Why use a serger for quilting? Sara Gallegos shows you exactly why! The serger has multiple stitches that creating stunning decorative effects. The flatlock stitch creates a fun, ladder-like look along the seam when sewn right sides together, and an elegant dimensional effect when sewn wrong sides together. And if you’re interested in dimensional effects, the wave stitch creates a lovely, two-color ruffled wave. Explore thread weights and styles, and learn how or make those serger stitches work for you!
Notions used: Clover Fabric Folding Pen, Madeira Decora rayon thread (12 weight). Fabrics from Paintbrush Studio Fabrics Kick Off Your Boots collection.

This is very useful information …..HOWEVER, how does the project behave on a long arm machine for the quilting?

DO NOT CUT THOSE FLATLOCK THREAD TAILS! Your project will fall apart in the laundry!! On flatlock seams, leave a long tail, fold it back underneath, so it does not get cut off, then use a large eye needle, or similar tool, to tuck the tail under the loops. An inch of thread chain tail, tucked into your seam, should be enough to prevent your beautiful flatlocking from coming apart at the intersection of seams! Marta, on Palmer and Pletsch teaches this method, after having intersecting flatlock seams come apart, due to trimming the thread tails when flatlocking. Great video, thank you for sharing!

Thank you for a great video! I quilt and I have an Ovation but I have only begun learning how to use it. It’s a bit intimidating! Can you tell me what you do on the corners when you snip the tails? Are you using the liquid glue (I have it and can’t remember the name), or is it secure when washed? I make rag quilts, so exposed edges and wrong-sides-together are natural to me... I’ve made rolled hemmed napkins and wasn’t sure how to do those corners because I stop/start on each side. Advice?

Sometimes my spool nets ride up and come off the spool. Is there a trick for preventing this from happening?

I cut my thread nets in half and insert one end into the bottom hole of the spool, then bring the other end of the net up around the spool from below. This keeps the thread from falling off the spool and the net stays on. Hope this helps.

I was given some Designer 6 threads, can I use them in my Janome overlocker as that decorative top wave?

wow! love the decorative effects, I am a little confused on the wave stitch, is it a flatlock stitch just with a shorter stitch length and upper and lower loopers only?

Is there a better serger out there that a beginner should purchase or just get whatever you think is great and that you will grow into? There are just so many different brands, but what makes one better than the other?

Thanks for touching on the wave stick as well; I’m trying to learn how to use it. Have you found sometimes the overlooked stick goes past the edge of the fabric? I’ve had an issue with that when overlocking. I did what Babylock told me to, to no avail. Suggestions? Thanks again and I’m subscribing. You’re a great teacher. ☺️

I used to subscribe to this channel and for a reasonable fee, I had access to high quality videos. Unfortunately, some time ago, the number of videos you had access to became limited and the other were far too expensive and I could no longer connect to my account and watch these videos. so, unless things get back to the way they were which were user friendly and reasonable, I will not advertise for that channel and resubscribe, much to my regret but rightly so from an ethical point of view.
