A wonderful subdued version of this piece. I think it is faithful to the spirit of Rachmaninoff's music. It is intelligent rather than emotional, and completely in sync with the line of non-sentimental Russian composers such as Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov or Prokofiev. It is complex, clever and playful. The orchestra enacts this spirit with restrained elegance and vigor. I think it's awesome.

@@romanreshetkin Yes, I also think that it is strange to call Prokofiev or Rimsky-Korsakov "non-sentimental" composers, and what about Rachmaninoff himself? I would think it over twice before calling him "non-sentimental." I think that if there is a sentimental Russian composer, that is Rachmaninoff…

@@Kobzar3374 Agreed. A master of very emotional melodies in all of his works, from Prelude in C sharp minor 3 #2 to this magnificent finale of his career. Rachmaninoff is the soul of Russian romanticism and is IMO Russia's greatest composer, greater even than Tchaikovsky.

hey, to those saying it's too slow - blame the composer. first movement is marked "non allegro."
@AndreyRubtsovRU5 жыл бұрын
stop playing this sensless game. words don't mean a thing. if people say it's too slow - they are right. i am not saying i agree, i like the tempo. but words on a page are meaningless. to add to that many think that 'non allegro' should be treated here in a literal Italian meaning - not scherzo-like, not optimistic.

Temirkanov is very good...that is, until the finale, which totally peters out of energy. Sorry, Yuri, but it's waaaay too slow! I've heard multiple version's of this live and on record, including the Philadelphia Orchestra's fabulous recorded late '50s performance on LP under Ormandy, to whom the work is dedicated. I still have it on CD.

This is amazingly, beautifully contrasted, Musical Phrasing. Do you honestly think Rachmaninov was that interested in composing only "Super Charged Tempii" Orchestrations for the gratification of "Tempii Challenged/overinflated Musical Ego Conductor". Rachmaninov has very little say in what Orchestal Conductors & Soloists choose to interpret the markings on his Compositions. Rach. really doesn't need all the Musically Misguided interpetations........... That's what makes his Musical Insight lasting & unique . I blame the Musical insensitivity of the Conductors

That's a pretty silly attitude to take about completely subjective likes or dislikes when we're talking about Musical Appreciation. Tone poems work a bit better when you build them like you're exploring the different musical "colors" of the Symphonic landscape ! It makes the "Forte" passages more Impactactful when we get to them. That's kind of a ridiculous comment. You mean they're performed dead. Actually Rachmaninoff is one of the ten most-frequently programmed composers by orchestras, and yes performed live in concert. And Temirkanov is very good, until the finale, which totally peters out. Way too slow!

I’m not generally averse to slow tempi in most works, however IMO Rachmaninov is a composer who really needs momentum with his compositions, accordingly slow tempi simply don’t work for me. This is particularly acute in the symphonies, far too many conductors over sentimentalise the music with drawn out phrasing . When you hear a more dynamic performance it’s a revelation and highlights the composer’s greatness.
