great performance full of clarity. Not many concert-level pianists devote themselves to Beethoven's bagatelles, and that's a shame.

Absolutely superb playing. Beautifully phrased in the lyrical bagatelles, and perfect control in the wild witty ones. I found you when I ran across your Scriabin left hand Nocturne, which you balanced and sang out better than I have heard anyone do. Bravo. I'll be looking out for you.

Not just you! Along with the Op. 127 quartet and the Eroica symphony, it was these pieces that caused me to fall in love with Beethoven. This is a wonderful performance, the equal of Stephen Kovacevich's (the one that won me over all those years ago), and with the added bonus of being able to watch the delightful way the pianist moves! So good it made me weep.

Bagatelles are simple and therapeutic. Learned a lot from hearing it. I didn't know V was supposed to be that fast! I'm playing them this month at home in honor of the 250th anniversary. It is not often I see the actual microphones used for recording. BTW, the walls need painting. How can you get scuff marks 8 feet high? Does the hall serve as a gym at the conservatory?
@sergeypiano
@sergeypiano 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No. 5 can be within a fairly wide tempo framework. My recording is around its upper limit, so it's certainly not a must to follow at all costs. By the concert time, the hall had been in need of a repair for some ten years perhaps. It has been thoroughly repaired since, though.

In the F major allegretto Beethoven goes from F major to D Major with no warning. This is a chromatic mediant relationship. There is one common tone A. But in the D major portion, Beethoven does not use a B F or C so there are no accidentals in score. In the first statement of the theme, A was used as the third. But in the D portion there is no F#.
@howardchasnoff208
@howardchasnoff208 2 жыл бұрын
My mistake. In the D Major portion there is an F# in the left hand. It is a CCR3 chromatic cross relation of a 3rd.

@sergeypiano
@sergeypiano 9 жыл бұрын
+Tristan Jans Thank you! Indeed, the hall had been long wanting a retouch and now it is being deeply renovated, to be opened next year. As for the bench, try to ask at your local piano dealers, these often come bundled with the pianos so at least the shops should know where to get them.

@annachen5688 8 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see. You took the bridge from the part that repeats and stuck it in the beginning. Very nice job coming back from it. Can you give me some advice about how to cleanly play the notes from measures 19-21? I keep ending up slurring them all into one big heap. Thanks.
@sergeypiano
@sergeypiano 8 жыл бұрын
+Anna Chen It's difficult to guess off-sight, but most probably you are trying to detach these notes by raising your hand not palm which is impossible at this speed. If I'm correct, your fingers have to spring off from the keys individually, that is, without making the palm move up. That is, fingers should be the energy carriers, not just protrusions of the palm.
@annachen5688
@annachen5688 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. That helps a lot. I am amazed at how you were able to figure out what I was doing wrong without watching. That's true musicianship right there, not only knowing what to do but also what _not_ to do.
@sergeypiano
@sergeypiano 8 жыл бұрын
+Anna Chen You are welcome! it's probably also a certain teaching experience. ;) And in my previous answer there's an automiscorrection: "our palm" should read ", not palm" of course. :)

The tempo on no. 7 is out if this world. I don't understand how you can play the left hand part 13 measures from the end at that tempo. Those 3 measures are holding back my tempo for the whole piece.
@sergeypiano
@sergeypiano 9 жыл бұрын
Luke Ellison :) Thank you very much! It's generally senseless to explain playing music off-sight, but here it may help you to use one palm movement that corresponds to the slur, that is not six finger movements but one palm movement. There will still be finger movements but united by the more general one.
@hitm43
@hitm43 9 жыл бұрын
Sergey Kuznetsov Thanks for the response! That does make sense to think of it as one palm movement instead of each individual note, I guess I haven't really thought about it that way. Hopefully it helps. Its just very hard for me to play even and accurately with my weak fingers (4 and 5) and there is no way around it with this passage.

I listened only to the first of these Bagatelles in E Flat Major, which has a special meaning for me, as I studied it in my childhood. I find this to be excessively over-interpreted, too many fluctuations of tempo and dynamics, and in some spots trivialized. There is too much affectatjon in it for my taste. Elsewhere on KZbin, there is a rendition by a young girl in her early teens which is far more honest in my opinion, and which I vastly prefer to this. The channel it is on is "Steve Mitchel" and the girl's name (not given) is Olivia Mitchel. No desire on my part to necessarily push her into prominence, but her rendition comes remarkably close to how I hear the piece and accordingly prefer it.

I well understand how special a piece studied in childhood can be to us. However, I must note that it's been prudent of you to stop listening after the first bagatelle as nothing more joyous awaited you there. :-) Because, I suspect, we diverge on many points here, including what overinterpretation as well as underinterpretation is. 8-)

The walls could do with a lick of paint...😣 It spoils the effect... Don't like the piano stool either--it is more suited to an electric keyboard than a Steinway...!!😊 There's an old saying:"It's a shame to spoil the ship for a ha'peth of tar!"☺

Andrew Kennaugh The walls have fortunately received all kinds of paint recently, after a thorough renovation. :-) The bench, indeed, isn't a benchmark in subtlety, however I find this construction the best as it never produces noises, is never shaky and allows very quick adjustment. Enough to bear less than perfect outlook.

You 7 Bagatelles played without any warmth, charm, just icy cold, sometimes showy. You don't love this music and don't understand it. Move on to pieces of your style or learn listen to Arthur Shnabel.

@@sergeypiano I like your classy response. Let her record these bagatelles and present them on you tube and see if she can play them any better. I'm sure that Brendel would praise your performance.
