I've been playing for 35 jeers and never witnessed anything quite like this. What it must do for the brain of a human to memorize and replicate such complexity. Beautiful and entertaining this performance is.

It's probably the guitar they can't put their finger on why. I can hear it. Unfortunately, I've lost a fortune traversing the dangerous landscape of classical guitars and more times than not, the guitar has slight intonation disparities that affect the harmonization and what people when listening might refer to as the musicality. Unfortunately, the world has been swept up in mediocrity. The classical guitar is supposed to be a precision instrument. I have had quote inquote top makers tell me that every guitar has some level of intonation loss. This is simply not true. However, depending on the reason, it cannot always be adjusted correctly within the 12 frets. The smaller the disparity, one might wonder why it just doesn't ring out or it sounds a little lacking.

This is probably one of the best performances ever recorded live on classical guitar. And then also count that he plays the most interesting music ever written on the instrument. Harmonies, chord changes, voicings, Rhythmic ideas, swing and melody lines, its simply outstanding. And the recording is clean, not much reverb, simply a good sounding instrument thanks to Roman. Sergio Assad is just awesome.

Birger Westin The Valseano part of this piece is just magical and its where the piece comes together.
if anybody doesnt know. this kinda playing takes a life of work. assads suite isnt for everybody i know. very discordant at times but he worked on this for years im sure

I can't understand some of the comments below saying his playing is "not expressive" or that this piece has "too many notes". I quite like his playing and the composition. I tend to think of the piece as a watercolor painting, with various shapes and forms coming into and out of view as the painter works.
@nanthilrodriguez8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Blais Did you read that watercolor bit from a review of the piece else where? Aquarelle is a style of watercolor painting, and it's the kind of painting sergio assad's wife would do, so yes it should remind you of a watercolor...
@sajateacher8 жыл бұрын
Actually, just going from the French for "watercolor". But hearing the piece I was visualizing various images coming into and out of focus.

Well I wouldn't put those guys all in exactly the same category, but hey they are all Brazilian. I just listened to a Gismonti recording and he reminded me of Baden Powell, Yamandu Costa & Raphael Rabello. The Assads kind of have one foot in the classical world and one foot in their latin roots, it's hard to think of comparable musicians. But check out Ricardo Cobo's Latin American Guitar CD, and Jason Vieaux's Guitar Recital CD for similar music, and amazing guitar chops.
