Of course you would want to deflect that to the corner with your stick, but the reason that becomes difficult is probably because he is not anticipating a slapper from that far out on a 3 on 2. What I think he should do differently however, is not position himself that far out when the shooter himself yet is not a massive threat. Gives you both better reaction time on the shot (back to the obvious stick save selection), and also a shorter route into the pucklane on the rebound/pass. If you regardlessly want to play that for out on the zone entry, I find it really important to have a little backwards momentum (ref WINnington), which makes the rotation before the push for the rebound a lot easier.

Bob prioritized the shooter on that 3 on 2 and took the angle away from the shooter. Bad luck to kick it out right onto the forward's blade for a rebound one-timer.
