Seriation- Archaeological Dating Techniques

In the next instalment of the Archaeology 101 set of videos, I tell you the exciting story of Sir William Flinders Petrie and his invention of Seriation!! Seriation is complicated and involves a lot of guess work, but it's really fun to look at the evolution of styles. Again, not an exact form of dating. Seriation is relative. @@DigItWithRaven I'm actually watching your videos right now :) I like the jello XD It's an exam about typography, so I'm just happy that I'm find stuff that explains it a bit easier than reading old Danish and Swedish texts from the 19th century and some more modern English texts that are like pulling teeth to read, so right now, I'm just happy I found something that makes sense, and can explain it in a funny way, thank you :)

The garbage pit! William Rathje, University of Arizona, started methodically excavating modern landfills back in the 1980's and created the new discipline of Garbology. You can read up on it in Wikipedia. I took a class from him back in late 80's and found it fascinating. Nice work on your videos, Raven.

Currently prepping for the eot exam to an introductory course to my minor in prehistoric and ancient archaeology... Seriation is a bit mind boggling especially since I don’t like that it relies on something as subjective as defining the types (unless it’s, say, roughly dating based on diagnostic artefacts like gravettes from the Gravettien, copper tools from the chalcolithic, or ingot torcs from the early Bronze Age (BzAx)...) But it works, and besides: correspondence analysis is kinda fun. Unless the matrix gets too unwieldy...(but I guess I am a bit damaged from my minor before archaeology, which was computer science...thought I’d at least give my other interest a try until I hit my inevitable maths wall).

Ugh. Seriation though...not really that fun to me. We had to do it in an archaeological theory class and it was so frustrating.

Also, since you talked about typologies and characteristics, that’s where paradigms come into play. Something else that I absolutely hate doing. Reason 1 why I love being a bioarchaeologist.
