO5 and SMS respond extremely well to the EWI and with my expressive performances, some sample layering, and good mixing and mastering, I always get final tracks I’m happy with.
A little about me -
I'm originally a clarinet performance major who transitioned to music composition. Over the years, I've worked with several fantastic harmony, theory, and composition teachers. Besides the clarinet, I also play the piano and the EWI (an Electronic Wind Instrument made by Akai, which I often record my music with). I currently live in Orange County, California, about an hour's drive south of Los Angeles. 📝
The power of orchestral music-
It's well known that beautiful music can be very relaxing, but not all is relaxing. In particular, orchestral music can stimulate positive moods, calm, and feelings of excitement and joy. Whether you enjoy music for orchestra or chamber music groups, studies have shown that this is the best music to alleviate anxiety, the best music for happiness, as well as music to occasionally help you fall asleep better, or even fall asleep faster- depending on the music. Surveys indicate that many people listen to classical orchestral music for relaxation mostly, but it serves so many other benefits and can be very entertaining sonically, especially if the composition, orchestration, or performances are exceptional. I've always loved music for large orchestras most of all. However, choral music with orchestra, or rather, orchestra and choral music as well as film scores, movie music, or music for film are easily my second favorite when it comes to my music listening. Beautiful classical music or even contemporary music is above all, music good for mental health and a positive heart.
