All Sergei really needs is 1-2 wins for him to be right back into title contention. HW lacks the depth of other divisions and he's already separated himself from most of his opponents.

It only takes zero to one win. He is already an elite fighter that got caught by a miraculous punch by aspinal. Both aspinal and serg could fight for years at hw and it would still be a great division, once this jones stipe thing is sorted out.

I think the reason Dana wants to keep the Jones Stipe fight and not strip Jones of the title is because he wants to keep Jones happy. He doesn't want a scenario where he does (what would be the right thing in my eyes) and strip Jones of the title and give it to Aspinal, or have Aspinal defeat Stipe and force Jones to have to fight someone who's a far bigger threat to Jones than Stipe. If Dana did either of these things, Jones might decide to leave the UFC and fight Francis in the PFL which would be a massive promotional victory for the PFL over the UFC. Dana wants to avoid this at all costs, even if it means the top contenders like Sergei, Cyril and Tom as well as all the fans have to suffer for it. Dana's not a billionaire CEO for nothing, he's able to see the potential danger ahead from the PFL as a rival if they were able to snatch Jones and put on the biggest Heavyweight fight in MMA history. This is the only rational reason the UFC could be doing this. But it might backfire if Aspinal gets frustrated at having to wait on the sidelines through no fault of his own, and decides to. ditch the UFC for a fight with Francis himself. These are the dynamics beneath the surface in the Heavyweight division at the moment I feel. I could be wrong, but that's the only way I can make sense of it.

There are 700 fighters in the UFC. 400 fighters fought this year. 80 fighters headline a card this year. Only one fighter was able to get 1 million ppv buys. That fighter name is Jon Jones. Dana can't lose Jones. He can dump a belt and demand for Dana to release him, he can fail a test or get a fight card cancel by not fighting but the UFC will still keep him. Tom aspinall has done nothing to be treasured by the UFC. If Dana can let Francis go, he can let Aspinall go. Tom is not special. He just knocked out a guy who Jon and Stipe agreed to fight as a back up fighter. If Tom wants to leave, he can leave. Dana won't stop him.

That fight with aspinall could have gone either way. Who ever landed clean first. Aspinall more well rounded but when they are throwing bombs it could have easily ended the other way around.

That whole card was a treat. Finish after finish. Fan of all fighters in the main / co-main, and so it did not matter who won as long as the fights were good, and they were. I don't think anyone's stock went down.

I dont really care. There has been 1 heavyweight title fight soice Jan 2022. It will be just under 1 year if all goes right for the next one. Jon should be stripped at max 1 year. Its too bad he didnt accept a fight while he was healthy. The heavyweight division is the worst at not allowing contenders to even get a shot. Rematch after rematch, retirements, injuries. Lets get some people some title shots and not age everyone into their 40s before they happen.

Peoples lives are wasting away waitng 3 years between fights. The rematches, Its just a horrible division. Whats wrong with Tom being champ and defending and if Jones gets well then he gets a shot. Or whoever wins between Jones and Stipe. Go back and see how many people have even had a shot for the last 5 or 6 years. Its a crap division

Great points by the thread starter. Ufc needs to be more like pride fc. At minimum 3-4 fights per year. If it's 3 then it's 4 months between fights for title holders. No one wants to wait as long as it is now

He's clearly a good boxer but he is garbage on the mat and the funny thing is that a much smaller but vastly improved Ryan Bader could probably submit him if it went their. The only fight that makes sense for Sergei is Cyril Gane. If Sergei fights Cyril then Tom can only fight Curtis Blaydes because Tom won't get to fight Jon Jones. Stipe is really holding up the heavyweight division.

Re run Aspinall / Blaydes it,s the only fight in the UFC where Tom has as a loss which should have been a no contest due to the few seconds into round 1 following a kick from Aspinall ( for them who didnt see the " fight " ) causing the untreated injury to his knee to resurface.

There is also someones look and backstory. Believe it or not someone's look can help sell a fight, usually a small point. The backstory without personality even coming into play can sell people, Islam being Khabib's succesor essentially. Someone rematching a champion whom they previously beat. Someone simply being from a certain country.
