His name is pronounced a little like 'Sairge Gahnsbor' (or suhj ganz-buor) - the English-speaking world has tended to mispronounce his name as 'Surge Gains-borg'. Anyway, the 'g' is dropped. The man was a genius. For a deep dive, try his movie scores - amazing. He could write anything - bubblegum pop, proto-psychedelia, jazz, and all kinds of boundary-busting weirdness. He was also very famous for his dextrous wordplay. This track is a case in point. He knew he'd shock British journalists with the title, because it translates (sometimes) as 'Requiem for a C**t'. The thing is, that's not how the French would hear or read it, as that's a version of the word that's been out of use for 100s of years. To the French, it means 'idiot', but it's perhaps a stronger insult than when Brits or Americans use the word 'idiot'. As someone else says here, an American English translation would be 'Requiem for a Dumbass'. For Brits, 'con' is the equivalent of something like 'twat'. 🙂

Check out his whole "Histoires de Melody Nelson" album. Haunting, in a good way. And his reggae songs (where he covered "La Marseillaise", the French anthem), can't go wrong with these ones. Serge Gainsbourg adopted this artist name (originally Lucien Ginzburg) because he was originally pursuing a painter career, and he was very appreciative of the English painter Thomas Gainsborough.
