He was never wasted on the Wings. When he held out for contract he was my favorite player and I was so pissed. Realized the mans potential other than offense...unreal player!!!

Ever wonder why his number isn't hanging in the rafters? His antics of being all about himself his holdout signing with Carolina to drive up his salary. Pete Karmanos and the Illitch's despised each other. Carolina deliberately signed him to inflate his salary and stick it to Mr. I. After he left Detroit his numbers dropped like a rock.

As great an offensive player as he was, Federov was twice as good on the defensive side and was always lined up against the opponent's best center. Before Datsyuk, Bergeron and others, there was Sergei Federov. He was worth every single penny he was paid on those Red Wings teams because there wasn't anything he couldn't do. Mind you, Federov ALSO played defenseman at times due to injuries on the team and he was great at that too. Amazing talent

This guy was ahead of his time, one of VERY few 90s players whose game would seamlessly translate to today's style of hockey. Top 2 favorite Red Wing of all time

You never saw guys like Stasny LaFleur or Perrault did you? Federov couldn't carry Joe Sakic's jockstrap

@@ericw3229 lol you’re just a hater I see, Fedorov at his peak was far more skilled than Sakic. Open your mind a bit pal

Rookies that season were STACKED check out, 0:48 seconds in, scoring and how many of them have sweaters hanging in rafters... 4 of 5 on that list.

Why were the Soviets so dominant? People forget Federov, Bure, and Mogilny were on the same line before coming to the NHL. That's a lot of talent.
@c.a.porter Жыл бұрын
And both bure and fedorov said that mogilny was the best player. Just goes to show how important coaching is once you get to the NHL.

After his holdout in 98 then signing the offer sheet with Carolina simply to inflate his salary they never will. The animus between Karmanos and Illitch goes back to the early 1980's when Compuware and Little Caesars were fierce rivals in minor hockey.
