Underrated composer? He's actually one of the most popular composers I can think of. Do you know how many recordings there are of the 2nd and 3rd piano concertos or the piano music or the second symphony?

Rach was only underrated in his own time, in America, because modernist composers as Schoenberg and Hindemith were challenging tonal music. Critics took to modernism and criticized Rach for being too "gushy" but that changed as audiences loved Rach's music. How often do we hear Schoenberg in symphonies now vs Rach's music? Even his choral music is very popular, the All Night Vigil performed frequently.

The soloist's vibrato in the first movement annoys me a bit... Seems a bit too much and make it difficult to hear the melody. Apart from that, this is absolutely stunning, both the music and the performance! Thank you so very much!

I love my Rachmaninoff and know so many pieces especially piano music, but this composition tops them all. No wonder it was his own favourite! I'd be surprised if Orff didn't nick some of Rach's ideas for his Carmina Burana 🙂

Your comment about Orff is spot on: the powerful unison passage at 77 (third movement) seems to anticipate 'O Fortuna' by more than twenty years.

Nah, Disney music is just ripped-up Rachmaninoff. Genuinely. When I just started listening to SV’s music I was surprised at the sheer amount of similarities between ALL the musical textures of Disney movies and say, the 2nd Symphony (although this isn’t the starkest example: this here opening of ‘the Bells’ is really notable too).

Tien Trien Nguyen No, it isn’t such a big deal when we think of Disney music as aimed at creating distinct sonic textures to suit whatever is on screen, as opposed to distinctive melodic or thematic material that may even be unique. Any movie we watch made by Hollywood or Disney that has orchestral soundtracks contains these Rachmaninoffesque textures.
