What a fabulous voice and his Italian is absolutely PERFECT; I can understand his every word as I can when he sings in French (I teach Romance Languages). He is such a great singer all-round: Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Gounod and more...... and his bel canto roles are simply outstanding. My first exposure to Sergey was as Il Duca di Mantua, 'Rigoleto' in a bit of a shocking role as he had a total nude scene at an appropriate moment in the opera.... But what struck me was that his DUCA was literally perfect and not just in "La Donna e' Mobile', the best Duca I've heard since I started my opera hourney a decade ago at nineteen. Bravo. I'd love to see the following tenor duet. This guy really likes to perform while sitting or laying down. A lot.

I think this comes from the directors. They saw that he can do it and did it in other productions without protesting, so they ask him to. I remember his Rigoletto, where in Parmi veder le lacrime he sings while going down some very steep stairs, then goes on to sing while stripping, including removing his shoes and socks thus balancing on one foot and leaning down. To be fair, in this scene, he starts by saying how tired is his body and that his eyes are closing and giving in to sleep. Therefore it's not a director's gimmick, it's quite suitable.
